I'd like to note that Darryl Widman, KF6DI, was the person who got this started initially with a talk to Art Goddard, W6XD, up at the Santa Maria Swapfest. It is nice to see this taking off!!! Nobody that comes out of school knows anything, let alone everything. And like a lot of things in life Amateur Radio is a lot of OJT. We read a book, memorize some formulas, study some questions and get a license. Now what? Now we need someone to show us the ropes. This someone is going to take us under their wing and provide us with some guidance and inspiration and allow us to grow and enjoy the hobby. That person is our mentor. The biggest reason that most new hams never become active is because they didnt get any support from a local club or help from a mentor. Take a few minutes to think about when you were first licensed and who the person was that helped you. It may have been your dad or a family friend or a neighbor, but one thing is for sure and that is you did not get smart by yourself. Now take another moment and think of the last person that you offered help to. Hopefully that person came to mind quickly. We have been highlighting some of the great things that the clubs have been doing with new hams. I have to tell you that there really are some super programs working out there. We want to share this information with all of the clubs in the hope that they will be able to take a piece of a successful program and make it work for their members. Sharing ideas makes us better. If you have any successes from your club that you would like to share, please send the information to: clubs(a)arrl.org Time For Class Ham radio class, that is. Now is the time that your club should be organizing and advertising Amateur radio licensing classes for this fall season. Vacations are winding down and people will be looking for things to keep themselves busy. With all of the publicity about ham radio during the recent disasters people have seen the importance that the Amateur Radio Service has in their community. Now you can let them know that they too can obtain an FCC license and be trained to help their neighbor should an emergency occur. The club will be using the callsign K4AF and intends a 24 hour operation on 20m, 40m & 80m. There will be a special QSL available for stations that work K4AF. Members of PARC include civilian employees of the Pentagon as well as personnel from all branches of the military. IRLP greeting set-up

I set-up two node greetings for our IRLP node. The wave files were provided by Joanne, but unfortunately the conversion to 8 khz/ 8b-bit audio introduced some artifacts. It'll work for now. It will take two hours for the greetings to propagate to all other nodes that are up (these things are apparently played locally). Ideally we should have greetings that include "K6TZ"... ("Welcome to sunny Santa Barbara from K6TZ, node 3672" and "Good bye from ...") perhaps?) TvE - N6TVE

irlp monitor codes

i noticed that some other nodes have internal codes to do things like checking current link status, time of day, other things like this. do we have the same thing and if so what are those codes and things that are monitored. steve

SBARC General Upgrade Class

The Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club will sponsor a General Upgrade Class. The class consists of three Thursday Evening sessions starting August 26 from 7 to 9 PM. The location is County Health Services, 300 North San Antonio Road. This class is intended for hams that have a Technician License that want to upgrade to General. The class will focus mainly on the General Written Exam but will have some discussion on techniques that students can use to learn 5 words per minute code. The class is free and is open to all hams. An entry level Technician Class will start October 12 and consists of five Tuesday evening sessions from 6:30 to 9 PM at the same location. If you know of anyone that may be interested in either class, please forward this message. 446.400/IRLP notes

I added a 2nd courtesy tone when IRLP is on. The controller gives the standard hi-lo tone just before unkeying the transmitter. In addition, there now is a hi-hi-lo tone when the incoming IRLP "receiver" drops. So when IRLP "unkeys" you will hear hi-hi-lo + hi-lo. There's probably a cleaner way to do this, but this seems to work. Let me know if I should take it out again. I'm planning to install javAPRSSrv next on the same computer to connect to the existing APRS radio and act as an internet gateway. Right now I'm just having a little bit of a hard time getting hold of the software, it's "send me email and I'll send it to you" software. Can't just download it. Grrrr. Thorsten - KG6VRT

Greetings All, Ventura County ARES/RACES has an upcoming bike event on Sat., August 21st and asked if SBARC could help with it. 5 to 6 Santa Barbara area operators will probably be needed. Here's a bit of info on the bike ride: The Channel Islands Bicycle Club(CIBC) and the Kiwanis Club of Ventura sponsor a recreational bicycle ride to raise funds for their respective clubs. Both groups are non-profit entities and all persons are volunteers. This year we expect up to 1500 riders and this is not a race. CIBC grants monies to bicycling advocacy groups such as the California Bicycle Coalition, Ventura Bicycle Coalition, Mission with Bikes, and is actively working with local government to improve riding conditions within the county of Ventura . Grants have also gone to the local Boys and Girls Club and the Boy Scouts. The Kiwanis Club of Ventura is active in promoting the welfare of the local youth through various programs like K-Kids Clubs at Sheridan Way and Pierpont Elementary Schools. Proceeds also fund an annual Christmas party for Ventura Unified's Special Education classes; Law Day-an annual event recognizing law enforcement officers of the year from agencies in Ventura County; and Fire Service and Heroes Day-an annual event recognizing fire fighters of the year and citizen heroes. Our ride starts and finishes at the Four Points Sheraton in Ventura and has four routes of varying lengths. The Double Metric is the only route that is significantly different than the other three. The Mini Metric, Metric Century and Century Montecito. The Double Metric Century goes on the bike path toward Lake Casitas and over Casitas Pass and joins the Century ride at Montecito. Both the Century and Double Metric Century follow the same route west up East Mountain Drive and Cathedral Oaks to Stowe Grove Park in Goleta. The return toward Ventura is through Hope Ranch, Cabrillo Blvd., then to Carpinteria and back down old PCH. Statistic are on our side. The last hurricane to hit was in 1962 and it was a CAT 2 only. No damage here in Jacksonville (3-hrs. from Orlando). Thanks for your prayers. :-) neil "Darryl A.
