I remember many questions about model 2900 on this forum and now I have a head scratcher, well for me anyway. I’m trying to figure out why relay RY5 located in the amplifier burns up. I have -29.5vdc across it (calls for -28v) and all the voltages around it seem to be very close as well. When I take an AC measurement across RY5 I get 15vac, not sure if that’s significant? It’s been recapped but C35 (3000@50v) is original and tests good with an esr meter. Any thoughts on what might be causing this relay to overheat? I’ve never worked in a model 2900. Thanks, Mauro

It "burns up"? Do you mean it got fried and the new one is running very hot? If you check it's resistance when cold, then when it's very hot, does the resistance go down? That would indicate the windings are starting to short out. Without a schematic in front of me I can't say, but you may need to remove the wire(s) from one of the terminals to get an accurate reading.
How fast is it getting hot? Was it "smoking" hot? It is quite common for relays that stay energized to get hot.

Yes, it actually burned up 2 coils and this was my friend’s last one from a parts chassis. He asked me to look at it as he was frustrated with it. With the amplifier powered on my bench it is very hot to touch within 2-3 minutes and it will burn up after 1 or 2 plays. I will check the resistance today and post it. Thanks,

I disconnected and measured the resistance of the coil in RY5, 39 ohms. Not sure that’s good or bad as I don’t know the original specs but it seems to pull in properly, just overheats.

That's really odd. The right voltage and the right coil, I'm stumped.

Where did the replacements come from? 2900s or newer models?
In the 3300 I seem to recall there is a resistor in series with the RY-5 coil. I do not remember any in series with the coil in the 2900. So maybe if it came from another model, a resistor would be required in series with the coil?

Thanks for the information, the answer may well be to add a resistor, as he is not sure exactly which chassis the replacement came from. It’s just odd that the original one burned up. I’m going to check the schematic from a 3300 and see what I need to add, and then try it out again. Thank you,
