Dakota tribal wisdom says that when you discover you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount. However, in business we often try other strategies with dead horses, including the following: 1. Buying a stronger whip. 2. Changing riders. 3. Say things like, "This is the way we have always ridden this horse." 4. Appointing a committee to study the horse. 5. Arranging to visit other sites to see how they ride dead horses. 6. Increasing the standards to ride dead horses. 7. Appointing a tiger team to revive the dead horse. 8. Creating a training session to increase our riding ability. 9. Comparing the state of dead horses in todays environment. 10. Change the requirements declaring that "This horse is not dead." 11. Hire contractors to ride the dead horse. 12. Harnessing several dead horses together for increased speed. 13. Declaring that "No horse is too dead to beat." 14. Providing additional funding to increase the horse's performance. 15. Do a Cost Analysis study to see if contractors can ride it cheaper. 16. Purchase a product to make dead horses run faster. 17. Declare the horse is "better, faster and cheaper" dead. 18. Form a quality circle to find uses for dead horses. 19. Revisit the performance requirements for horses. 20. Say this horse was procured with cost as an independent variable. 21. Promote the dead horse to a supervisory position

US ARDF Team Now Forming

I received this from Joe Moell a couple of days ago. The classes he refers to are: D 15 ____ M 15 ____ D 20 ____ M 20 ____ D 35 ____ M 35 ____ D 50 ____ M 40 ____ M 50 ____ M 60 ____ D - Female, M - Male The numbers are the ages of the competitors to the next highest catagory, i.e, M 50 are males between the ages of 50 and 59. Currently, SBARC members Scott Moore (KF6IKO) and myself (KE6HTS) are planning on attending the championships (if we make the team!) ************** The World Championships of Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF) take place in even-numbered years. Slovak Amateur Radio Association (SARA) will host the Eleventh ARDF World Championships during the first week of September. The site is Tatranske Matliare in the High Tatras of the Slovak Republic, at about 900 meters elevation. Here is the schedule of events: September 2 - Monday - Arrival of the Participants September 3 - Tuesday - Training on Both Bands, Opening Ceremony September 4 - Wednesday - 2 Meter Band Race September 5 - Thursday - Free Day with Cultural Program September 6 - Friday - 80 Meter Band Race, Awarding Ceremony, Closing Ceremony, Hamfest September 7 - Saturday - Departure of the Participants Competitors are divided into five categories for males and four categories for females, in accordance with newly approved ARDF rules of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU). Each country may have up to three persons per category on its team. Two Slovak hotels will be taken over for the exclusive use of competitors. The entry fee of US$300 per person includes hotel accommodations (double occupancy), meals, local transportation to the Championships events, and fees for the Cultural Program. As an alternative, entrants may camp in their own tents and provide their own meals, in which case the fee is US$150 per person. Each participating country must submit a Letter of Intent with tentative team size by the end of January. (Note that these letters are submitted only by the countries' national societies -- such as ARRL -- and NOT by each individual competitor.) For USA's Letter of Intent, I need a preliminary "head count" of interested radio-orienteers right away. If you are interested in competing at the 2002 ARDF World Championships on Team USA, please let me know by e-mail immediately. If you have not been on Team USA before, include your full name and mailing address, home phone number, and date of birth. Entry fees are due in full to the organizers by July 15, 2002. If more than three persons apply for Team USA in any age/gender category, selection will be made on the basis of performances in the First USA ARDF Championships (Albuquerque, August 2001) and the Second USA ARDF Championships (Atlanta, April 2002). Hamfest 2002

Hi all, Hamfest this year will be held on Sunday, August 11th at the Elks Lodge in Goleta. The SBARC Board approved the committee for the 2002 Hamfest at the January Board Meeting and the current members are: Marvin Johnston, KE6HTS - Hamfest Chairman Dennis Schwendtner, WB6OBB Darryl Widman, KF6DI Tom Saunders, N6TX Bernie Wright, W9ROH Steve Hammer, KG6ENA At this point, we do not have anyone to lead the cook crew and are looking for someone to lead that team. If you know of someone who would be interested in that position, please let me know. Along the lines of a cook crew, one thing that might to help keep it as a team is to do cooking events for other events. We used to have a BBQ after the teardown at Field Day. This would be a wonderful way to start bringing club members together in a way that can help to build club spirit and participation. Having an event once per year makes it difficult to keep any team together, so a thought is to perhaps have the team also volunteer to do BBQs for other clubs/organizations similar to what the Elks do. One of my main Hamfest concerns (as it was when I was co-chair and chair in 1995/96) is to build not only for this year, but for the future as well. Working only on this years event is a sure formula for failure next year. "Re-inventing the wheel" each year is not good management. As such, we need to have a vision for not only this hamfest, but also for the future. Where would we like the SBARC Hamfest to go? My original vision was to see this event evolve into a major West Coast event. For something like this to happen takes vision, people working together ... and most importantly, a desire. Another of my main concerns is people getting burned out at Hamfest and not being able to enjoy the event themselves. This is not right. Hamfest is supposed to be a fun event for everyone and we will be working to make this an enjoyable event for everyone *including* the volunteers. First please realize the Hamfest Committee is here to organize the event and we will need YOUR help! A rough schedule leading up to Hamfest will be: Initial Planning Meeting Form sub-committees to take care of the individual events. Publicity campaign Hamfest Critique meeting - What did we do that was good, and what needs to be changed!!! While the initial planning meeting will only be open to committee members, that does not mean we do not want input!!!!! In any planning/brainstorming session, more than about 6 - 8 people becomes non-productive. Future meetings will be open to everyone. Questions that will be discussed at our first planning session include: What are the goals for Hamfest, both this year and in the future? What types of prizes and drawings will be most effective in building Hamfest? What type of events/activities will draw Hams from out of the area? What type of events/activities do OUR club members want? How can you help? Let us know your ideas, what YOU liked about previous Hamfests, and what you would like to see at this Hamfest. Let us know what you DIDN'T like about previous hamfests as well. Publicity is important: tell your friends about Hamfest and ask them to attend! Volunteer to help!!! I'm certain things have been left out above and comments sent either privately or to this listserver are welcome. I've copied the email addresses of the committee on this email if you want to repond to anyone privately. One of the major advantages to this listserver is that people can keep informed and get active at a time convenient to them! So please respond!!! I envision this listserver as one of the major ways of communication with respect to Hamfest. The more people we get involved, the more successful this event will be!!! And of course, we will keep the latest information available on the SBARC web site at www.sbarc.org; that information will become available after our first planning meeting. "The theme is using Amateur Radio in education," says The Big Project Coordinator Jerry Hill, KH6HU. "This is your opportunity to show off your creativity." The deadline for entries is December 28, 2001! All entries should incorporate the ARRL diamond, portray the proper image in both black-and-white and in color, and be the same size as other standard patches, such as ARES--typically 3.5 inches in diameter. Happy Thanksgiving

I received the following email from the SCONet (Southern California Orienteering Net) listserver today that expresses very well the attitudes that have helped the Bay Area Orienteering Club (BAOC) grow to the extent that they have. When Sergei and I were up there for an Orienteering meet a little over a month ago, the friendliness and encouragement of everyone involved was wonderful; the enthusiasm people have for the both the sport and the BAOC was clearly evident. These are the types of attitudes that help to build any volunteer organization. With the change of SBARC board, it is my feverent hope that SBARC will again work towards being one of the best clubs in the nation with people who WANT to both belong to and get involved with our club! A very happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!! ********** A year ago, I had not even heard of orienteering. Now it's what I do on Sundays. Thank you, Jill Seaman, for introducing Debra and me to the sport. Thank you, Peter Graube, for letting us be involved in the preparations for Big Basin, so we got an idea of just how much advance work went into an event. And therefore, a big thankyou to all the meet directors and course setters for all your efforts. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with registration, starts, finishes, results, and pickup. Especially to EvnJean, who did registration at almost every meet I attended, from Emerald Hills to Calero. Thanks also to the paperwork people (such as everybody listed on page 2 of the Bulletin), who got it done behind the scenes so the events could happen. Thank you, Jeff, for the newsletter, and Abby, for the website. A special thankyou to the experienced orienteers who take time to talk to beginners, offering encouragement and advice.
