Hamfest is Coming- August 16th

To all Radio Operators and members of SBARC Come join us all at Hamfest 2015. This year the event is at Stow Grove, Area #1 (the big one) and will be on Sunday, August 16th from 1000 until 1500. There will be the famous Bar-b-que put on by our own Tom Saunders. There will be raffle prizes. There will be games. There will be good times to be had by all. No admission, but BYOB. ARRLSB - ARRL Santa Barbara Section Mailing List -------------------------------------------------------------------------- FYI - Please pass to your newsletter editor HAMCON 2015, the 2015 ARRL Southwestern Division Convention, is September 11-13, 2015 at the Torrance Marriott Redondo Beach Hotel (same location as the 2007 and 2011 conventions.) See What Makers Do - SB Hackerspace Open House

The Santa Barbara Hackerspace group (aka SBHX and SB Makerspace) has moved to an exciting new facility at 5782 Thornwood Drive in Goleta. The general public is invited to its Grand Opening open house at 6pm on July 17, 2015. SBHX and SBARC members have much in common. Several members belong to both groups. There is great potential synergy in the overlap of these groups since both embrace radios, computers, old and new technologies, construction, education and creativity. I encourage you to attend this open house to meet the friendly and passionate members of SBHX and to see their new facility and what they do. Ask them about ham radio and they can tell that several of their members are active hams. They have had an operational HF, VHF/UHF station for a long time. They have launched balloons with ham radio on board, and they are producing a 2-meter APRS transmitter using Arduino technology. Don't hesitate to become a member of SB Hackerspace. It might be the best thing you can do today to make ham radio even more exciting for you. The SBARC New Technologies Committee promotes the integration of new technologies into Amateur Radio. Let's all team up to use new technologies to enhance amateur radio, interest more and younger participants, teach each other about new devices and processes and more effectively serve ourselves and the community. Quadcopter photos- Rasnow Peak

Folks: The Rabbit Radio Group under the direction of Emmett Dunlap, wa6cot, outdid themselves on Friday by mounting a cross arm to a 150 ft tower at Rasnow Peak which overlooks Thousand Oaks. The present antenna system is operational from the short tower at the bottom. Rabbit Radio has local 440 coverage of Santa Barbara County from Santa Ynez Peak and linked coverage over Southern California. All the personnel on top of the tower are Amateur Radio Operators. Jim Scott, kk6sxb, and I attended as line handlers but with 16 personnel on hand it was well covered. Apparently the adjustment to our time on Thursday is scary to the Wall Street folks but the article also warns public safety and others of the issue. Santa Barbara 100 Ultra Run

Santa Barbara 100 Ultra Run The Santa Barbara 100 (Ultra Run- formerly known as the Blacksmith Endurance Race and the DRTE 100) is coming up on Friday July 10th, Saturday July 11th and part of the Sunday July 12th . The race will start at 1800 on Friday, July 10th and will continue until shut off time of noon on Sunday, July 12th. Most of the activity is on Friday and Saturday. I believe there may be a 10k race on Saturday as well. The course is the same as last year except the 50 mile turn-around point will be at Lagunita Del Cielo, which is closer than the previous turn around point last year. The Romero Camuesa Aid Station will be further down the dirt road so it won't be as windy as the last times. Both of these off roads stations have been manned. I need radio operators who have either participated before or who have not but just want to have a good time in the backwoods of Santa Barbara. This event shows how critical HAM radio can be in an area where cell phones do not work. Experience is handy but not required. Most all the positions that require off-road vehicles have been filled. All other locations can be driven up to on paved roads. We will be using the SBARC Rover to be Net Control and it will be placed high on the mountain ridge where it has been for that last two years. We have the Rover repeater and as a secondary we will be using OBB (147.000). I know many of you have told me of your interest to participate again, but please get back to me on the location you want to work and the hours that you are available. The shifts will be 5 to 5 (either 5AM to 5PM or 5PM to 5AM). You need to tell me what hours you are available. I would love to place at least two operators at each location so there can be a relief person at all times. The hours listed are not written in stone and I would appreciate any hours that you can participate. SBARC 2015 Annual Bazaar on Saturday, July 18

Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club 2015 Annual Bazaar on Saturday, July 18 This is the event that many of us have been waiting for. The Bazaar is where we play a great game of Musical Garages and where Junque is King. Everyone has a chance to finally clear out all that wonderful junque that has been piling up. Even with all of our good intentions, we just never got around to building it, repairing it, modifying it or getting rid of it. Here is our chance. This event is a once-a-year happening and it is going to take place on Saturday morning, July 18, in the parking lot of the Goleta Union School District, 401 N. Fairview Ave. in Goleta, which is directly across the street from the Goleta Library. This lot is just to the north of our Club's monthly meeting room. How about nearly every kind of radio related thing you can think of -- things like antennas, tower parts or complete units, radios that work, radios that almost work or used to work, all sorts of parts to build things with such as electronic components, wire, coax, insulators, telephone equipment, repeater components, semiconductors, vacuum tubes, test equipment, computer related junque, software, printers, memory, books and magazines, hardware, surplus military equipment, power supplies, soldering irons, older amateur radios and on and on. We're even working on getting excess industrial parts and materials. There is also a Red Tag table where you may bring along a piece of gear that you don't particularly want to just toss on the pile but would prefer to ask a price for. The rules are that you or someone you appoint must be near your goodie to sell it for you and remove it after the event or any time before. Also, you get to keep 90% of what it sells for and SBARC gets to keep 10% of it. Hey, that's a pretty good deal. The Bazaar runs from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. Be advised that the earliest bird gets the longest worm. So here is your chance to keep the little woman happy. Either she will be delighted that you have finally decided to clean out all that wonderful junque or she will be dancing up and down when she sees that trinket you have brought home with you! Oh yeah, sure. Bring all your friends. The Club needs the money. Speaking of which, we will have several of our favorite people acting as salesmen and you can make such a deal with them. Go ahead, insult them with a ridiculous offer. They'll bargain with you. Bring lots of green or checks. We're not set up to take plastic at the Bazaar. It's probably going to be a hot morning so we will also have ice cold drinks and donuts for sale. And another thing, don't be shy about taking home a whole bunch of junque. What you don't use you can always bring back to next year's Bazaar. That just enhances the Musical Garages idea. Now, don't tell anyone, but at some point in time that morning, if you listen carefully, you can hear announced that everything that has a price marked on it is just half price! It gets crazy. But wait there's more -- as the clock approaches a certain hour, you can hear announced that everything is FREE! Of course these price reductions do not pertain to anything on the Red Tag table or the refreshments. If you wait for the price reductions, someone will probably buy what you want. You've been warned. I plan on getting all the good junque so if you really are thinking of taking home something special, better get there really early. In the beginning of the event, you can look it all over and keep in mind what you can't live without. Then when the bell rings, run over to it and grab it and take it to one of our salesmen. They'll be obvious there. Another thing, after you pay for your item and get your receipt, take it over to your vehicle and lock it up in there and come back and shop some more. It's a terrible thing when something you paid for is then bought again by someone else and taken home! Do you have a table that you can put your junque on? Please get there early in the morning between 6:00 AM and 7:30 AM and set up your table, ask for help to unload your junque and let's bring it in. The entrance to this parking lot is just after you pull into the main parking lot entrance off of Fairview Ave. and then make a quick right turn onto the short driveway which leads to our area. Follow the signs. After you unload your junque, please park your vehicle in the large parking lot and make room for others to unload their junque. Oh, if you have one, bring along a hand truck so you won't have to lift heavy things. Put your name on it. See you all on Saturday morning, July 18. Put it on your calendar now!
