IRLP repeater fixes (446.400)

I hope to have fixed the following: - no more double ID announcements - shortened the ID announcement a tad - revert to CW ID if voice ID is keyed-over - issue forced ID as CW, not voice - ensured no ID is sent out IRLP With respect to the last problem, I was told that folks got complaints from remote IRLP sites that our controller was transmitting IDs on IRLP. This should definitely not occur! I could not reproduce the problem nor really tell how it could occur, so please let me know if anyone gets further complaints. Regards, Thorsten - N6TVE

Hello via the La Vigia TelPac node!

One .. small .. step .. at .. a .. time .. We finally have a Winlink TelPac node up at La Vigia Hill on 145.05. This is software that gateways between the RF side of the Winlink system and the Internet side. Unfortunately Bill and I discovered that the old packet hardware that was there had deteriorated badly, in particular the 438.950 9600baud radio seems to no longer function. So for now all we have is the single 1200baud 145.05 radio operational. If you want to try things out you need to install Paclink on your computer and set it up to connect to K6TZ-1 on 145.050. The best step-by-step instructions I have seen are at <http://www.ki5dr.com/images/wc-ares.ppt>. Let me know if you run into difficulties. The K6TZ-1 node sends out a beacon every minute to USERS, so bring up a monitor window as soon as you dial the frequency and you should be greeted with "K6TZ-1 Santa Barbara La Vigia Hill Winlink 2000 Telpac node". 73 Thorsten - N6TVE

Spectrum Analyzers

Hi, I'm finally finding a little time to work on my backlog of radio projects. What this means is that I am getting motivated to get an inexpensive spectrum analyzer. My budget is very low, but I've seen a few on eBay that I can probably afford. I know there's a lot of knowledge and experience out there, so hope you can give me some good advice. What should I consider and what should I stay away from? Are there any good deals you're aware of? Obviously, I want everything for almost nothing, but these are my requirements: 1. Coverage of ham bands from 2 Meters through 10 GHz 2. Usable frequency display, digital desired but not required (OSD or not, either is ok) 3. Stable and fully functional but not necessarily absolutely calibrated (I'm willing to use fudge factors for calibration errors as long as they're minor and predictable) 4. Display quality not noticeably degraded 5. Some type of computer/printer output desired, but not required 6. Tracking generator desired, but not required 7. Popular make and model so parts and information are readily available, newer is better 8. Capabilities and functionality are more important than cosmetics 9. Portability is desired, but not required 10. Price below $1000, preferably below $500 All help is appreciated, Rod, wb9kmo(a)sbarc.org

FYI: La Vigia packet node down

The packet node at La Vigia is currently down (since yesterday noon), this affects the 145.610, 223.680, and 438.950 frequencies there. Bill and I replaced the old PC controlling things by a Win98 box that will run TelPac (for Winlink). Unfortunately getting it to work with an old dual-TNC ISA card that has no documentation and an MFJ-1270+MFJ-9600 TNC for which I can't find much documentation either and whose RS-232 appears to be acting up is a little "interesting". I'll get there, but if anyone wonders why it down, this is it... Thorsten - N6TVE Note that the new system will use 145.050 instead of 145.610.

I still have one of those boxes. They are a little bigger than that cubic foot and weigh in at ~70Lbs. also They are fetching $5000 and up depending on the plug ins. To do what Rod wants to do you would need a display frame an IF plug in and probably 2 RF plug ins. It would go from HF to 18GHz. To get the most from them you need some additional boxes, like tracking oscillators or noise generators. There are now several do it all boxes from HP and Tek and probabaly some much less expensive stuff for the communications serviceman from outfits like Sencore. Good Luck Rod, but don't expect much for $500. There are now a lot of kits for many good devices around, it's just finding them that's hard.
