IRLP UP

TZ-446.400 IRLP should be up and running as of this morning would appreciate if people can use & abuse it a little, and let me know if there are any problems. Im specifically looking for feedbacks on audio level to/from the remote nodes, and audio quality. I have temporarily set low RF transmit timeout for inbound traffic from remote will fix it in a week or so. Also please help keep an ear on the 446.400 system to make sure it hasnt gone haywire. For those of you not familiar with IRLP, the 30-second usage tutorial (minus the rules/convention/etiquette blurbs) -- To connect to the remote node: 1. A new study conducted in South Korea suggests children who live close to an AM radio transmission tower may have an elevated risk of leukemia. According to Radio World, researchers found that children who lived within 2 kilometers of an AM radio transmitter were twice as likely to develop lymphocytic leukemia as children who lived more than 20 kilometers away. The study included 1,928 children with leukemia, 956 with brain cancer and 3,082 healthy children. The researchers took measurements of electric and magnetic fields surrounding AM transmission towers in various areas of South Korea. They then used a mathematical model to estimate residents' exposure to radiation from the towers. The findings were published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. -- Paul R. Reminder - Topanga ARDF this Saturday

The next southern California on-foot transmitter hunt will be Saturday, August 18, at Topanga State Park. This session is part of a series of local events leading up to the USA ARDF Championships that will take place near Lake Tahoe during September. As always, this session is open to anyone of any age, with or without a ham radio license. Experts will be on hand to teach you the basic techniques. If you are a beginner, there will be entry-level two-meter fox transmitters just for you, set by Joe Moell K0OV. For advanced radio-orienteers, there will be a 5-fox two-meter course approaching the length of a national championship course, set by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. One or more optional 80-meter fox transmitters may also be on the air. Transmitter hunting begins at 10 AM. You may start at any time up until noon. Courses close at 3 PM. A limited amount of radio direction finding gear will be available for loan. For the advanced 2-meter course, electronic scoring will be used. If you have an "e-stick," be sure to bring it. There is a $5 fee to cover expenses related to the use of Los Angeles Orienteering Club's e-punch equipment and maps. The beginner course and the 80-meter transmitter hunt are free of charge and e-punch is not required for them. Topanga State Park is in the Santa Monica Mountains. From Highway 101 in Woodland Hills, go south on Topanga Canyon Boulevard (Highway 27) about 8 miles. From Pacific Coast Highway, go north on Topanga Canyon Boulevard to just past Old Topanga Canyon Road. Either way, watch for a "Topanga State Park" sign and turn east onto Entrada Road. (This is a dangerous corner.) Go about a mile, bearing left at the fork. We will gather at the end of the parking lot in the shaded picnic area. Look for the orange and white orienteering flag. Talk-in will be on 146.97 MHz simplex. Vehicular entrance and parking costs $5 per vehicle. Special note: There is back-country camping in this park. MicroChip PIC courses

Hi everyone, I'm a relative newcomer to the PIC-EL group. My main interest is driven by Amateur Radio and a desire to use the PIC and PIC-EL as a teaching tool in my Electronics Technology course at the local High School (Santa Barbara, CA area). Tuesday I made the epic Trek to Orange County - Mission Viejo - to take the first two of the courses Microchip offers. Besides the courses I took ( 101 TLS, and 102 ASP ) _https://secure.microchip.com/RTC/index.aspx_ (https://secure.microchip.com/RTC/index.aspx) I opted to get the optional toolkit and development tools they offered. It was a thoroughly pleasurable training session and gave me a big jump start into the programming process. In addition to the great support I have received from Craig (AA0ZZ) with the PIC-EL Project (_http://home.comcast.net/~aa0zz/index.html_ (http://home.comcast.net/~aa0zz/index.html) ). The course was an individual training session and gave me an opportunity to ask lots of questions. An offshoot of the time I spent there was to ask if they (instructor, Rob Stranskey) would be interested in doing a day of courses in the Central coast area. (Total driving time through LA from Santa Barbara area - round trip under almost ideal driving conditions was 7 1/2 hours ). He said he would be comfortable with that idea if we could supply a classroom and some students. So, we're looking at some time late this year or early next year, say Dec'07 - April'08 give or take. If any of you might be interested on a Saturday session which could include 2 courses, let me know your course preference and I'll start a list of possible students. I'm pretty sure I can get together a dozen or so locally and maybe we can add another 20 from SFV and Ventura, San Luis Obispo Paso Robles etc. I'm sure you would find it an exciting experience. Does anyone know of a PIC User group on the North side of LA? I have to tell you, driving to Orange county from this area is an ordeal, so it'd be worth it for anyone within 100 miles of SBA. Usual cost for this sort of event is $49 a course. I'm Thinking of asking him as a guest speaker at the local radio club meeting (SBARC - _www.sbarc.org_ (http://www.sbarc.org) ) which would be a 3rd Friday of the month in evening, followed by classes the next day. A FREE E-WASTE RECYCLING EVENT

A FREE E-WASTE RECYCLING EVENT will take place at SBCC's West Campus Parking Lot, on Sunday, July 29, from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM, and Monday, July 30, from 12:00-5:00 PM. Any California resident, business, school, etc., is welcome to bring e-waste. Unwanted TV's, monitors, computers and other electronic equipment can all be recycled. Drop off is FREE. The event is sponsored by Electronic Waste Management, a state-approved e-waste collector.

Next on-foot hunt near Santa Barbara 8/11/07

Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta, CA will be the site of southern California's next international-style on-foot foxhunt on Saturday, August 11, 2007. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment are not required. Bring the kids and grandkids, then go out on the course with them! This event is being hosted by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. There will be five fox transmitters on 146.565 MHz FM with international-rules timing. The site area is slightly less than 140 acres. It is relatively flat, making it a good site for foxtailers of all skill levels. Full-color orienteering maps will be available. Some practice transmitters may also be on the air for you to find. The main 5-fox hunt begins at 10:30 AM. Hunters may start any time until 12:30 PM. Courses close at 2 PM. Electronic scoring will be used for the international-rules hunt. If you have an "e-stick," be sure to bring it. There is a $5 fee to cover expenses related to the use of Los Angeles Orienteering Club's e-punch equipment and maps. There will be no charge to hunt the beginner transmitters. Bring any 2-meter RDF "sniffing" gear you have. If you don't have any, just bring your handi-talkie or scanner. If you don't have that, come anyway, because a limited number of RDF sets will be available for loan. Also be sure to bring anything you'll need while going after those radio foxes, such as munchies, bottled water and sunscreen. Bring your own compass, protractor and pencil if you plan to use them for map marking. Make sure that all batteries are fresh. Meet at the Stow House Parking Lot just off of Los Carneros Road. >From US 101 about 8 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north about 1/4 mile and turn right into the parking lot. There should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white orienteering flag. A map to help you get to the site is at www.homingin.com Special note: The annual Santa Barbara Hamfest takes place on Sunday, the day after this ARDF event.
