The next southern California on-foot radio direction finding session
will take place Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Bonelli Regional Park. It
is intended for both beginner and intermediate level transmitter
hunters. A ham radio license and/or knowledge of radio equipment are
not requirements. Try your hand at some easy two-meter transmitters set
by Joe Moell K0OV plus a 5-fox two-meter international-rules course of
moderate difficulty set by Scott Moore KF6IKO. A transmitter on the
80-meter band may also be set up to try.
Participating in this session will be the GOTAhams and the Tri-County
Amateur Radio Association. They will provide a barbecue lunch for all
transmitter hunters.
If you have receivers, scanners, directional antennas, attenuators, or
other equipment suitable for on-foot RDF, be sure to bring it. Make
sure all batteries are fresh. A limited amount of RDF gear will be
available for loan.
For those who want to build RDF gear for use with their own two-meter
hand-held radios or scanners, Marvin Johnston KE6HTS will bring kits for
measuring-tape yagis and active attenuator circuit boards. He also has
complete antenna/attenuator kit that includes the power switch, BNC
connector, housing and battery, ready to install as the tape measure
beam is built. There will be tools and soldering stations for building.
If you're not an electronic technician, don't worry because there will
be experts to help you. Send e-mail to Marvin (marvin(a)west.net) to
pre-register and get more information about equipment. The building
session will only take place if there are sufficient advance
registrations. If you already have equipment and just want to hunt
transmitters, you don't need to pre-register.
If it takes place, the building session will start at 9:30 AM. Please
be prompt. Beginner transmitters will be on the air at that time. The
main 5-fox hunt will start about 10:30 AM. Hunters may start the
advanced course at any time until 12 noon. Courses close at 3 PM.
For the advanced 2-meter course, electronic scoring will be used. If
you have an "e-stick," be sure to bring it. A $5 donation is requested
for the advanced course to cover expenses related to e-punch equipment
and maps. The beginner course and the 80-meter transmitter hunt are
free of charge and e-punch is not required for them.
Trails are primitive in some areas of the park, so wear sturdy shoes.
All ages are welcome, but young children must be accompanied by an adult
at all times.
Bonelli Regional Park is near Raging Waters, Brackett Field, and
Puddingstone Reservoir. From the 57 freeway north of I-10, take the Via
Verde exit and go east through the entrance to the park. There is a
per-vehicle entry fee. Go approximately 1/4 mile beyond the entrance
and turn left into the parking lot for the former Snack Shoppe and bike
rental stand. Look for the orange-and-white orienteering flag directing
you to the starting area. Talk-in is on 146.97 MHz simplex. A map to
get you to the park is at www.homingin.com.

The Telecommunications Services Committee is aware that the AllStarLink node along with the links to repeaters on the SBARC Hub (Santa Ynez Peak, Diablo Peak) are down. We are hoping to restore the network as soon as possible.

This month, The Spectrum Monitor (TSM) magazine is reporting on changes to the County of Santa Barbara’s radio system which include a migration to $50 million P25 digital in the near future. From the article (attached):
"Most county agencies are expected to move from the old UHF analog systems to the new digital P25 network, including law enforcement, public works crews and parks departments. However, the County Fire Department would prefer upgraded VHF radios so that firefighters can communicate directly with mutual aid partners like Cal Fire, which have not upgraded their radios. The Santa Barbara Fire Department also operates an analog radio system that is not compliant with P25.”
I really enjoy my subscription to TSM. It is a monthly PDF magazine delivered without DRM or any other encryption so I can read it on any device. They have great articles about not only scanning and monitoring but also amateur radio and electronics. It rivals QST and CQ for interesting ham content.

I have heard similar things about the two-section, dual-band Diamond antenna as well. I think people are not assembling them correctly. There is a gasket that must be properly seated before tightening the metal connector. If it is not done properly, it will leak. That said, I have used both the Diamond and the Tram and had no issues with either in rainstorms.

You should speak with Dick, KN6AA, if you are interested in the Tram. I
recall that he has told a story whereby he was recommending a 2M (/440?)

mitigation, as I recall. I don't want to spread rumors, so check with him
- maybe a different model - maybe they have mitigated this - maybe a weep

buying one of those and find out what his experience was.
He runs a net on 147.000 (WB6OBB) Monday's at 6:55PM and he wanders into

Looks like the new $35 application fee won't be coming any time soon. The
latest word is that the FCC won't implement the charge until 2022. Once
it's effective, it will apply to new, modification (upgrade and sequential
call sign change), renewal, and vanity call sign applications.
Administrative updates (change a licensee's name, mailing, or email
address) will be exempt from fees.
For new licensees and upgrades, billing will be done by the FCC by email
after it receives the score from the VE team and before the upgrade is
issued.
I know many hams and organizations have bemoaned this fee but one potential
upshot is the reduction of call sign squatters who change their call signs
on a weekly or monthly basis in order to tie up call signs for years.

I noticed last evening and it’s still the case that FlightAware is blank over Afghanistan. Sorry, I meant to add FlightRadar24 also to the list of apps that are blank with reference to flights over Afghanistan.

Coordinator (EMCOR) Carlos Alberto Santamaría González, CO2JC.
According to preliminary information from the *United States Geological
Survey* <https://earthquake.usgs.gov> (USGS), a 7.2 magnitude earthquake
struck Haiti on August 14, 2021 at 1229 UTC, about 12 kilometers northeast
of Saint-Louis-du-Sud and 33 kilometers to the east-northeast of Les Cayes,
Haiti; 18.352 degrees north and 73.4801 degrees west at a depth of 10 km.
Mr. Jean-Robert Gaillard, HH2JR, President of the Radio Club of Haiti,
reported significant structural damage.
International news reports fear high casualties.
