I looking at taking on a job to redo the wire loom on the mech. As I’m sure most of you know these 50’s AMI’s all have dried up cracking insulation
Wondering what is best gauge to replace in order to still provide flexibility for the mech to traverse and no binding on the loom.
The cabinet wiring bad too but I have that covered
Regards Rick
Hey Rick
How all is well. Iirc... Lamp cord is what I recall being used. My D80 was done with it several years ago...flexible and working well.

Regular SPT-1 18 gauge lamp cord is fine. There are no big currentdraws in that mechanism. I know that Ace Hardware sells it by thefoot. The same wire that's used for the cabinet lighting.

I would definitely go with the SPT-1 18. It is the correct side to use to fit accurately throughout the mechanism under the record racks and into the the soldering pins on the plugs. Lamp wire is SPT-1 16 and too large for the job in my opinion. Good luck and enjoy. The G models are some of the best sounding machines made from that era.

SPT-1 18 Make sure it's black. Brown just doesn't look right.
Tony. It will definitely be black. I’m OCD. Thanks everyone for your input.

Ahh, that's good! I just got a G out of here and I think another one is coming Saturday. I really do NOT like working on them. This one is in a firehouse and I told the chief that it's a fire hazard then showed him the zip cord. Someone already replaced the wires for the mech but they used brown. Yuck!

I don't mind the G-80s and earlier AMIs with the bad wiring. I first ran into that problem in the early 80s when I imported a truckload of jukeboxes from Chicago - took me five years to fix and sell the fifty machines, of which maybe ten were AMIs including a pair of Conti's! Those were the days!!
Anyway the machines are reasonably reliable, and rewiring them doesn't take that long.
Consider replacing the Cam blade switches with the CAM-1 microswitch option (from the UK) that I sell, that solves so many problems on these machines! No more jammed motors blowing the 8/10A fuse, or readout clearing coils smoking out!
