Hello all. I have a Rockola Bubbler CD8C and when it is turned on, it give a ERROR message in the display. it says DIAGNOSTICS MODE CD Comm. Failure. Where do I start? Does anyone think it is possible that the board inside the CD PRO Player went bad? Hoping for some experienced folks to point me in the right direction. Thanks,Ron B
Are you able to select a CD and it comes out and tries to play it? If so, 99.5% of the time the laser is bad.

Tony, I am going to check again tonight to see if I can do any of that. The thing that threw me is the Comm. Failure message. I have had others that the CD Pro needed a new laser but never got this message. I will try and see if I can get anything to work like normal tonight and update. Tony et al, Here's where I am now. Some background info. I bought this CD8B Oak Bubbler from a guy who tried to fix the CD player and gave up on the repair. The first thing I notice was that he had the CD wired wrong. (A very easy thing to do for sure but...) After putting the wires on correctly, the CD Comm error went away. BUT (isn't there always a BUT?), now nothing occurs. When I start the juke up, the basket does not turn. All the lights come on and the display works. If I try to enter a CD number, lets say 3801 (Track 1 on CD 38), I only get the first two digits in and the display says not available. If I try several different numbers, I get the same message UNTIL the machine says "OUT OF ORDER" on the display. I unplugged, restarted and again no turning basket. I went into SETUP/Diagnostic Mode function (Quick Find 145) it does not move the mechanism. I tried the Cancel/Scan button but no movement, no strain either like it was binding though. Later if I close the door (activate the switch), I get "Mechanism Busy". I have to restart to get out of the "Mechanism Busy" display mode. Upon every restart, it does not spin the basket. Now, I did say that the CD player was plugged incorrectly by previous owner. To that end, and assuming the worst case scenario that he fried the CD Circuit board, I out another CD player in it. This CD player does have a weak laser (that I need to send out for replacement of the laser) but, the circuit board is good. I did this knowing that the first thing the CD8 checks in startup is the CD player. With this CD player in my other Bubbler, it boots up, goes through all the diagnostics with a breeze (It just does not play every CD - classic symptoms, spins, stops rejects the CD most times, etc.) But even when this CD player is in the box in question, it still does not spin the basket on start up. Ron. You said it was wired wrong? If the power cable was plugged into the wrong port on the pro you’re probably dealing with damaged computer. I worked on a fireball awhile back that was wired incorrectly (customer tried fixing himself) and had same symptoms you are describing. He ended up buying a used computer and that resolved the issue.

I would suggest swapping the cd player with another machine or a different player in this machine. I've heard of them plugged in wrong and self destructing, but I've SEEN them swapped three times and neither the player nor the machine was damaged, one on a Rock-Ola and two on a Rowe. Being that the customer tried fixing the player himself, I'd say it's highly likely the player is bad. Also double check the two 4 lead cables that were swapped to measure the +5vdc and the ?+ 12vdc to be sure which cable is the power, and the other being the audio.

Tony, Will do. I have another Bubbler with oranges components that I can swap parts with. I have been holding off. I want to check to see if previous owner did any other mis-connecting before I do that. I sure don't want to fry more components. But the mechanism wont turn during boot up. Rick, THAT is what I am fearing. I have an M01 (Mech Error). I will start looking out for a computer but in the meantime, I am going to check out the Mechanism for the obvious. When initiating the jukebox, I held my hand on the motor and felt nothing. I will put a voltmeter on it next and see if it momentarily gives any voltage. Will also clean the OPTO sensors. BUT, my fear IS the computer. Does anyone repair them? Or, just not worth it and try to find a used one (ORANGE). Thanks for the help - I will update. Ron

As for repairing the computer, Jorge, who worked at Rock-Ola for many years before they sold out a few years ago, he is set up to do board repairs for these jukes as his own business. He has his own shop outside of Rock-Ola, but they refer people to him. I don't know how large of an inventory he has on proprietary type parts, actually I'm not certain there is any non generic parts on the boards. I don't have his number handy, but if you call Rock-Ola I believe they will give it to you. He doesn't sell parts, just repairs the electronics.

Ron. You said it was wired wrong? If the power cable was plugged into the wrong port on the pro you’re probably dealing with damaged computer. I worked on a fireball awhile back that was wired incorrectly (customer tried fixing himself) and had same symptoms you are describing. He ended up buying a used computer and that resolved the issue.

This CD player does have a weak laser (that I need to send out for replacement of the laser) but, the circuit board is good. With this CD player in my other Bubbler, it boots up, goes through all the diagnostics with a breeze (It just does not play every CD - classic symptoms, spins, stops rejects the CD most times, etc.) But even when this CD player is in the box in question, it still does not spin the basket on start up. Wow, I am making this long! I hope evreyone has stayed with me to this point. My plan is, this weekend I am going to put a new CR2330 battery in and see if that make ANY difference. What would everyone's suggestion be to start? Should I take out the entire assembly and take off the motor to make sure it is not bound up? Looking to try anything. Tony, I remember when Jorge worked for Rock-ola. Back in the good old days when they (Rockola) were responsive and very friendly and helpful. I worked a little bit on it last night. NOW, I may be leaning toward a bound up (frozen) mechanism. I ran some quick find tests and and had two Mech errors. M01 and M04. BUT, those could still be related to the CPU. I will try to swap out the CPU this weekend. If that identifies the CPU as not working, I will give Jorge a call. Thanks! I'll keep on trying! I hate when the machines beat me - lol! Ron

As for repairing the computer, Jorge, who worked at Rock-Ola for many years before they sold out a few years ago, he is set up to do board repairs for these jukes as his own business. He has his own shop outside of Rock-Ola, but they refer people to him.
