Next SoCal radio-orienteering April 6

The next southern California on-foot "foxhunt" of 2002 will be Saturday, April 6 at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. Practice transmitters will go on the air around 11:30 AM, and the main multiple-fox hunt will begin at 12:30 PM. This two-meter direction-finding practice/demonstration is sponsored by the Fullerton Radio Club. All ages are welcome. There is no charge for participation. A ham radio license and/or knowledge of radio equipment is not required. Several models of domestic and imported hand-held RDF sets as well as commercial and home-built antennas will be available to view and try out. Basic equipment, such as hand-held receivers and "scanners," can also be successfully used. If possible, bring a handi-talkie, receiver, or scanner covering the two-meter band for each person who will be going ARDFing. If you have directional antennas, attenuators, or other on-foot RDF equipment, be sure to bring it. Make sure all batteries are fresh. Mile Square Park is bounded on the west by Brookhurst Street, on the north by Edinger Avenue, on the east by Euclid Street and on the south by Warner Avenue. The hunt area is approximately the eastern third of the total square mile area. Vehicular entrance and parking within Mile Square Park costs $4, but you can park just outside along the streets for free. The starting area will be near Euclid street, midway between Edinger and Warner Avenues. Look for signs at the entrances and an orange and white orienteering flag at the starting site. There are plenty of picnic tables, so you can bring your lunch. Talk-in will be on K6QEH/R 146.97(-) PL136.5 In addition to the two-meter band, international ARDF championships also include an 80-meter band event. At least one optional 80m transmitter (3565 KHz) will be on the air for you to try. This will be the last southern California practice session before the USA ARDF Championships in Pine Mountain, Georgia, April 19-21. Saturday VE Session

Just a reminder that this Saturday, March 9th, is the Santa Barbara area VE Session. While pre-registration is preferred, walk-ins are also accepted. The examiners on the VE team also need to see two forms of identification, at least one with your photo ID such as a driver's license. Fairview Ave Goleta, CA >>> How do I Share my Pictures? <<< There are a variety of ways of sharing pictures, including o Standard photographic prints o Color printer prints (often inkjet) o Online photographic galleries o Web pages o Email attachments o CD-ROM and DVD Which method is best depends upon your audience, of course. Tonight's presentation will show the advantages and problems of each of these approaches so you will know which one to pick for a specific project. Here's a brief overview of some of the more common possibilities: Photographic Prints: Viewable anywhere, but are costly in quantity, especially if they have to be mailed. Easily obtained and fairly long-lived compared to most inkjet prints. Color Printer Prints: Similar features as photographic prints, but with the additional advantage that a small number can be printed quickly when needed (Aunt Sue needs a copy of the graduation picture before she leaves). However, they often are more costly than photographic prints, many are short-lived, and the time it takes to print a significant number can be inconvenient. Email Attachments: OK for a few recipients who are somewhat savvy, but take much longer to receive than getting the same picture from the Web. Also, many people don't have a simple way of going back and retrieving a specific picture from their email, while pictures on the Web are always accessible. Online Photographic Galleries: Cost is the same no matter how many people look at the pictures, and there's no shipping cost or time. However, people can see the pictures only when they are at their computer, and it may be quite time-consuming for people to browse a large number of pictures. Web Pages: Same features and drawbacks as the online photo galleries, but with the added feature of you have complete control of the appearance and design, and the added difficulty that you have to *do* the design. CD-ROM: Costs much less than prints, both to produce and to mail. Requires a computer or TV with recent DVD player to view. Retrieving pictures from a CD is nearly instantaneous, while getting pictures from the web or via email can be quite slow. A CD can be set up to automatically start up and run a "slide show" on most computers (Windows and Macintosh), or it can be made as a "VideoCD" which is playable on DVD players. ******************************************************************* Parking is available at the church next door to the library. He will cover the basics of how to take digital video and prepare it for several different purposes: as a tiny clip to attach to email, as a larger format QuickTime movie that can be played from a CD or web site, and even an introduction to VideoCD and DVD, both of which can be played on most modern DVD players. Harold will be using a Mac and iMovie. These concepts can be applied to other platforms as well. *********************************************************** Parking is available at the church next door to the library. Silent Key

It is with the deepest sadness I relate to you the death of Allen Sochel, WA6IDZ, at his home on Tuesday night, January 29th. His passing was peaceful with his wife June at his side. A memorial gathering is planned for Saturday, February 16th, at 10 a.m. at the Montecito Country Club. Details will be announced later this week in the News-Press. Al had served on the SBARC Board in past years and was our Executive Vice President in 2001. His calm presence added so much dignity to our gatherings and, when asked, his wise advice was always logical and fair. He enjoyed participating in event communications and was a friendly voice to chat with any time. He was a great friend and I will miss him greatly. Lou Dartanner, N6ZKJ

ARRL FIELD DAY, AFFILIATED CLUB COMPETITION CHANGES ANNOUNCED

From: *************** The ARRL Letter Vol. 21, No. 5 February 1, 2002 *************** ==>ARRL FIELD DAY, AFFILIATED CLUB COMPETITION CHANGES ANNOUNCED The ARRL has adopted rule changes affecting Field Day and the ARRL Affiliated Club Competition program. The primary Field Day change--effective with this year's event June 22-23--phases out the Novice-Technician station and replaces it with a new station category, the "Get-On-The-Air"--or GOTA--station. A GOTA station is intended for operation by Novice and Technician operators or by generally inexperienced or inactive amateurs as well as by as-yet-unlicensed or "under-licensed" operators working under the privileges of a licensed control operator (third-party traffic rules apply--see the International Third Party Traffic page on the ARRL Web site <http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regulations/io/3rdparty.html>). Under the revised rules, any Class A Field Day entry operating at least two transmitters may include a GOTA station, which will not count as an additional transmitter for the purpose of entry category. The GOTA station may operate on any Field Day band and mode, but only one GOTA transmitter may be in use at any given time. The GOTA station may complete up to 400 QSOs to be counted toward the group's total Field Day score. A Field Day group can claim 100 bonus points if its GOTA station successfully completes 400 QSOs. The GOTA station does not affect the additional VHF/UHF station provided under Field Day rule 4.1.2. Field Day 2002 will mark the first in which stations throughout the Americas have been invited to participate. As approved at the July 2001 ARRL Board of Directors' meeting, all International Amateur Radio Union Region 2 countries--North and South America--may take part in Field Day starting this June. Field Day 2002 pins and T-shirt may be ordered now via the ARRL Web catalog <http://www.arrl.org/catalog/?category=&words=Field+Day+Pin>. Changes to the ARRL Affiliated Club Competition program also were included in the report of the Membership Services Committee (MSC), presented to the ARRL Board of Directors at its January meeting. In accordance with the advice of the ARRL Contest Advisory Committee, five specific affiliated club competition changes will go into effect November 1. Under the revised rules: * The requirement that a member must attend at least two club meetings a year in order to be allowed to submit a score for a club in the unlimited and medium categories has been altered. The new rules will allow participation by "a member in good standing, as defined by the club." * Medium and unlimited clubs now may define their club service area either as a 175-mile radius circle or as an entire ARRL section. This change will allow clubs from larger states that encompass entire ARRL sections to compete with each other. * The percentage of operators who must be members of a club in order for the club to claim a score from a multioperator station has been reduced from 66% to 50%. * A station owner no longer must be a member of a club in order for a guest operator at the station to claim the score for that club. * Canadian clubs that are full Radio Amateurs of Canada affiliates now may participate in the ARRL Affiliated Clubs Competition. These changes affect ARRL contests that include a club competition--January VHF Sweepstakes, the ARRL International DX Contest, the September VHF Party, the ARRL November Sweepstakes, the ARRL 160-Meter Contest and the ARRL 10-Meter Contest.
