Tony is moving A good friend of the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club, Tony Planinac, K6FCF, from Nipomo, is moving away. He got a good engineering job in Bloomington, Indiana, and the company is going to move him there. Tony says that he is having a sale this coming Saturday, March 15. Tony has accumulated a WHOLE BUNCH of electronic STUFF and must get rid of it very quickly! Give Tony a call at 805-929-4909 and get the directions to his place. Empty out your vehicle and get ready to help Tony empty his place in a hurry. He will really appreciate it and -- so will you. Darryl, KF6DI

Soaring meet
by Bill Talanian 28 Feb '08

28 Feb '08

The Third Occasional Santa Barbara Soaring Association Longest/Shortest Flight Contest is Saturday 1 March 2008 !!!! Our best prediction calls for good lapse rate to 6K. NW winds are also predicted. Im hoping/predicting that these will block by the middle of the day as frequently occurs here in Santa Barbara in these conditions. Contest rules <http://www.rrsd.com/sbsa/contest.html>www.rrsd.com/sbsa/contest.html - have been refined to consider the possibility that conditions might turn out to not be launchable. Pilots should meet at Parma Park at 9:00 AM. I realize that is very early for some of our local pilots. Please set your alarms and get there on time. This will give time to get organized. So I repeat: 9:00AM Saturday 1 March 2008 Everyone present at 9:00 AM is guaranteed the opportunity to participate. Note the following: a) You have to be a club member Those who have not already done so are encouraged to bring their filled in membership for along with a check for $30. A copy of the membership form can be found at http://www.sbsa.info/SBSAMembershipForm.pdf . Those who live outside the area or for some reason can't support the club in this way can join the club for one day for $5 - just bring a bill. b) Don't forget to bring your $15 contest entry fee. Please try to bring 3 x $5 bills we don't have big problem making change. c) Team captains will all be local pilots and will be expected to apprise all team members of local rules and customs. For example, HG pilots do not head out to the beach if they have less than 3 K at the antenna farm. d) Well meet at Parma Park before and after the contest. This is situated in the middle of an area of high value homes and we have worked hard over the years to get along with the owners. Also, its possible that members of the local news media might make an appearance. So behavior which creates any kind of public nuisance cant be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to, whooping, hollering, public drunkenness, excessive debauchery and similar behavior. e) We will have some support from the SBARC Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club. So when communicating on your 2 M Radio, observe normal radio protocol including occasional usage of your call sign. Robert Ramey

GTE Time Check
by Bill Talanian 21 Feb '08

21 Feb '08

2/21/2008 To; SBARC Phone Patch Users From: Bill Talanian Subject: GTE Time Check Another institution gone away: Remember the old talking voice GTE Time Check on the telephone which somehow never had the exact precise time. Well it apparently went away last September but is still programmed into our auto-dial system on the two-meter and 224.12 systems. This slot will remain as is until a suitable voice readout of the time is found. WWV dial-in is one possibility.

Lake Los Carneros results and upcoming events
by Marvin Johnston 06 Feb '08

06 Feb '08

The windy and stormy weather held off until evening, making February 2 a perfect day for ARDF in the Santa Barbara area. It was good to see first-timers Brad, Steve, Keith and Julianne, along with returning newcomer Owen and his dad. Everyone tried the two-meter five-fox ARDF course that was set by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. Lake Los Carneros is an ideal site for beginners to learn how to plan an ARDF route that efficiently gets them to each of the five transmitters and back in the minimum time. It's mostly level, but recent rains have swelled the lake and made some of the area into marsh. ARDF in Santa Barbara tomorrow, it's a go!
by Marvin Johnston 02 Feb '08

02 Feb '08

The weather forecast calls for only a 10 per cent chance of rain, so the first southern California radio-orienteering practice session of 2008 will take place at Lake Los Carneros near Santa Barbara on Saturday, February 2. This event is being hosted by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. The site area is slightly less than 140 acres and relatively flat. Full-color orienteering maps will be available. Some practice transmitters may also be on the air for you to find. The main 5-fox hunt begins at 10:30 AM. Hunters may start any time until 12:30 PM. Courses close at 2 PM. LAOC's electronic scoring equipment will be in use elsewhere, so standard punching will be used for this event and there will be no charge for participation. Meet at the Stow House Parking Lot just off of Los Carneros Road. >From US 101 about 8 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north about 1/4 mile and turn right into the parking lot. There should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white orienteering flag. A map for navigation to the site is at www.homingin.com. This will be the first in a series of events leading up to the USA ARDF Championships in Texas this May. Mark your calendar for upcoming events at Hillcrest Park in Fullerton on March 8 and Schabarum Regional Park on April 19. 73, Joe Moell K0OV

Weather whoa's, Rev A
by Bill Talanian 28 Jan '08

28 Jan '08

NOTICE OF EQUIPMENT OUTAGE The La Cumbre Peak wind speed and wind direction failed during one of the recent wind and rain storms. The system will report all other parameters except WS and WD. It appears to be a failure of one of the poly carbonate pieces that holds the 3 wind speed cups in place. One cup broke away causing severe vibration and break up of the unit. Fortunately we have a spare and will get it installed soon as the weather clears. The broken unit may be replaced under warrantee. Other weather matters: Note: Addition problems, total was 12.6 inches of rain not 17.5. Diablo Peak measured a total of 17.5" inches of rain from 22 Jan thru 27 Jan. The Island Roads on Santa Cruz Island suffered major damage. The road from Prisoners to the main Ranch is totally wiped out and will have to be rebuilt from scratch. Thanks to Ken Owen, N6KTH, who set up the 223.92 repeater remote base on Santa Cruz Island with the 146.88 Ventura repeater being operated from the National Weather Service Forecast Center at Oxnard. The ARO on duty is assigned there to pick up SEVERE weather observations. If stormy weather conditions look normal then a report is not be necessary. However, any report will be accepted but please keep in mind that they are looking for anything unusual such as water spouts, creek levels, flooding, heavy rainfall in excess of 1 inch per hour at a sustained rate, lighting, high wind gusts in excess of 30 mph, and evacuations. You'll know chaos when you see it. Radar and satellite, however refined, do not always pick up these subtleties. From these on the scene severe reports the NWS may ask you questions then issue additional advisories, If your not already receiving The Emergency Email and Wireless Reports then use this URL and sign up, it's free. <http://www.emergencyemailnetwork.com/> Thanks to all who participated.
