New Elmer Net Thrusdays at 7:30 PM

Hi folks: Please see the note from N6DRF below: _____ From: Don Flint [mailto:don@n6drf.com] Sent: Sunday, November 09, 2008 4:51 PM To: n6kth(a)n6kth.com Hello everyone, As most of you know, there is a net every weekday morning called the Reg Dawe Memorial Cuckoo net in which we all meet and rag chew, talk about weather conditions and anything else that may come up. This net is not exclusive and everyone is welcomed. As an extension to that, Ken Owen (N6KTH) and Dave Milton (K6HWN) have created the Reg Dawe Amateur Radio Association. The mission statement for the association is that we are a group of hams dedicated to serving as "elmers" to the amateur radio community, by guiding, assisting and supporting fellow hams, following the example set by Reg Dawe W6HUT (sk). A website has been established after securing Reg's call sign and can be found at http://www.w6hut.net if you care to peruse it. As time went on, I felt that there was a little bit of a void, not only in the morning net, but with the SBARC net schedule generally. In thinking of ways to fill this void, it seemed like it might be a good idea to have an informal net, more of a "gathering", on Thursday evenings that would be geared towards the new ham licensee that may have a lot of "newbie" questions, questions about repeaters, how to use their radio, what IRLP does, where exactly La Vagia hill is, and so on. I've discussed this with KTH, HWN, and HUT(w7-type), and everyone has provided positive feedback. After getting the blessings of our club president, I am putting out this email to let you know that beginning next Thursday evening, November 13, 2008, at 7:30 P.M. we will try and kick off this net and see how it goes. This will not be a "formal" net, but really just a time and place that people can come, ask any question they want without feeling mic-shy, do radio tests, learn radio etiquette and things like that. It may only be a thing where some of us simply monitor just-in-case, or it may morph into another popular net where we all just get together, like the A.M. net, but no one is "in charge" and there won't be lengthy "interrogations". In structuring this net, it seems to me that the knowledge and experience of people in the Santa Barbara ham community is vast and very diverse. Therefore, in my mind, for this to be successful and beneficial, it would be great to have everyone participate to the extent that their schedules permit to help spread the knowledge and experience we all have to bring new people into amateur radio and SBARC. Again, this will not be a formal net where someone is in charge and controls the net. I'm shooting for a forum where everyone and every question or topic is welcomed. I think it would add to the success of this "elmer" net to create awareness at key events like the licensing classes offered by Bob Pizzi (AC6PZ), as well as at the exit to the VE sessions for the new hams. Additionally, I've been told we even have a number of HT's available to loan out at the club station in order to help get folks on the air and involved. In addition to the personal satisfaction of helping new hams get started, it may also benefit the club by way of member recruitment and therefore public service involvement. I hope to hear everyone on TZ Thursday! If we get just one person involved, it will be a success.

Reminder: Hamfest Dinner

Hi everyone, Just a reminder that our 2009 Hamfest meeting will be tomorrow (Monday) evening at 6:30PM at Rusty's Pizza on upper State St. We have Rob Griffin's support (the SB Section Manager) and it is now a matter of contacting the section clubs. A couple of new ideas came up last week that I think are excellent. One of them is to have a blog describing the status of Hamfest as we start to build. Another one that I haven't heard of anyone doing is to have a Forum where registered sellers can post "ads" of what they will be bringing. Along that line, we could have an area where people who will be attending can post their wants. A suggestion that came from Harold Scot, WA6EAT, at the SARC meeting was to see if we can set a record with the most people taking a VE session, the Guiness Book of Records type of thing. We are still coming up with ideas, but it is close to the time where the leaders need to step up to the plate to make it happen. We want this to be an event that people WANT to attend, and it will take quite a bit of work and dedication to make that happen. We will have a lot of public exposure by being at the Earl Warren Fairgrounds, and if we all work together, I can see every club in the section participating being a part of a hugh membership expansion! Hamfest Planning Meeting Tonight

Hi everyone, Just a reminder that we will be having a Hamfest planning meeting tonight at Rusty's Pizza on upper State Street next to Burger King. We will start at 6:30PM and plan on ending by 8:30PM. As I said earlier, these are my goals: * Build a Hamfest team that will continue into the future. * Make the content of our Hamfest spectacular so people WANT to attend as opposed to attending only because of tradition. * Provide a means to follow up on people interested and get them involved in ham radio. I would also like to find someone interested in online market research that can find the interest level in what we come up with. This will be a great learning experience for anyone interested in Internet Market Research!!! A couple of us have some experience with marketing, both online and offline, so you won't be left out in the cold as to how to do the research. The online research will mainly involve using Google and the many tools they provide. Please be thinking of what activities/demonstrations/speakers will attract people. Since we will have the Earl Warren Showgrounds sign to help with exposure, we need to also consider people not in ham radio but would be interested in finding out more. QRP Dinner this Friday before the SBARC meeting Guess what! The QRP Special Interest Group (SIG) will be going to dinner together this Friday night before the October SBARC club meeting. Come and join us. We always have a very nice time, talk QRP, and down some of the best Italian food in Goleta. We go to Presto Pasta, which is at 5764 Calle Real. We start showing up there at 5:30 PM. We hams wait until all have arrived before starting to eat, just like one pig waits for another! After dinner, we will drive over to Fairview Ave., turn right and go less than 0.25 mile to the Goleta Union School District facility, which is right across the street from the Goleta Library. That is where we hold our monthly club meetings. Our guest speaker for the evening will be Dr. Michael Barber, W6MRB, our very own Membership Chairman. Did you know that Michael is the CEO of the Santa Barbara Instrument Group which specializes in Astrophysical Photographic equipment that is famous the world over? SBIG is the manufacturer of a variety of CCD Cameras that have become the instruments of choice for most astro imagers. Michael will discuss CCD imaging for beginners and intermediate users, show some incredible outer-space photos and answer your many questions about CCD imaging. 2009 Hamfest Kickoff Meeting Reminder

Hi everyone, Just a reminder that tomorrow evening will be the kickoff meeting for the 2009 Hamfest. Who - Anyone interested in seeing our hamfest continue to grow and prosper Where - Sizzler's Restaurant in Goleta approximately at the corner of Kellogg and Hollister When - Tuesday 10/14/2008 at 6:00 PM Next year will be a great opportunity to continue the building of our hamfest, and taking it up to the next level. As some of you already know, we are planning on having the 2009 Hamfest at the Earl Warren Showgrounds. The day is also being changed to Saturday as traffic should be lighter allowing people attending from out of town an easier trip. This will be primarily a brainstorming and planning meeting to set goals for what we want to do next year. We can figure out how to accomplish those goals in a later meeting :)! Help with Battery Charger?

I have a Schumacher SE-520MA battery charger, that seems to be having problems. Here is a link to a picture and information: http://www.batterysales.com/schumacher-detail.cfm?model=SE-520MA I have been using it to charge my 105Ah deep cycle AGM battery, as well as a 7Ah battery. When things were working properly, an LED would indicate a full charge, afterwhich the charger would switch into a maintenance mode. Over time, the LED would go on and off at various intervals, indicating that the battery was being kept charged. However, now the LED no longer indicates a full charge. I know the LED is working, because it will light up if I unplug the charger and connect the terminals to the battery. There is also voltage at the terminals while the charger is powered up. In addition, the batteries appear to be mostly drained. I am unable to transmit on my IC-7000 while connected to the 105Ah battery, which is a few years old, and has been charged only a few times. Does anyone have experience with this charger, who might know what is wrong with it? ---Michael, NO6O

2009 Hamfest Kickoff Dinner

Hi everyone, The board last night approved the change of our Hamfest venue from the Elks to Earl Warren Showgrounds. Since this is a jump in the scale, we are starting early to build the event. I volunteered to be the Hamfest Chair for next year, and we need to start now in building the team to put it on. It is also possible that this could be a section wide Hamfest as well. I've always had a vision of what we could do with Hamfest and this change was something I had in mind when I chaired my first Hamfest back in 1995. And now as back then, I am promoting the thought that we are not only working on the 2009 Hamfest, but also on future hamfests. I have several goals in mind: * Build a Hamfest team that will continue into the future. * Make the content of our Hamfest spectacular so people WANT to attend as opposed to attending only because of tradition. * Provide a means to follow up on people interested and get them involved in ham radio. The kickoff dinner will be Tuesday, October 14 at 6:00PM at the Sizzler's Restaurant in Goleta, and will be a brainstorming/planning session. A number of changes are in the works to expand what we have done in the past, and the first will be weekly dinner meetings to work on and keep everything on track. I was told many years ago that the more people that are involved in an event, the more successful that event will be.
