I've never looked at the insides of one of these, all I know is that it doesn't play. And of course "It all lights up and everything" :)
Anyway, from what I could see in the poor pics of the mech, it looks fairly simple. Are they easy? Trying to decide if I want to take the job or not since I have an open spot in the shop.

They are mechanically difficult so a manual is a MUST! Get one from Victory Glass online. I have an 1948 aluminum model. After almost 8 decades small parts begin to wear out and need to be replaced. Selector issues are a few as well as rebuilding the amplifier. They used a Jensen 15" dynamic range speaker. Overall the machine has excellent fidelity. Suggest reckoning the speaker. The Wurlitzer 1015 production run was 60,400 but the trashcan series was over 80,000 produced. Good luck. Ed

After talking to the owner of it, I decided to accept the Symphonola. He gave me a down payment and understands that I will be learning as I go. It arrived today and Wow, what a cool looking machine! The mech seems to be very well made, and the motor mounts, how cool are they!? This box has been on the road a thousand + miles. The shipping bolts were snug, but the wood on the left and right, that the springs sit on, only had 1 bolt out of 4. So the mech was hanging to the right, and I think the only thing holding it from going further is the selection knob shaft. It might be bent a little. Also the tone arm was below the mech board hanging from its wires. I lifted the mech and installed the missing bolts and plugged it in. Upon starting, the worm gear was grinding on the fiber gear. :( But the gear looks OK :) It has a hell of a lot of play there. I shimmed it but after it made 6 or so cycles, the gears acted up again, so I suppose more shims will be needed or something I didn't see is loose. Hopefully that is in the manual. And on the subject of the manual, I have the manual for a 1941 on a CD that will print out very nice, is it the same as the 1940? I didn't order one for the 1940 yet because I wasn't certain it was coming or not. I'll order one on Monday but I'd like to get into it further, sooner. They don't always have the manuals "in stock" and can take some time if they have to print one out.

First I want to thank everyone who responded to this thread.
I don't believe it is the same exact box as in the auction I had listed, it's just the same model.
I have it working fairly well, it liked to jamb up a lot but has gone a couple hundred cycles working well since the last tweaking of the copper comb like thing, what ever it is called. (Do Trashcans have that part also?) The last time it did jam it seemed that this part https://tonymiklos.imgbb.com/ had something to do with it. I have no idea what it is for. The pic showing the "pin" from the side shows a spring on it. The spring is quite strong and no way would the flat spring (part missing one screw and turned down) be able to overcome that pressure. This is unlike the other jams which were from it pulling more than 1 tray out at a time.
I don't know anything about trashcans and older. I don't know if a trashcan has these same parts, (I need to order a trashcan manual) The manuals I received (AMR R-309 and 381) are similar to what I have here, except this box does not have an electrical selector or push buttons of any kind to select, just a knob to turn for your next selection.
So again thanks to all and if you happen to know what the part in the pictures is for, I'd love to know!

The model you are repairing is the earliest of that style mech, and many changes were made shortly after. I've not seen that part before and it's not on the late 30's or trashcan mechs. I assume there is a post or roller that pushes that post as the tray driver is moving back towards the helix. The flat spring steel is probably just a guide. I would assume it has something to do with releasing the previous selected tray or possibly advancing the next tray if a customer put more money in and didn't change the selector knob. This would play a different song instead of repeating. On Thursday, December 12, 2024 at 05:37:50 PM EST, Tony Miklos via Jukebox-list jukebox-list@lists.netlojix.com wrote:

The mech itself is not hard to repair but keep in mind that at this age they are usually "stuck". It can require quite a bit of disassembly especially if previous owners used that hideous Lubriplate. The trays in particular are usually sticky because there are long thin tracks they ride in. The amplifiers are not as plentiful and finding transformer replacements can be difficult. Finally, the prewar castings are prone to warping and cracking. Some so badly that many install trashcan mechs in place. Be prepared to rewire all the lamp cord. Looking at manuals I don't think this is a 1940 model! This machine has a coin push shoot that takes either a dime or nickel. At 2 plays for a dime, I don't see how one could select more than one record, however the credit unit goes to 20. To select, there is one knob in the middle that turns a chain, that turns a shaft with the spiral things on it to stop the mech at the right record. Actually with it being in another building, I'm not sure but I think it can only advance one selection at a time. The mech is clean and nothing is sticky The link below is the actual box at auction. The amp, IF original, uses a 5Z3, a 6A6, and two 6B6s. The speaker is not original. I haven't yet powered up the amp, I have to remove it to make sure it's rebuilt, plus I haven't yet fixed the tone arm and smashed cartridge.

Typically that chain arrangement in Symphonolas is used from the spiral tray indexer to drive a record playing indicator and not to make the selection.
The mech takes off as soon as you insert the coin. So your first selection needs to be made ahead of time. After the first record is released, you can make the second selection. The helix is designed to spin freely, and it will cycle more than one spot each time, depending on where you turn the knob.

I was thinking of that selection scenario but thought, who would make such a dumb machine? I was sort of thinking that if you put in a dime for 2 plays, wait for the record to be selected then turn the dial to your second selection before going to sit down, but I was stuck with the idea that it would only advance 1 record, which now sounds wrong, I'll see tomorrow. I'm now guessing that it was only advancing one record at a time because I wasn't turning the knob for my next selection.
Most of the time I worked on it was getting the worm gear so it didn't slip (and strip) the fiber gear. I now see what you mean about the weak pot metal frame. I think it was flexing enough during the hardest part of it's cycle when it pulls the spring loaded turntable down. To help it I installed a little chain link of sorts to make the TT lift springs have less tension. Too little and it won't go up all the way. With that and shimming the two gears a little tighter than I would like, seems to have that part running smooth. With a bunch of household chores to do, I didn't get a whole lot of time on this clunker.

BTW, I turned down this repair because the owner contacted me two years ago and was supposed to deliver that weekend. He never showed. So about a month ago, he contacted me again. I politely declined because I'm not getting fooled again. He's a lawyer and I could smell trouble if something went wrong. Maybe not, I just didn't get a good vibe. Good luck, Jim On Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at 01:33:26 PM EST, Tony Miklos via Jukebox-list jukebox-list@lists.netlojix.com wrote:

Actually with it being in another building, I'm not sure but I think it can only advance one selection at a time. The mech is clean and nothing is sticky The link below is the actual box at auction. The amp, IF original, uses a 5Z3, a 6A6, and two 6B6s. The speaker is not original. I haven't yet powered up the amp, I have to remove it to make sure it's rebuilt, plus I haven't yet fixed the tone arm and smashed cartridge.

Finally, the prewar castings are prone to warping and cracking. Some so badly that many install trashcan mechs in place. Be prepared to rewire all the lamp cord.

Anyway, from what I could see in the poor pics of the mech, it looks fairly simple. Are they easy? Trying to decide if I want to take the job or not since I have an open spot in the shop.

I'm curious where you are that we both talked to the same guy. I think he said it was in CA somewhere and got shipped to Atlanta. From there some moving guys delivered it to me. About a 4.5 hour drive.
I have a cure for no shows. If they call again (I only got to do this once), but I told him that first I need $100 for the no show, then a deposit on the repair. He agreed to it!

Tony This juke is a 1936 model Symphonola, 12 selection. 1st year when Seeburg just getting started with multiple cabinet models A- F. Years ago i had a B model. Lots of lubrication to get the trays to slide. U can see the title strip holder on the front of the juke has 4 sections of 3. The round selection knob was used that year on all models 12 selections. 1937 models Rex & Royale had 20 selections & a rectangle selector instead of round. U can see these on Pinball- rebel website or jukebox history/ seeburg website.
