Ham WiFi Group...
by Rod Fritz 15 Oct '09

15 Oct '09

Hi Everyone, The ATVSIG Group has proposed a project with the initial working name, "Ham WiFi". The purpose of the project is to "establish reliable high-speed digital radio communication between two or more amateur radio stations". A possible long-term goal may be to establish what is known as a "mesh network". We already have a startup workgroup, but wonder who else might be interested. Let me know if you want to "participate" or "monitor" the project. Participants will assess needs, establish objectives and build a prototype system. Monitors will provide input to the project group and monitor the group's progress. Please pass this information on to others in SBARC who may want to be part of the group. Anyone interested can email me at rod(a)sbatv.org Thank you, Rod Fritz, WB9KMO SBARC ATVSIG Chair

300.125 MHz
by michael＠reynoldsoffice.com 13 Oct '09

I sometimes scan various bands on my Kenwood F6A, to discover what's on the air, and came across 300.125 MHz, or very near that. I found voice transmissions going on during the late evening. It could be occurring during other times, but it seems consistent between 10pm and Midnight. There are Spanish speaking men and woman have very brief transmissions with other. I do not understand enough Spanish to know what they are saying. What seems unusual, to me, is the type of transmission, and the fact that there is no record in the FCC ULS of any assignments on or near that frequency. The ULS only has two listings nationwide between 300 and 301 MHz, and they are both inactive licenses. According to the frequency spectrum allocations, this frequency is allocated for mobile, mobile satellite, or fixed; and it is government exclusive. The transmissions, as I mentioned, are brief, and there are, at least, 4 or 5 people. Each transmission ends with a quick burst of three DTMF-like tones, which, together, last only about half a second. The people seem to be coordinating something. It seems more like information being passed, rather than casual talk. Another thing about the transmissions is that they are sometimes distorted, as if the mode cannot be distinquished by the radio. Sometimes they come in well using FM, and other times they can be heard well using AM. The signal appears to zero beat on 300.125 MHz. I have wondered whether I am picking up a harmonic frequency. I have tried various multiples or fractions of the frequency, and have not found it elsewhere. The signal at my house, near Patterson and Hollister, is very strong. In fact, if I use the radio's attentuator, the signal is still full scale. Has anyone else come across this? Would someone else try listening, to see whether they receive it, or understand it? ---Michael, NO6O

KI6HPO/S.B.A.R.C. Makes The ARRL Propagation Report.
by Alain Michel 10 Oct '09

10 Oct '09

Hi All, In the event that you do not subscribe to Paul Cook's [K7RA] weekly propagation newsletter, you really might give it a go. It is most informative and it is especially educational to a new ham like me. Anyway, I wrote to Paul mentioning my summer and early fall experiences with the S.B.A.R.C. repeaters and he included it in this weeks bulletin. In case you haven't read it, here it is for your reading. 73, Alan Alan Vigeant, KI6HPO of San Marcos, California wrote, "I'd like to inform you of past and most recent conditions here in NE San Diego County. Since early April, I've been having daily chats with my good friends at the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club, which is situated about 165 miles NW of my QTH." Alan continues, "I am at 2,200 feet of altitude, on the SW rim of what I like to call the Palomar Ridge, which is about 5,600 feet above sea level. Between the two rims is what I call the 'Palomar Trench.' My QTH is about 12 miles SW of the Palomar Observatory. Using William Hepburn's 'Worldwide Tropospheric Ducting Forecasts web site (see http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html), which has proven most helpful to me, I can pretty much set my watch as to when the duct will be forming. My QTH is about 40 miles east of Oceanside, California. My signal follows the ducting which occurs in the trench and then goes up the coast of Southern California to Santa Cruz Island, where their 220 MHz repeater is." He goes on to say. "The past week proved to be a most curious one for me. While I was speaking to the 7:00 AM SBARC Morning Net, I noticed that the S-meter on my 220 rig (I utilize the club's 223.920 repeater) began to fluctuate rapidly." He ends with, "Looking out my garage side door, I could watch the cloud cover come in from the Pacific; as I looked on, I could actually see that as the cloud cover rose, the meter would decline to an S-3. As the Sun grew higher in the sky and the cloud bank began to recede into the Pacific, the meter would register an S-9 to almost 40 over. At times, during the summer evenings, I could look out along the Palomar trench and look to the horizon to see if prop was going to be good or not so good for the evening." Thanks, Alan! Very interesting report.

From: w7ppx(a)jrcda.com To: elfarocommunications(a)hotmail.com CC: w7ppx(a)jrcda.com Subject: RE: tower and Ant. Date: Thu, 24 Sep 2009 18:10:29 -0700* *David*** * * *Due to my illness and age 76, I can no longer transport to Idaho **from Santa Maria California, my antennas and crank up the tower**. They are in * *Santa Maria, California**, **Valley van & storage**. The following is what I have, storage. A 60 foot crank up Tower in perfect condition, free standing heavy-duty, in perfect condition. A Hygainif TH DX seven elements beam for 10/15/20 Meter TRI BANDER. A Cush craft three elements beam for 12 and 17 m. I also have higher frequency antennas. I have all the manuals for the this package. I am told, the **value would be 2500 plus**, but because I had two operations. I can no longer keep my equipment in storage. because my Social Security has been eaten up by my medical bill. I can no longer pay my $25 a month for storage fees. I owe them $175 back payments. So I'm going to let everything go for **$950.oo**. **They have a forklift. So they can put it on a truck. The Crank up **TOWER** collapses to 24 feet, three sections. If you are interested, let me know. There is a person in Santa Maria, who would help you load it up. Bill Lakes Ameritron AL-80B Amplifier
by WB6WCW＠aol.com 17 Sep '09

17 Sep '09

Hi Gang: Nobody even looked at this amplifier at the Earl Warren Swapmeet, but I thought I would offer it one more time before the swapmeet in Chino Hills this Saturday (9/19/09). This amplifier is brand new, never been used, until I installed the 3-500Z tube in it to insure that everything worked OK. This is a 160-10 meter linear amplifier, and Ameritron says it puts out 1,000 watts output (PEP), or 800 watts output on CW. Offered for the next 2 days at $750, cash and carry.........Saturday it's back up to $900 at the swapmeet. Tnx & 73's Bill W6FF 968-4227

"Ham Operating" Overseas?
by Alain Michel 17 Sep '09

17 Sep '09

Hello All, My wife and I are planning a vacation to New Zealand & Australia sometime early next year for several weeks. I won't be taking my 775DSP with me[!], but I would like to take my h/t along, just for the experience. I have never done this before; if you have, either on a vacation or through a DXpedition, I'd very much like to hear from you! I made a DX contact on 15 meters, back in March of 2008 to New Zealand, ZM4A. I would very much like to see their contest station and will contact them before I go! Any suggestions on what I should do...and not do to prepare for this? If I do work any HF, it'll probably be from someone's QTH. All thoughts and recommendations will be most gratefully received. Many thanks for taking the time to respond! 73, Alan...KI6HPO

Location of 223.920 MHz, 127.3 PL repeater?
by Alain Michel 14 Sep '09

14 Sep '09

Hello All, During our Wednesday and Thursday evening nets, I have just recently been hearing QSO's "behind" our own on 223.920 MHz. I am totally reliant on tropo ducting in order to access the Santa Cruz Island repeater during nets from May through September. I've been working 220 MHz since May, so I have no idea what to anticipate this winter! From my QTH, I can hit the 224.420 MHz, 156.7 Bakersfield repeater when the tropo is in! Bakersfield is almost 200 miles NNE from me. As it is, Santa Cruz Island is about 165 miles NW. This last Thursday on the "Technical Elmering Net", I distinctly heard the automated repeater I.D. note that the PL was "...127.3". With our "talk-over", I was unable to get the callsign of said repeater. I've gone through my 2008-2009 ARRL Repeater Book, as well as searching the states of Arizona, Nevada & Idaho for a 223.920 AND 127.3 PL without joy. I have also gone through the "Google" search with the repeater freq and the PL without success. I have gone through my normal "220 MHz Spectrum Management Association" list, as well as the W6JPL 220 list and have not found a 223.920 with a 127.3 PL! Does anyone have a more comprehensive list of 220 repeaters from which to draw info? Does anyone in the S.B. area hear this repeater also? Can anyone identify it? Wait! A thought just occured to me... Since the 220 repeaters are linked by the 146.790 MHz frequency, could it be another 2 meter repeater I am hearing "through" 146.790 MHz? Many thanks for taking the time to respond! Alan...KI6HPO...San Diego
