Looks like 2X 4-1000’s for RF modulated by 2X 4–1000.; could be (2 x 2) 4-400’s; hard to tell from the photo. That’s similar to what I had when in N. Hollywood (K6SVQ) where I built w/ the help my HS electric shop teacher & a HAM neighbor RF engineer from Hughes AC. Drove the RF stage w/ a Viking II and the modulator (4 810’s); yes AM days, w/ an old Hi-Fi amp, by replacing the output transformer. The HV transformer was from a pole pig supplied by a friend of my Dad's from L.A. Dept. of Water & Power & the modulation transformer was army surplus I found in an army-navy store in San Fernando. The plate transformer (w/o oil-filled case) resided in a plastic barrel outside the shack because there was no room for it inside as the shack was a 5’ x 12’ storage room off the garage w/ the big PA & PS in a rack at one end of the room, a Viking desk KW in the middle against the long wall and the other small end was the op. stn. w/ a Gonset GSB-100, Halicraft SX-101A, borrowed Collins 75S1, etc. Yes there was room only for one person inside to sit. Antennas at that time was a HB 5-el 20M yagi @ 72’ & 5-el 15M yagi 10’ above that on an old guyed Tristao crank-up. Note the rotor has a unique story of it’s own: When 15+, I was visiting an aunt & uncle in Long Beach and there was a 60’ telephone pole w/ a 3-el 20 & a 3-el 10 yagi over a “strange looking box” on top of the pole. I knocked on the door and the woman who answered said that the pole and antennas were of the previous owner and they had no means of removing it. I asked if I removed the pole and antennas could I have it. She called her husband and they both said YES as long as we did no damage to their property. I brought my Dad (general contractor) over to look and he was skeptical but said maybe. Note, at that time I had a DX35, an HQ-100 and a Gotham 3-el 15M yagi on a telescoping push-up 30’ mast that I rotated w/ a pipe wrench. Well, the next week my Dad told me he’d supply two laborers to do the work and the following Saturday, my Dad, his two guys & I went to LB, removed the two antennas, the “strange box” (an E.F. Johnson rotor) and cut down the pole in 2’ pieces w/ a chain saw. Years later I sold that rotor for $1000 to a guy in Palos Verdes. You can see the same model rotor as you drive by on the 405 S. adjacent to Olympic Blvd; what used to be Henry Radio! The 10M yagi was 6-el on another old guyed 54’ tower w/o any mfg. identified that I had bought for $40 from a junk yard. Some of the tower guy wires were tied to the bases of LA Dept, of W & P poles. (Note: I had the W & P noise guy out multiple times who arranged for spraying of HV insulators on the poles in the area and there was never a word of complaint from anybody in the crews.) For 40M, I had two phased verticals, base loaded, elevated 10’ off ground in trees w/ relays to switch orientation from broadside to end-fire. 80M had two dipoles, each fed at the top of the 72’ tower sloping to trees w/ a NE/SW or NW/SE orientation relay at the apex. After high school & the first two years of college, I was married, lived in an apt. in Van Nuys and had sold off all the antennas, towers, the big PA & radios. After completing college, had a design engineering job @ Ocean Technology & we bought a tri-level house in Northridge, got emersed in water skiing, sailing, & 2 children. When bussing of children began we moved to SB and ultimately got re-involved w/ HAM radio. No tower but the 4’ x 4’ x 10’ deep chunk on concrete still sits in our rear yard here; another story! > On Dec 22, 2022, at 4:27 AM, sbarc-list-request(a)lists.netlojix.com wrote: > > Send SBARC-list mailing list submissions to > sbarc-list(a)lists.netlojix.com > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://lists.netlojix.com/mailman/listinfo/sbarc-list > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > sbarc-list-request(a)lists.netlojix.com > > You can reach the person managing the list at > sbarc-list-owner(a)lists.netlojix.com > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of SBARC-list digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Incredible rainfall rate very early Sunday morning
by Dave Schmidt 12 Dec '22

12 Dec '22

Saturday's rain for me in Ventura did not start falling at measurable quantities until 8pm. By midnight we got 0.7". Very early Sunday morning, I could hear it dumping outside for a while but I was all cozy in my bed so I didn't get up. Was very surprised to see the total of Saturday and Sunday of 3.04" !! Much higher than anyone near me on the automated rainfall website got. I have a cup style 'manual' rain gauge on a fence that I use to verify what my automated rain gauge says, and it too showed the same amount. Take a look at the rate of rain I got. 1.6" rainfall rate an hour! Incredible! Dave AI6VX [image: image.png]

Fwd: [K6MEP] µField Day this Saturday!
by Dave Schmidt 27 Oct '22

27 Oct '22

Just in case any SBARC folks are interested (KG6WXC, KM6RSS ?) Dave AI6VX ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Keith Elliott W6KME <Keith(a)w6kme.org> Date: Thu, Oct 27, 2022 at 12:19 PM Subject: [K6MEP] µField Day this Saturday! Last chance reminder for the BORED Net µField Day this Saturday, with the Ventura County Amateur Radio Club at their home stomping grounds at the Dudley House! As usual, we'll go from about 11:00 to 3:00 pm. Some people may come earlier or later; some people may stay earlier or later. It's always very informal. Bring your portable HF setup, bring a handheld, bring your home station and see how hard it is to set it up remotely, whatever you feel like. The main goal is to hang around with other hams. This is the third time the BORED net has held a µFD with a host club, and it's always been a good way to meet people from other parts of the county and other clubs. Dave Schmidt AI6VX from VCARC will be providing charcoal and firing up the awesome barbecue pit. Bring something to cook up if you like. Bring your own drinks as well. The Dudley House offers 120v power and restrooms, plus a large lawn area and covered patio. This is definitely going to be the most luxurious µFD yet... Dudley House is at 197 N. Ashwood Avenue, on the SW corner of Ashwood and Loma Vista. The best parking will be in the medical plaza next door, which is accessed via Loma Vista. The Entrance to that lot is at 34.277760893173294, -119.24104931794436. What3words is hesitate.margin.singles. (What3words now works on any cell phone without needing the internet to find a location, by the way.) If we all park at the Med plaza, there is more parking lot available at Dudley House for those who need a paved area to set up, and for people with difficulty walking. The lots are adjacent, with a 4 foot flat planter between them. Enter where the pink arrow is. Dudley House is circled in yellow. If you have other questions email me at keith(a)w6kme.org. _._,_._,_
