SBARC General Upgrade Class

The Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club will sponsor a General Upgrade Class. The class consists of three Thursday Evening sessions starting August 26 from 7 to 9 PM. The location is County Health Services, 300 North San Antonio Road. This class is intended for hams that have a Technician License that want to upgrade to General. The class will focus mainly on the General Written Exam but will have some discussion on techniques that students can use to learn 5 words per minute code. The class is free and is open to all hams. An entry level Technician Class will start October 12 and consists of five Tuesday evening sessions from 6:30 to 9 PM at the same location. 446.400/IRLP notes

I added a 2nd courtesy tone when IRLP is on. The controller gives the standard hi-lo tone just before unkeying the transmitter. In addition, there now is a hi-hi-lo tone when the incoming IRLP "receiver" drops. So when IRLP "unkeys" you will hear hi-hi-lo + hi-lo. There's probably a cleaner way to do this, but this seems to work. Let me know if I should take it out again. I'm planning to install javAPRSSrv next on the same computer to connect to the existing APRS radio and act as an internet gateway. Right now I'm just having a little bit of a hard time getting hold of the software, it's "send me email and I'll send it to you" software. Can't just download it. Grrrr. Thorsten - KG6VRT

Greetings All, Ventura County ARES/RACES has an upcoming bike event on Sat., August 21st and asked if SBARC could help with it. 5 to 6 Santa Barbara area operators will probably be needed. Here's a bit of info on the bike ride: The Channel Islands Bicycle Club(CIBC) and the Kiwanis Club of Ventura sponsor a recreational bicycle ride to raise funds for their respective clubs. Both groups are non-profit entities and all persons are volunteers. This year we expect up to 1500 riders and this is not a race. CIBC grants monies to bicycling advocacy groups such as the California Bicycle Coalition, Ventura Bicycle Coalition, Mission with Bikes, and is actively working with local government to improve riding conditions within the county of Ventura . Grants have also gone to the local Boys and Girls Club and the Boy Scouts. The Kiwanis Club of Ventura is active in promoting the welfare of the local youth through various programs like K-Kids Clubs at Sheridan Way and Pierpont Elementary Schools. Proceeds also fund an annual Christmas party for Ventura Unified's Special Education classes; Law Day-an annual event recognizing law enforcement officers of the year from agencies in Ventura County; and Fire Service and Heroes Day-an annual event recognizing fire fighters of the year and citizen heroes. Our ride starts and finishes at the Four Points Sheraton in Ventura and has four routes of varying lengths. The Double Metric is the only route that is significantly different than the other three. The Mini Metric, Metric Century and Century Montecito. The Double Metric Century goes on the bike path toward Lake Casitas and over Casitas Pass and joins the Century ride at Montecito. Both the Century and Double Metric Century follow the same route west up East Mountain Drive and Cathedral Oaks to Stowe Grove Park in Goleta. The return toward Ventura is through Hope Ranch, Cabrillo Blvd., then to Carpinteria and back down old PCH. Statistic are on our side. The last hurricane to hit was in 1962 and it was a CAT 2 only. No damage here in Jacksonville (3-hrs. from Orlando). Thanks for your prayers. :-) neil "Darryl A. I received the following notice about one of the IRLP reflectors being used for emergency Hurricane Charley traffic. I connected to it, and listened to the network traffic. The node is 9210. You'll need to wait between transmissions before dropping the link with "73". IRLP is up on K6TZ 440

Thanks to W1UUQ, AE6QC and KG6VRT we now have a functional IRLP node on 440. The repeater is on 446.400, down 5 MHz, 131.8 tone. We are node 3673. To connect to another node just key in the node number with touchtone. To disconnect, send "73". A list of nodes can be found online at http://status.irlp.net/ You can only connect to an idle node. SBARC- September 17, 2004 Meet "Mr. ICOM" Tokuzo Inoue - JA3FA By Sam Vigil WA6NGH On a recent business trip to Japan, Sam Vigil, WA6NGH, visited ICOM Headquarters in Osaka, Japan and interviewed Tokuzo Inoue, Founder and President of ICOM. He also visited and photographed one of ICOMs factories. The talk will also include a glimpse of Japans famous bullet trains and other high technology wonders. The full text of the CQ article that WA6NGH wrote on the interview is on the ICOM website: http://www.icom.co.jp/world/info/p-interview/ Sam Vigil, WA6NGH, was first licensed as a Novice in 1961. His first rig was a Knight-Kit Receiver and 50W CW transceiver. He joined the Navy Reserve in 1966 and served 3 years as a Cryptologic Technician Third Class and then 4 years active duty as a Cryptologic Officer in Washington, DC and Puerto Rico. He served an additional 22 years in the Naval Reserve and retired as a Commander in 1995. He spent much of his Naval Reserve career based at the Santa Barbara Reserve Center. He is active on 40 M SSB and 2M VHF. His rigs include a Collins KWM-1 and an ICOM 706 MKII. He is also interested in ARDF and was a participant in the 2004 US ARDF Championship. He has written nine ham radio articles for CQ, CQ VHF, QST, and World Radio magazines. In "real life" he is a Professor of Environmental Engineering at Cal Poly. He is also a member of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Search and Rescue Unit and is certified as an Emergency Medical Technician.

Hamfest Setup

Hi everyone, Tomorrow morning (Saturday) we will be meeting at the Elks grove (150 N. Kellogg Ave) to set things up for hamfest. We need to setup the canapies, put up tables, and do some cleaning.
