dying monitor?

Is there any hope for a CRT monitor when it starts to smear? I'm using a 5 year old NEC MultiSync FE700 CRT flat screen, and have noticed that there is a smear of gray to the right of any black characters, such as a line of text. Degaussing did not help (nor did I expect it to but tried it anyway). Or is 5 years about what I should expect? Thanks for the anticipated sage advice. 73 de Paul

Frank Macado, W6MLX, passed away February 18th, 2005. Frank was a ham since 1935, and retired at the age of 80 as principle engineer of electronics of General Dynamics, Avionics Division. He was born in Santa Barbara, but lived in San Diego. He was 91 years old.

That's right, the ATV Net is back! My other interfering commitments are behind me now and I can jump back into this with both feet. We can do all of the neat things we used to do and more. ATV, SSTV, computers, gadgets, gizmos, history, and just about anything else that's related are fair game. You don't need to be involved in any of these things to participate. In fact, "lurkers" (those who only listen) are welcome, but we prefer you to jump in and talk with us. One new and interesting topic is WiFi. Do you wonder how it works? What does this have to do with Ham Radio? Why do Ham Radio operators have a big advantage over other users? What can we do with it? What is being planned? What is already operational? How easy is it to get on the air? If this is interesting to you, please check in this Tuesday night at 7:30pm on the 146.19/79 repeater. The theme is "Dream, Learn and Make It Happen!" SB rental housing

I am writing to ask if anyone knows of a house or condo we might be able to rent for the month of June. We would prefer SB, Carpinteria, Ventura, Goleta - but we are open. We have two weddings in Santa Barbara, one over Memorial weekend and the other on June 25th and we thought it would be fun to visit SB for the entire month of June. We are probably looking for a three bedroom, but could make due with two. It will be Tiffany, Sydney (now 3 yrs. old!) and myself, and we will have a 6-7 week old new baby with us! If anyone has any good connections with vacation rental places let us know as well. Thanks again for any help and hope to see some of you in June. SBARC Education Events

SBARC Members, This Monday, January 24, there will be a meeting of the SBARC Education Committee. It will be held at the Club Red Cross Station at 7:00 PM. The topic is developing the Education and Training Plan for 2005. All SBARC members and guests are welcome to attend this meeting. If you are not able to attend this meeting but have ideas or suggestions, please forward them to me and we will discuss them. Also, this Wednesday, January 26, we will start an Extra class. If you are General or Advanced and want to upgrade to Extra, you should attend this class. It will be held at County Health Services, 300 North San Antonio at 7:00 PM. FYI: California to Install Wi-Fi Access in State Parks

I saw the following in the reuters tech news: California to Install Wi-Fi Access in State Parks SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Californians, known for their love for the great outdoors and for high technology, will soon be able to enjoy both at the same time as state parks get Wi-Fi Internet access. California State Parks officials said on Friday that SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE:SBC <http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/finance/nm/wr_nm/storytext/tech_california…> - news <http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/biz/nm/wr_nm/storytext/tech_california_wif…>) would install Wi-Fi links in 85 state parks over the next six months. Increasing numbers of laptop computers and handheld devices can connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi signals. The expansion into the state's vast park system marks the latest spread of Wi-Fi service into open spaces, which already includes the San Francisco Giants' baseball stadium and downtown San Jose, at the heart of Silicon Valley. San Elijo State Beach near San Diego is the first state park to receive Wi-Fi access, which could, for example, enable surfers to send up-to-date pictures and information about the waves. Internet access will work in only a small fraction of the overall park terrain, mostly around visitor centers and camping areas, said California State Parks spokesman Roy Stearns. Hiking trails would not be covered, he said. Laptop computer users need a Wi-Fi card to get access to high-speed Internet access and, if they are not SBC customers, they will have to pay $7.95 a day for the service. SBC will share some of that revenue with the state of California, an SBC spokesman said.
