To SBARC all: Interesting comparison here between AIS (160 Mhz) VHF signals received at station 533, 500 ft La Vigia Hill, and at station 1360, Santa Ynez Peak, 4300 ft. Coastal VHF ducting does not favor either site as the "K" factor shifts back and forth (182 NM vs 190 NM). Overall average is nearly identical. When trying for VHF DX just follow the AIS pattern to learn how each site is doing then go for the DX at either one. Julian Nott

SBARC members, It is with great sadness that I am writing to let our membership know of the untimely passing of a renowned and fascinating member of the Santa Barbara community. Although Julian Nott was not a ham, he possessed the spirit of ingenuity and creativity that is so pervasive among our ranks. Julian was the founder of the modern ballooning movement. He held 79 world ballooning records and created the first hot air balloon with a pressurized cabin. In May 2017, he broke the world record for a high altitude civilian tandem skydive jumping at just under 32,000 feet. Another hot air balloon he flew to 55,000 feet is now on display in the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. Prior to his death, Julian was developing an entirely new system for ballooning in which conventional ballast was replaced with cryogenic helium, a shift that was changing the course of balloon history. Julian died this week on Tuesday, March 26, several days after suffering multiple injuries during a ground accident following a successful balloon flight and landing in Warner Springs, California. I came to know Julian personally through my high-altitude amateur radio balloon activities with students at Anacapa School in Santa Barbara and as a fellow aviator based out of Santa Barbara Airport. Although Julian was usually the most interesting person in the room, he was gifted at making others, particularly my students and me, feel empowered and important. It was an honor and pleasure to know him. His passing leaves a void not only in the Santa Barbara community but in the world. Club needs to sell two Whalen heavy duty metal shelving units

SBARC needs to sell two metal Whalen shelving units. They were purchased from Costco and are like new. They have been used indoors but were moved outdoors today. Hoping someone can use these ASAP before they get rained upon. Each rack has 4 shelves and supports 2000 pounds. The size is 77" long x 24" deep x 72" high. The club paid $160 each plus tax. We'd like to get as close to original cost as possible, but (hopefully) not less than $120 each. Please note this will be supporting our club. Two are available. Please spread the news. Ken

Diablo wind sock freed itself.

The Diablo Peak wind sock got it self hung up on the mast clamp for the past several days. I just happened to see a west wind come up and could see it start to work itself loose. I actually saw it break loose..... finally. Bill Talanian

DMR Codeplug Hell

Hi again SBARC! In preparation for tomorrow's DMR talk, I've been working on a new codeplug for my Anytone AT-878UV and I have a few questions about programming channel lists. The attached PDF file is a spreadsheet from the Anytone CPS (customer programming software) that shows 4 formats and sets of settings for the channels: the empty radio, the way I received it pre-programmed, Brian's SBARC codeplug, and the one from PAPA. The fields that confuse me are highlighted in grey. Updated local frequency lists

Hello SBARC, I updated my spreadsheets with local repeater, simples, PD/FI/Sherrif, transport, walkie-talkie, etc. frequencies. There's a zip file at, http://heaveneverywhere.com/stp/SB_1902_FreqLists.zip Most of these are in the right format to be loaded into the chirp software, some are for CPS software. It has a README file that describes the contents. I can also send you the Ventura County ACS – EOC Frequency Lists, but it's marked "not for public distribution" so I'm not including it here. Enjoy! Just a reminder for the ARDF practice tomorrow (Saturday) at Lake Los Carneros. The weather forecast shows there will probably be some rain tonight, but it should be done by about 4AM. Thanks! Marvin, KE6HTS ********** Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta, CA will be the site of southern California's next international-style on-foot foxhunting session on Saturday, February 9. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment are not required. Experts will be on hand to teach you the basic techniques of on-foot radio direction-finding (RDF). Bring the kids and grandkids, then go out on the course with them! There is no charge for participation. If you have receivers, scanners, directional antennas, attenuators, or other equipment suitable for on-foot RDF, be sure to bring it. Make sure all batteries are fresh. A limited amount of RDF gear will be available for loan to beginners. Besides some easy two-meter fox transmitters to help you learn and test your equipment, there will be a beginner-level international-rules course on the two-meter band, designed by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. One or more optional 80-meter fox transmitters may also be on the air. The site area is slightly less than 140 acres. It is relatively flat, making it a good site for foxtailers of all skill levels. If you need some one-on-one help to get started at finding transmitters, just ask. Full-color orienteering maps will be available. For those who want to build RDF gear for use with their own two-meter hand-held radios or scanners, Marvin will have kits for measuring-tape yagis and active attenuators. Also available is an assembled and tested assembly that includes the power switch, BNC connector, housing and battery, ready to install as the tape measure beam is built. There will be tools and soldering stations for building. If you're not an electronic technician, don't worry because there will be experts to help you. If you want to build an antenna/attenuator kit, you must register in advance.& nbsp; Send e-mail to Marvin (marvin(a)west.net) to pre-register and get more information about equipment. If you already have equipment and just want to hunt transmitters, you don't need to pre-register. If it takes place, the building session will start at 9:00 AM. Please be prompt. Transmitter hunting will begin about 10:00 AM. You may start out on the courses at any time until 12 noon. Courses close at 2 PM. For those interested, we will meet at a local restaurant after all the transmitters have been picked up for further discussion of ARDF. Directions to Lake Los Carneros: From US 101 about 8 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north about 1/4 mile and turn right into the Stow House parking lot. There should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white orienteering flag. The hunt start will probably be in the parking lot. If that is too crowde d, we will move to a nearby picnic area. Ham radio talk-in is on the WB6OBB repeater, 147.000(+) PL 131.8. Radio programming: Up-to-date Codeplug

Hello all, I'm transitioning from a Baofeng HT to an Anytone DMR radio, so I have to leave the comfort of the CHIRP programming tool. I've RTFM'ed, learned the new programming tools, and downloaded the DMR data sets. The Anytone codeplug on the SBARC site is missing the wider-area analog repeaters, however. Does anyone know of an easy way to move freq. lists from CHIRP spreadsheets to the Anytone Codeplug csv format, or of a maximal codeplug?
