Hello everyone!
I'm working on a Conti2, italian Microtecnica version.
I installed a new Audio Technica Stilo (Atn3600l), but I still have some trouble playing some 45s, towards the end of the records, when the tone arm begins to push on the switch for the end of the record.
The reset microswitch it's the original one, maybe it could be changed with some other model...?
Also, the Microtecnica version it's missing the bias spring I can see in the Conti2 manual. Just wondering if someone has a full kit to sell (I'm missing everything, the orange metal support part, as well as the spring itself), or if it can be bought somewhere.
Thanks!
Hi Federico,
If you remove or tape up th switch activator, does the arm work ok then ? I just want to rule out stuff cartridge wire or something like that?
The AT3600 can track at 4 grams so I suspect it is the stiffness of your switch. I have replaced a couple with modern equivalents of the low pressure switch and they are worse than the original.
They are on Ami HIJK and continentals, not the later Rowe Amis..
I have replaced some entirely with a magnetic reed switch in the past. This seems to work.
You may want to try disassembling your existing switch (can be done with care), cleaning the contacts and making sure the tension is reduced somehow.
The anti skate spring won't make a difference to this problem, in fact it will make it worse. It's not really necessary for tracking at 4 grams anyway.
A good original switch will work perfectly with modern cartridges tracking at 3 grams, so it's likely your switch needs some maintenance.

Ok, I was hoping that something better could be found in the market today, but this is not the case.

That could be a good option, I think. Did you managed to use the existing screws and hardware, to make it...?
You may want to try disassembling your existing switch (can be done with care), cleaning the contacts and making sure the tension is reduced somehow.
For now, I managed to reduce the movement of the switch's blade to the minimum, and to have it to close contact almost as soon as it's hit, so the arm does not move it until the very last moment.
The anti skate spring won't make a difference to this problem, in fact it will make it worse. It's not really necessary for tracking at 4 grams anyway.
Ok

Perfect, I'll see what can i manage to do.
Thanks!
Here are the only real ways of getting good, low wear tracking.
1) Replace the crude pressure spring with a counterweight at the end of the tonearm
2) Replace the exiting tonearm wires with newer, more flexible wires. I keep the originals for the run to the amp and just connect the new arm wires via RCA plugs near the arm.
3) On two continentals I replaced the original trip switch with a set of blades from a rock ola machines. You'll need to make a bracket to mount it. A magnet reed switch is also do-able.
If you do the first two the arm will track and trip reliably at 3 grams.
I did these mods on a C1, C2, H and I as well as several Rock Ola models.
This work is not a big deal and will save a lot of record wear and permit decent carts to be used.

Do you have a picture somewhere of this mod, just to check how it could be done? Do you install some sort of adjustable counterweight...?
Thanks,
