FYI: California to Install Wi-Fi Access in State Parks

I saw the following in the reuters tech news: California to Install Wi-Fi Access in State Parks SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Californians, known for their love for the great outdoors and for high technology, will soon be able to enjoy both at the same time as state parks get Wi-Fi Internet access. California State Parks officials said on Friday that SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE:SBC <http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/finance/nm/wr_nm/storytext/tech_california…> - news <http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/biz/nm/wr_nm/storytext/tech_california_wif…>) would install Wi-Fi links in 85 state parks over the next six months. Increasing numbers of laptop computers and handheld devices can connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi signals. The expansion into the state's vast park system marks the latest spread of Wi-Fi service into open spaces, which already includes the San Francisco Giants' baseball stadium and downtown San Jose, at the heart of Silicon Valley. San Elijo State Beach near San Diego is the first state park to receive Wi-Fi access, which could, for example, enable surfers to send up-to-date pictures and information about the waves. Internet access will work in only a small fraction of the overall park terrain, mostly around visitor centers and camping areas, said California State Parks spokesman Roy Stearns. Hiking trails would not be covered, he said. Laptop computer users need a Wi-Fi card to get access to high-speed Internet access and, if they are not SBC customers, they will have to pay $7.95 a day for the service. SBC will share some of that revenue with the state of California, an SBC spokesman said.

unusual U=bolt size

The rain stopped, the sun came out, and I went to work on the antennas that crashed last month. Just when I thought I had my antennas reconstructed....Murphy shows up. How does he always find me? I need to replace a 2-1/8 inch U bolt. The local hardware stores, including Home Depot, have 2 and 2-1/2 inch, but not 2-1/8. Does anybody have any suggestions? Please? MNI TNX & 73 de Paul, W1PR

Friday Night SBARC Meeting

Hi everyone, This Friday night will be the first club meeting of the new year. As most of you are aware, SBARC has a working IRLP node (3673) that was put into operation towards the end of 2004. Many people helped, but Thorsten Von Eicken, KG6VRT, was the person who finally got the software working and integrated with the hardware. This can be a tremdous communication tool since the SBARC 440 MHz repeater can now be reached from anywhere in the world that has an IRLP node. Our speaker this month will be Lonnie Bland, N6RBR. Lonnie has been working with IRLP and is the hardware person for the WALA net. Lonnie is *very* knowledgeable about how IRLP works and has given talks throughout Southern California. As an incentive to start using IRLP, our main door prize will be a new Alinco 440 HT with a touchtone pad. Also new with SBARC is an ENG (Electronic News Gathering) vehicle and you can see a description of the vehicle on Steve Hammer's website at http://k6sgh.com/ENG/eng.htm. It was picked up today and will be on display at the club meeting Friday night. When - Friday, January 21, 2005 Time - 7:30 PM (Doors open at 6:45!) Where - Goleta Union Schools Admin. Sunday at Santa Barbara City College

Hi folks, On Sunday, 16 January at 2 p.m. we're going to do a Human Flag at La Playa Stadium at Santa Barbara City College. Bring a White and a Red shirt, jacket, or sweatshirt. We'll be doing a Red Cross on a White background and a Red Heart on a White background. This is part of a fundraiser for the International Response Fund for Tsunami relief and for the Disaster Response Fund for the victims of flooding and landslides in California, Colorado, Ohio River etc. We need about 5000 people to pull this off, so please forward to as many folks as you can. If you would like to help volunteer to setup, you can get there at Noon. Thank you!
