You should also have someone at Carpinteria State Beach from 7:15AM to 5:00PM (obviously, that should be 2 shifts). We're having a meeting of all volunteers on Thurs, May 1, at 6:15PM, at Comfort Suites Motel at 5606 Carp. Ave in Carp. It'd be a good idea if one of your folks could attend to hash out any last minute glitches/details with the Ventura folks. NEWS RELEASE: 2003-055 April 21, 2003 JPL OPEN HOUSE TO TAKE VISITORS TO THE PLANETS AND BEYOND NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., will hold an open house on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., taking visitors on a virtual ride through the solar system with this year's theme, "Journey To The Planets and Beyond." This fun-filled, family event has a little of everything for space enthusiasts and non-space buffs, from virtual hang gliding lessons to a chance to build your own spacecraft and have your picture taken in infrared light. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet with scientists and engineers, who will staff booths to answer questions about current and future missions. Structured around the themes of technology, Earth, Mars, solar system, and the universe, visitors will see and learn more about how missions come together. Watch student-built robots compete, or see an android head and robotic arm come to life. Learn about the devices scientists use to explore our planet, from the ground below to the outer reaches of Earth's atmosphere. Greetings All, We're looking for operators the annual Tour de Cure bike ride. This year, it's been moved from the third Sunday in May to the first Saturday in May. This multi-course ride originates from Carpinteria State Beach and ranges from Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara to Channel View Park in Oxnard, by way of Ojai. Upcoming ARDF activities

This was posted to the ardr-socal listserver. ********** There's lots of great on-foot foxhunting action coming up in the next few months. It starts next Sunday (April 27) with a challenging event in Joe Grant Park, east of San Jose. World Championships competitors Bob Cooley KF6VSE and Marvin Johnston KE6HTS are putting it on, and they're expecting participation from both northern and southern California radio-orienteers. The details, plus a map and directions, are available by pointing your browser to www.homingin.com Then on May 10-11, it's the CQ Magazine National Foxhunting Weekend. We'll be joining clubs around the country by having a free on-foot hunt in Tri-City Park on Saturday, May 10. It's part of the almost-annual Antennas In The Park picnic and operating event, sponosored by Fullerton Radio Club and Western Amateur Radio Association. Mark your calendar and watch for more details as the date approaches. In June (exact date to be announced), we'll have a challenging southern California radio-orienteering event in a big park for both beginners and experts, as hams across the country train for the USA ARDF Championships in Cincinnati from July 31 through August 3. Read more about the championships at www.ardfusa.com Then in September, it's the annual ARRL Southwestern Division convention, which can always be counted on to provide transmitter-hunting-for-dollars opportunities. We will meet at 5:30 PM at Cody's (in the shopping center at corner of Turnpike Rd and Hollister Ave.) Rob's topic will be the ARRL Code Proficiency Certification Program; Rob maintains a 40 WPM code proficiency! Rob is also our ARRL Section Manager, and this will also be a good opportunity to talk to him about any questions or concerns about the ARRL or the SB Section.

Bernie's Memorial -

Hi Folks . I guess my first email sounded like I was bashing those of you that didn't show up for Bernie's service. For that I apologize! It was that Bernie's was the last of the two that I have attended lately and each time I was surprised that not more of us were there. Please, I know that some of you had things to do or couldn't get there for good reasons. I guess I was thinking out loud and I get in trouble when I do that - sometimes! Actually, those of you that have responded have been very polite and offered your reasons why you could not attend. Of that - I am not surprised. SBARC folks are a Class Act! But please! ..there is no need to tell me why you couldn't make it. The service was well attended and Bernie's family was very moved by the turn out. Hi All - I attended Bernie's memorial service this afternoon. Knowing him even for as short a time as I did it was obvious to me that he would have had a lot of friends, and indeed he does. The service was held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran church on North Fairview Avenue and was well attended. The minister spoke of the wonder of death! As Cain was standing over Abel's body, he must have been amazed and full of wonder! It was the very first death - until then no one had ever died. The minister also spoke of the wonder of death as such an unknown to us all. The wonder of life after death - what will that be like? The wonder of Christ dying on the cross to secure our place in that heaven! As I sat there I was full of wonder, too; I wondered why I was the only SBARC member there! 73 de Denny AD6EZ<>< PS - Come to think of it, where were all of Dick Johnson's friends when his memorial service was held at the Elks Lodge in Goleta? There was only a hand full of SBARC member's there.
