Reminder: On foot transmitter hunt near Santa Barbara on Saturday
by Marvin Johnston 11 Dec '15

11 Dec '15

The weather forecast is clear skies and a high of 69 degrees for our next on-foot transmitter hunting session at Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta. As of this writing, nobody has signed up to build antennas and attenuators, so we won't have a building session unless someone registers with Marvin Johnston, KE6HTS (marvin(a)west.net) right away. Starting at 10 AM, there will be practice transmitters and a beginner-level international-rules course on the two-meter band. An optional 80-meter fox transmitter may also be on the air to find. The site area is slightly less than 140 acres. It is relatively flat, making it a good site for foxtailers of all skill levels. If you need some one-on-one help to get started at finding transmitters, just ask. Full-color orienteering maps will be available. You may start the courses at any time until 12 noon. Courses close at 2 PM. A limited amount of RDF gear will be available for loan to beginners. Directions to Lake Los Carneros: From US 101 about 8 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north about 1/4 mile and turn right into the Stow House parking lot. There should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white orienteering flag. The hunt start will probably be in the parking lot. If that is too crowded, we will move to a nearby picnic area. For your GPS navigation system: 300 North Los Carneros Road, Goleta, CA 34.44416N 119.85446W Ham radio talk-in is on the WB6OBB repeater, 147.000(+) PL 131.8. 73, Joe Moell K0OV

Hello Ken and all, The fact that we participated made this a worthwhile event. I couldn't attend this year because I had to be out of town. Next year, I'll do everything I can to take part, as I've enjoyed many times in the past. Thank you for being part of the effort this year. Rod WB9KMO -------- Original message -------- From: Ken Alker <ka6ken(a)alker.net> Date: 12/06/2015 1:16 AM (GMT-07:00) To: sbarc-list(a)lists.netlojix.com Subject: Re: [Sbarc-list] Field Day The results have been published (see link below). There were 2720 entries. We are entry #2193 with 326 points (see my emails dated 7/28/15). So, we were in the top 80%. We should be able to top this easily - I'm looking forward to a great turn-out at the shack next year! Field Day
by Ken Alker 06 Dec '15

1) Santa Barbara Independent coverage of K6TZ Field Day: http://www.independent.com/news/2015/jul/21/amateur-radio-club-competes-fie… Please note, someone named John Kendall put what I believe is an erroneous comment at the bottom of this article. It needs to be corrected. Can someone with knowledge about the radios in the shack please submit a response (politely, despite his demeanor)? Is there really a marine radio in there? Perhaps someone could submit the exact radio and model number and capabilities (not marine?) in a reply (assuming he's referencing the one that the left-most operator is using??). Or, let me know, and I can submit. 2) Below is a summary of the Field Day entry form that I submitted this morning. It is due by 2059UTC today. If anyone sees any errors/corrections, please let me know [by calling me at 685-2030 as I'll be away from email]. I submitted 176 points for the below listed contacts, which includes bonus points for media coverage (thanks, Brian), and bonus points for submitting results via the ARRL web site. The form requests the number of participants but I'm not sure how many operators we had (Theo, who ran the event - thanx!, Leigh, me, and a new member/visitor who brought his son [sorry - forgot name]) - any I missed? I'm not sure who is pictured in the article at left - perhaps another operator I missed? History of the manufacturer RCA (RCA Victor Co. Inc.)
by Darryl Widman 27 Oct '15

27 Oct '15

My friends, Perhaps I have more interest in the history of radio and television than you because I have made it my life's work. But at the same time, I think that you will find it and the videos awaiting your viewing most interesting. Please take your time and learn about what many of us took for granted. We just turned a knob and, presto, entertainment. RCA Victor was right in there from the beginning. This is about that great company and offers you a glance at what went on behind the scenes, things that most don't even realize. So, please enjoy a bit of American history. I especially enjoyed it as I was an RCA dealer for 8 years in Montecito and in Santa Barbara. 73, Darryl Widman, KF6DI http://www.radiomuseum.org/dsp_hersteller_detail.cfm?Company_id=743

SB Veterans Half Marathon
by Rick Whitaker 26 Oct '15

26 Oct '15

Santa Barbara Veterans Half Marathon 2015 Saturday, November 7, 2015 7:00 until noon The Santa Barbara International Marathon is not dead. It has morphed into the Santa Barbara Veterans Marathon and then again into the Santa Barbara Veterans Half Marathon. Due to the cost of permits and the lower enrollment than expected, it was determined that the full marathon would be cancelled and all efforts would be put into the promotion of the Half Marathon. As such it has turned into an interesting course. They start at UCSB then run own the Ward Memorial Freeway. The freeway will be shut down for the first time ever for an event. The runners get off at Hollister and run down to Mentor where they go down Patterson to the bike path. From there the course is the same as all previous years. The difference is that this year they have many more water stops and music locations. Because of the extra water stops and the four relay locations, I will need just as many radio operators as before. The race starts early and as such many locations on the course are done by 8:00 to 9:00 AM. The entire event is over before noon. If you can help in the early part of the race you can be done in only a couple of hours. I can use someone who can patrol the bike path between Patterson and Modoc as well. Please let me know if you are available on Saturday, November 7th from any time between 7:00 AM and noon and if you have a preferred location. Please get back to me soon as I will need your T-shirt size by next Friday and there is a chance we can arrange to hand them out before the event this time. I have attached a map of the course. It does not go into but a small section of Goleta, and stays on the ocean side of the 101 Freeway.
