Next on-foot hunt near Santa Barbara 8/11/07
by Marvin Johnston 27 Jul '07

27 Jul '07

Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta, CA will be the site of southern California's next international-style on-foot foxhunt on Saturday, August 11, 2007. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment are not required. Bring the kids and grandkids, then go out on the course with them! This event is being hosted by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. There will be five fox transmitters on 146.565 MHz FM with international-rules timing. The site area is slightly less than 140 acres. It is relatively flat, making it a good site for foxtailers of all skill levels. Full-color orienteering maps will be available. Some practice transmitters may also be on the air for you to find. The main 5-fox hunt begins at 10:30 AM. Hunters may start any time until 12:30 PM. Courses close at 2 PM. Electronic scoring will be used for the international-rules hunt. If you have an "e-stick," be sure to bring it. There is a $5 fee to cover expenses related to the use of Los Angeles Orienteering Club's e-punch equipment and maps. There will be no charge to hunt the beginner transmitters. Bring any 2-meter RDF "sniffing" gear you have. If you don't have any, just bring your handi-talkie or scanner. If you don't have that, come anyway, because a limited number of RDF sets will be available for loan. Also be sure to bring anything you'll need while going after those radio foxes, such as munchies, bottled water and sunscreen. Bring your own compass, protractor and pencil if you plan to use them for map marking. Make sure that all batteries are fresh. Meet at the Stow House Parking Lot just off of Los Carneros Road. >From US 101 about 8 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north about 1/4 mile and turn right into the parking lot. There should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white orienteering flag. A map to help you get to the site is at www.homingin.com Special note: The annual Santa Barbara Hamfest takes place on Sunday, the day after this ARDF event. There will be a flea market, exhibitors, demonstrations, VE testing and contests, including the famous transformer toss. Why not make a weekend of it? 73, Joe Moell K0OV USA ARDF Coordinator

Free 8-foot 2.4 GHz Antenna
by Rodney S Fritz 17 Jul '07

17 Jul '07

Greetings, I have an 8-foot grid dish with 2.4 GHz feed that needs a new home immediately, even if it's only temporary. This is a heavy duty aluminum (relatively light) commercial antenna, suitable for any mountaintop or QTH. For transport, the antenna breaks down to into two halves. Do you know someone who needs such a fine antenna? How about a place to store it until someone needs it? We would prefer for someone to pick it up in Santa Barbara, but if that's not possible we might be able to deliver it. The price is right: free if you pick it up or the cost of gas if we need to deliver out of the area. Please respond quickly. It needs a new home tomorrow! 73, WB9KMO Rod Fritz, 805-637-0985

Craig Park Transmitter Hunting 7/14/07
by Marvin Johnston 19 Jun '07

19 Jun '07

The next southern California on-foot direction-finding session will be Craig Regional Park on July 14, sponsored by the SuperSystem UHF Repeater Network with support from members of the Fullerton Radio Club. It is open to everyone. All ages are welcome, so bring the family. You don't need a ham radio license or knowledge of RDF equipment. For radio-orienteers of average experience, there will be a 5-fox two-meter course of low to moderate difficulty. If you are a beginner, there will be plenty of practice two-meter fox transmitters just for you. Transmitters on the 80-meter and UHF bands will also be available to hunt. Experts will be on hand to teach you the basic techniques of on-foot direction-finding. An optional cookout will take place just prior to the hunt with grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken breasts and all the fixings. If you bring a salad or dessert to share, your cost for the lunch will be $2. If not, the price is $5. If you plan to take part in this picnic, it would help if you would make an advance reservation by e-mail to <wa6twf(a)aol.com> and arrive at the starting point by 11 AM. If you don't wish to partake in the picnic, no reservation is necessary. Just bring your own lunch and come to the start point at 12 noon for the hunt. There is no charge for the transmitter hunting. A limited amount of radio direction finding gear will be available for loan. If possible, bring a handi-talkie, receiver, or scanner covering the two-meter band for each person who will be going ARDFing. If you have directional antennas, attenuators, or other on-foot RDF equipment, be sure to bring it. Make sure all batteries are fresh. Craig Regional Park is between the cities of Fullerton and Brea. It is bounded on the west by State College Boulevard, on the north by Imperial Highway, on the east by the 57 freeway and on the south by Bastanchury Road. See the maps at <www.homingin.com> for navigation to the park and the hunt start location. From the 57 freeway, take the Imperial Highway exit, go west to State College (first light), turn left (south) and look for the park on your left (east). This is the only vehicular entrance. Vehicular entry and parking within Craig Park costs $5 and there are parking spaces right next to the starting point, which is south and east of our previous location. As an alternate, you can park just outside along the State College Boulevard for free if you're willing to hike about 500 yards to the start. As you approach, look for the orange and white orienteering flag. Two meter talk-in is on K6QEH/R, 146.97(-) PL 136.5. SuperSystem members can call WA6TWF on "Channel 5." Questions about the hunt? Send e-mail to <k0ov(a)homingin.com> 73, Joe Moell K0OV

Father's Day gift for Hams
by auditron 09 Jun '07

09 Jun '07

The best Father's Day gift any dad can receive is a day in Santa Maria at the Santa Maria Radio Swapfest! ------------------------------- How Hams Celebrate Father's Day: President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday in 1924. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made Father's Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon. In recent years, retailers have adapted to the holiday by promoting male-oriented gifts such as electronics and tools. Families of Amateur Radio operators insist that he or she attends the Santa Maria Radio Swapfest. This year as in recent years past, Amateur Radio operators will celebrate Father's Day on Saturday June 16, 2007 at the Santa Maria Radio Swapfest The Santa Maria Radio Swapfest is sponsored by the Satellite Amateur Radio Club. You can get all of the information by downloading the swapfest flyer at: http://www.satellitearc.com/2007%20Swapfest%20Flyer.pdf In Santa Maria, California Saturday morning June 16th.
