Friday Night Speaker Dinner

Hi everyone! Our speaker for the SBARC meeting on Friday night will be Art Goddard, W6XD, and he will be speaking on the TK4Z Story, a DXpedition to Corsica. We will be having dinner with Art at Cody's Restaurant at 5:30PM, and it is open to anyone who would like to come. My only request is that you let me know if you will be there so I can make reservations if necessary. ---Engineer's recipe for chocolate-chip cookies: 1.) 532.35 cm3 gluten 2.) 4.9 cm3 NaHCO3 3.) 4.9 cm3 refined halite 4.) 236.6 cm3 partially hydrogenated tallow triglyceride 5.) 177.45 cm3 crystalline C12H22O11 6.) 177.45 cm3 unrefined C12H22O11 7.) 4.9 cm3 methyl ether of protocatechuic aldehyde 8.) Two calcium carbonate-encapsulated avian albumen-coated protein 9.) 473.2 cm3 theobroma cacao 10.) 236.6 cm3 de-encapsulated legume meats (sieve size #10) Directions: To a 2-L jacketed round reactor vessel (reactor #1) with an overall heat transfer coefficient of about 100 Btu/F-ft2-hr, add ingredients one, two and three with constant agitation. In a second 2-L reactor vessel with a radial flow impeller operating at 100 rpm, add ingredients four, five, six, and seven until the mixture is homogenous. To reactor #2, add ingredient eight, followed by three equal volumes of the homogenous mixture in reactor #1. Additionally, add ingredient nine and ten slowly, with constant agitation. Care must be taken at this point in the reaction to control any temperature rise that may be the result of an exothermic reaction. Using a screw extruder attached to a #4 nodulizer, place the mixture piece-meal on a 316SS sheet (300 x 600 mm). Heat in a 460K oven for a period of time that is in agreement with Frank & Johnston's first order rate expression (see JACOS, 21, 55), or until golden brown. ADRF or Radio-O @ Joe Grant Results

Well, as the description tells, the van transmission died just north of Paso Robles. I called Dean about 8:30PM to let him know what was going on (he was already in San Jose), and he headed back down south for the 2+ hours drive to pick up the transmitters. Because I didn't know what exit we were parked in, we used simplex when he got close, and the signal strength verified when he was getting close! He arrived about 11:15PM, picked up Bill Smathers and the transmitters, and headed back up north. MANY thanks to Dean for doing this as it allowed the hunt to proceed (almost) as planned! The transmission would still engage in first gear as long as I didn't exceed about 35 MPH, so I limped home after Dean left at about 30 MPH driving the rest of Saturday night to return to SB. To complete this exciting weekend, I ran out of gas on San Marcos Pass just south of the Trout Club. Hiroshi was Japan National ARDF Champion several years ago, and I believe his wife did the same (although I don't see where she competed.) In talking to Dean, it sounded like there were quite a few reflections due to the damp weather up there to add to the challenge. And no, I didn't plan for the transmission to give out so Jay would stand a chance of winning :). Congratulations to Jay for a job well done!!! I believe this was his first ARDF meet using standard orienteering maps! Dean Dods stayed up late driving down to rescue the transmitters so that we could have a meet. Jay won using the blue magic receiver from OZ and a log periodic array. Penny turned in an amazingly good performance for a first timer, who had had about 6.5 minutes of instruction before she went out. She borrowed Jay's rig. This multi-course ride originates from Carpinteria State Beach and ranges from Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara to Channel View Park in Oxnard, by way of Ojai. Upcoming ARDF activities

This was posted to the ardr-socal listserver. ********** There's lots of great on-foot foxhunting action coming up in the next few months. It starts next Sunday (April 27) with a challenging event in Joe Grant Park, east of San Jose. World Championships competitors Bob Cooley KF6VSE and Marvin Johnston KE6HTS are putting it on, and they're expecting participation from both northern and southern California radio-orienteers. The details, plus a map and directions, are available by pointing your browser to www.homingin.com Then on May 10-11, it's the CQ Magazine National Foxhunting Weekend. We'll be joining clubs around the country by having a free on-foot hunt in Tri-City Park on Saturday, May 10. It's part of the almost-annual Antennas In The Park picnic and operating event, sponosored by Fullerton Radio Club and Western Amateur Radio Association. Mark your calendar and watch for more details as the date approaches. In June (exact date to be announced), we'll have a challenging southern California radio-orienteering event in a big park for both beginners and experts, as hams across the country train for the USA ARDF Championships in Cincinnati from July 31 through August 3. Read more about the championships at www.ardfusa.com Then in September, it's the annual ARRL Southwestern Division convention, which can always be counted on to provide transmitter-hunting-for-dollars opportunities.
