I just put a new main fiber gear in my W1015 and was wondering if it required any lubrication? I put a few drops of oil on the worm gear but I’ve heard different opinions over the years so now that it was my turn to do this I thought I’d ask the option of the group. Thanks, Mauro

Thank you John! That’s what I thought as well but I did remember seeing some conversations in the past. It has just a bit of oil on it now, hopefully that won’t cause ant issues. Mauro

Fibre gear may absorb oil or grease, and this would tend to weaken them. They are like plastic gears and self-lubricating as I recall.
I could be wrong of course! Won’t be the first time…

I don't think I've ever seen one that wasn't oiled or greased. Although the oil on them may have gotten there inadvertently.

I stand (I'm sitting actually) corrected! I really should have read the manual again...
From the 1015 manual Section IV, Maintenance, pg 36:
*LUBRICATION *
*CHASSIS*
*Oil the main cam shaft front and rear bearings, the main drive bearings, the motor oil cups, the brake and the turntable and bearing assembly with SAE No. 10 acid free and wax free oil. (See Figures 51, 52, 53 and 54.) Use SAE No. 40 oil to lubricate the clutch and the /_main drive gears_/. *
Elsewhere the main drive gear is shown as the fibre gear and shaft...

I have to watch out for assumptions! Nylon gears must not be lubricated and I extrapolated that - when I should have just RTFM!

Believe it or not, nylon absorbs water! It is hygroscopic. I don't know if it's that and/or grease that makes it expand. I think it is an old United (before Williams), or maybe a Chicago Coin brand shuffle alley that these two certain nylon "butterfly" gears would swell and bind. A lot of them had grease on them, but some were clean(ish) and dry and they too swelled. I don't know if the ones that were greased, if that was an attempt to make them work after they had already swelled, or if the grease made them swell? Sort of the chicken and the egg.
