prolonging lead-acid battery life?

Is there any REAL benefit using a pulse-type charger for lead-acid batteries to extend battery life, and prohibit the sulfation of the battery's lead plates? The products from this company (http://www.pulsetech.com/) claim as such. Thanks in advance, :-) neil KE6DCJ

Here's an update on major events taking place in the Southwestern Division... Right Now: The ARRL is surveying its membership regarding which future on-line ARRL Certification and Continuing Education (C-CE) courses hams would be most likely to take. The list of possibilities ranges from antennas to VHF and UHF operation. The Web-based survey is now open for input. The survey period will end October 27. Log yourself into the members-only web page and visit http://www.arrl.org/members-only/cce/ccesurv.html Oct 11-13: Western States VHF/UHF and Microwave Conference, held at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel at Towne Center, 12725 Center Court Drive, Cerritos, CA. More info at www.wswss.org See you there! Oct 12: Huntington Central Park will be the site of Southern California's next international-style on-foot foxhunt on Saturday, October 12. This is a "Welcome Home" event for ARDF Team USA 2002 members, but it is free and open to everyone who wants to see and try the sport. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment is not required. Come out and meet some of the radio-athletes who represented USA at the Eleventh World ARDF Championships in Slovakia during the first week of September. Oct 17-20: The national Girl Scout Convention will be held in Long Beach from October 17-20 at the Long Beach Convention Center. The convention is aimed at GSA adults - council administrators and leaders, troop leaders, and Senior Scouts. There will be an Amateur Radio exhibit in the foyer that will be visited by 15,000 convention attendees. If you are willing to help staff the Amateur Radio exhibit, please contact Carina Lister, kf6zyy(a)arrl.net Oct 19-20: Scouting's annual Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) takes place Saturday October 19 through Sunday October 20 local time. For the first time, ARRL is requesting that any club or individual planning to be active during the 2002 JOTA activity register on the "Youth Skeds" page on the ARRL Web site. The idea is to provide a database of scheduled JOTA activity in advance of the event to help more scouting groups to participate in JOTA 2002. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Brownies and Venture Scouts soon will take to the airwaves in an effort to communicate with each other via Amateur Radio. SBARC Events 2002

Greetings! Communicators are needed for SBARC's last two public service events of 2002, the MS Bike Tour & Fest on Oct.12th & the Santa Barbara News-Press Half-Marathon on November 2nd. The MS Bike Tour will range from Hope Ranch, in Santa Barbara to Emma Wood State Beach, in Ventura. 15 operators are still needed to fill "SAG" vehicles and reststops. Please contact me if you'd like to work this event. There will be a meeting for SAG drivers and radio operators on Thursday, October 4th at 6:30 p.m. at the M.S. office at 14 W. Huntington Beach Radio-Orienteering October 12, 2002 Huntington Central Park will be the site of southern California's next international-style on-foot foxhunt. This is a "Welcome Home" event for ARDF Team USA 2002 members, but it is free and open to everyone who wants to see and try the sport. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment is not required. Come out and meet some of the radio-athletes who represented USA at the Eleventh World ARDF Championships in Slovakia during the first week of September. The entire park is 350 acres, although some of it is unavailable for ARDF. It is relatively flat, but you'll encounter lots of vegetation (shade!) and plenty of trails. The two-meter course will be suitable for both beginners and advanced radio-orienteers. Beginners may go out as individuals or pairs. All ages are welcome, but young children should be accompanied by an adult. Bring any 2-meter RDF "sniffing" gear you have. If you don't have any, just bring your HT or scanner. A limited number of RDF sets will be available for loan. Also be sure to bring anything you'll need while going after those radio foxes, such as munchies, bottled water and sunscreen. Course maps will be available, so bring your own compass, protractor and pencil. Make sure all batteries are fresh. Practice and beginner 2-meter transmitters will go on the air around 11:30 AM, and the main 5-fox hunt will begin at 12:30 PM. There are picnic tables nearby, so you can bring your lunch. We will start from the parking lot at the north end of the park. The entrance is on the south side of Slater Avenue, east of Golden West Street intersection. There are no fees for entry or parking, but parking may be limited depending on other activities in the park that day. Look for the orange and white Orienteering flag and signs. I will most likely leave SB around 8:30 - 9:00am. We usually have dinner after the hunt is over and the transmitters have been retrieved, and will most likely be back in SB around 8pm - 9pm.
