Marvin, KE6HTS *************** The ARRL Letter Vol. 23, No. 20 May 14, 2004 *************** ==>USA ARDF CHAMPIONSHIPS COMING TO CALIFORNIA IN MID-JUNE Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF) enthusiasts across the US are gearing up for the fourth annual national ARDF Championships next month. ARRL ARDF Coordinator Joe Moell, K0OV, says, the sport--also known as radio-orienteering or foxtailing--is an all-on-foot "adventure in the woods" to see who can track down and find the most hidden transmitters in the shortest time. The Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club (SBARC) <http://www.sbarc.org> will host the competition. Radio-orienteers from all over the country plus visitors from abroad are expected to attend. Moell anticipates a mix of experts and newcomers who aspire to be future champions. He says equipment need not be elaborate or expensive. "Most beginners do very well by augmenting their handheld VHF transceivers with simple Yagi antennas made out of a steel measuring tape and PVC pipe from the hardware store," he said. For "closing in," he says an offset RF attenuator consisting of some $15 worth of small parts will knock down the signal and keep the receiver's S-meter within its scale. "Plans are on the Web <http://members.aol.com/joek0ov/offatten.html>, and kits are available, so warm up your soldering iron," he adds. The ARDF competitive courses are open to anyone of any age and at any foxhunting skill level. No Amateur Radio license is needed. Medals in the event will be awarded in five age categories for males and four for females, in accordance with International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) rules <http://members.aol.com/homingin/intlfox.html#rules>. Heading up the USA ARDF Championships is Marvin Johnston, KE6HTS, a medalist at the last two USA ARDF Championships. An optional training camp with map-and-compass orienteering kicks off the ARDF action June 12-13. The main program gets under way Wednesday, June 16. The 2-meter competition takes place Friday, June 18. The 80-meter competition is the next day. The California events end just in time for final selection of ARDF Team USA 2004 members, who will travel to the Czech Republic for the 12th ARDF World Championships September 7-12. More than 200 participants representing two dozen or more countries are expected to turn out for the event. Moell says Team USA's positions will be filled based on performances in this year's national championships in California and in last year's national championships in Ohio. ARDF Practice Saturday

Just a heads up; those of us active in ARDF are finally in town this weekend for the ARDF practice at Lake Los Carnaros. The time is 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM or until everyone has found the transmitters and returned to the finish. Depending on what people want to do, we sometimes head over to Rusty's for a pizza afterwards. I will be setting out the transmitters so the others can practice for the US ARDF Championships. This will be a 2M hunt with perhaps one 80M transmitter set out so people can test out their equipment and/or find out what it is like to hunt on 80M. If you need to borrow equipment, let me know. All you will basically need is an HT since we have a number of 2M Tape Measure Beam antennas as well as some offset attenuators. If your HT doesn't have a BNC connector, you will need to bring along an adapter. And on the subject of the US ARDF Championships, I *really* need some more help. The championships will be from Wednesday, June 16 through Saturday, June 19. If you can help the entire event or just a day or two, please get in contact with me. Thanks! Marvin, KE6HTS

Amateur Television Weed Abatement

This Saturday morning, May 8th, we will conduct our annual weed abatement at the WB9KMO Amateur TV Repeater site (KTYD Transmitter site) at 3130 Gibraltar Road. The repeater is owned and operated by the Amateur Television Network (ATN). SBARC members are welcome and have been very helpful in the past, even though this is not an SBARC activity. It's a great way to show your support for SBARC's ATV Special Inerest Group. Please tell your friends who may not receive this message. The more help we get, the quicker we finish. If you're available and would like to help out, please contact me for details. We start early to keep cool. Typically, we work from about 8am to noon, but you are welcome any time that works for you. 4th US ARDF Championships Update #1

4th US ARDF Championships Update #1 This year, the Fourth U.S. ARDF Championships will be held in Southern California, and is being sponsored by the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club and the Los Angeles Orienteering Club. with the headquarters at the EconoLodge in Gorman, California (about 35 miles north of Los Angeles on I-5.) The registration form (PDF file) is now available for download on both the SBARC web site and the HomingIn web site. Registration will cover only the costs of the competition (permits, awards, bus, etc.) with meals and lodging being the responsibility of the competitor with the exception of the awards banquet Saturday night. A block of rooms has been reserved at the EconoLodge in Gorman for those of you who would like to stay at the headquarters location. There are also a number of campgrounds located within a 20 mile or so radius. As was done at the 2002 ARDF Championships in Georgia, we are making the venues public information. The venues that were chosen have excellent orienteering maps and will provide challenging courses. The reason for making the maps public information is these venues have been visited a number of times by California competitors and this is a way to even things out. The start/finish locations will not be public information. To encourage early registration, preview maps of the venues will be included if the registration is postmarked by May 14, 2004. After that, they will cost $5.00 for the pair including mailing. The 2M competition will be held at Vasquez Rocks on Friday, April 18, in Agua Dulce California. Because it can get quite hot, we plan on starting the competition at 8:30AM so most people can finish before the heat gets to be too much in the afternoon. In addition, we will have water at each of the controls. This is also a very scenic area and many movies have been partially filmed there including Star Trek and The Flintstones. The 80M competition will be held on Saturday, April 19, at Mt Pinos. Mt Pinos is situated at about 8000 feet in pine forest type terrain. This is one of the nicest venues in Southern California for this type of activity. Because of limited parking and to keep competitors together for the start of the competition, everyone will meet at Gorman and take the bus to the competition area. How to handle lunch has not been decided as of yet since it is not included in the registration. We are currently looking into a low cost ($5.00 or less) Santa Barbara Style Tri-Tip BBQ (tri-tips, beans, salad, garlic bread, drinks) after the 2M competition. We plan on having a training camp from Saturday, June 12 through Wednesday, June 16, available for any of the competitors who care to participate. The most probable venue will be the Travel Town section of Griffith Park in Los Angeles. This will provide a challenge both physically and with 2M reflections. More information will be on the web site as it becomes available. ATV Net - Tuesday Night at 7:30pm

ATVSIG'ers, The turnout for the ATV Net has been light for the past few weeks, but I attribute that to the TV Repeater being down for reconstruction. We expect to have it on the air again with the SSTV repeater, too, in a few more weeks. More about that in the near future. I will not be able to run the ATV Net on Tuesday nights until sometime in June due to a clash in my schedule. If someone would volunteer, I'd like to see continuity in ATV/SSTV activity during that period. I look forward to returning as soon as I can, hopefully in a big way. Thank you for your support.
