Hello all. I have a Fireball CD Rockola jukebox. It has an unusual VERTICAL CD pro player. A short while ago, I started to have trouble playing CDs. I had never had an issue before but I got the usual signs of a bad CD Player, spinning backwards, sometimes spinning really fast, but most times not playing at all. The Fireball has an unusual sled that the player rests in. Anyway, after lens cleaning, examining the CDs etc, I concluded that the player was bad. A seller on ebay had one from a Fireball (VAU1254/11), so I ordered it. He claimed it had a new laser installed. But, I am getting the same results. Every once in a while it WILL play a song or two (usually only form the same disc) but mostly will not play. I even went to Walmart and bought a brand new Steve Miller Band Greatest Hits. I get the same result from the new CD. The CD's that will not play on the Fireball, WILL play on my CD8 Rockola Bubbler. Is it likely that I bought a player that has a bad laser AND that my old player had the same; OR is there possibly some other reason? Thanks,Ron
Huh, I've never seen a Rock-Ola that plays them vertically (but I see two on ebay).
Going by the players I've repaired, I'd say the player is bad. Is the player itself able to be swapped into another juke?

I’ve had a few of those boxes. They are based on the same orange component Sybersonic audio system that is very common.
However the mechanism is a true departure as it was designed to mimic the Seeburg record rack type player. The mechanism was problematic and hard to find parts for. I think the CD drive is the same as used in Rock-Ola bubblers. Maybe confirm they’re the same and pull yours from your working box and test. The symptoms you describe are classic opto failure on the player.

Tony, It 'may' be possible to swap out the player from the Bubbler CD8 (it works great) but it would also require changing out the frame of the players. Before I do that, I am waiting to hear from the seller on EBAY. He has a great rating and sells many parts for multiple jukeboxes. He has 100% feedback (although I am concerned that I have not heard from him after I notified him that the player is not working). However, that is a great suggestion. My gut tells me that either I have a bad player or (I am reaching a bit now) the hub on the player is not pressed on far enough and keeps the CD too far away from the laser lens. The centering hub on the old unit (which I think is original equipment) was plastic. The one on the unit that I purchased on Ebay, is the milled aluminum hub. Thanks for the help. I WILL update the outcome. Again, I am thinking that I have a bad player. It is definitely not the CD's and the system knows that it is not getting a signal after several spins, and removes the CD and updates internal memory that disc ## is not available for play due to errors. There are no errors that appear when giving the machine a fresh reboot. When I get into the TEST menu (#149) and run the CD tests, it pulls disc 00 and tries to read it (so I put the brand new CD in 00). The mechanism loads the CD, the next test is to play. It fails and says "?? TRACKS". Further tests are the arm in and out. I can hear the laser arm go in and out. So, again, I am guessing a bad laser. Thanks! I will keep you updated as I go along.

The replacement player should have the same type of “hat” the original had or there could be a clamping issue. Not related to your original problem but they are mech specific
