Opportunity Strikes!

Hi everyone, I just received the following notice from SCONet, an orienteering listserver, and thought that people here might be interested! *********************************************** Recently, I was contacted by a representative of ëNo Opportunity Wastedí, a new television show that will debut on the Discovery Channel in the fall of next year. The show will let ordinary people live out a dream that can completed in three days, and for not more than $3,000. Although any dream will be considered, the show is particularly interested in those that promote the outdoor, active sides of people. Even though the show does air for about ten months, production will need to get underway well before then. In fact, the search for people to be on the show is now underway. The representative of the show that I have been speaking with has orienteering experience, in school, and in college, while growing up in Canada. He felt that orienteers, with their adventurous spirits and willingness to head off into unknown terrain, might be exactly the kind of dreamers the show is looking for, and asked me to post information about the shows search for people with dreams. Following this message, you will find a press release detailing the search for people to appear on the show. Information, and sample dreams, can also be found at the showís web site, http://media.dsc.discovery.com/fansites/now/now.html. The deadline for applying is December 31st, so start dreaming. An orienteer being selected for the show would be great publicity for our sport (as long as the person keeps remembering to mention orienteering, which, granted, could be tricky while in the midst of living out a dream, and having it filmed, in just three days). Also, whether or not an orienteer is selected to be on the show, orienteering may still get some exposure, or have some involvement, with the show. If someone has a dream that involves navigating, we may be called upon to serve in a technical advisory capacity. Dream on. Perhaps after the application period is complete, someone can put together an article for ëOrienteering North Americaí with some of the three-day dreams of orienteers. California club to host USA ARDF Championships

*************** The ARRL Letter Vol. 22, No. 47 November 28, 2003 *************** ==>SANTA BARBARA CLUB TO HOST USA ARDF CHAMPIONSHIPS The Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club will host the 2004 USA Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF) Championships, ARRL ARDF Coordinator Joe Moell, K0OV, announced this week. Moell said the fourth annual USA ARDF event will be held next June in California. "Radio-orienteers from all over the country plus visitors from abroad are expected to attend," Moell said. "The competitive courses are open to anyone of any age from any country, with or without an Amateur Radio license." Medals will be awarded in five age categories for male competitors and four for female competitors, in accordance with International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) rules. The competition, which will include both 80-meter and 2-meter events, gets under way June 16. After a day for practice and alignment sessions and opening ceremonies the full-length 2-meter competition will take place June 18. The 80-meter competition will take place the next day, followed by closing ceremonies. Moell says the USA Championships will occur just in time for final selection of ARDF Team USA 2004 members. Those chosen for Team USA will travel to the Czech Republic for the 12th ARDF World Championships, September 7-12. "Team positions will be filled based on performances in the 2004 events in California and the 2003 events in Ohio," he explained. One of North America's ARDF pioneers, Marvin Johnston, KE6HTS, will serve as general chair for the 2004 USA Championships. Johnston was a member of USA's first team to the 1998 ARDF World Championships held in Hungary and he won medals at the last two USA ARDF Championships. The hosting SBARC also "has an abundance of ARDF talent," Moell said. That includes club president Jay Hennigan, WB6RDV, who took gold in his age category on both 80 and 2 meters in this year's USA Championships in Cincinnati. Other SBARC medal winners include Scott Moore, KF6IKO, who won bronze on 80 and 2 meters in Cincinnati. SBARC will collaborate with the Los Angeles Orienteering Club (LAOC) to prepare maps and set up the start/finish areas for the competition. An official Web site for the 2004 Championships is under construction. It will contain complete rules and technical details, including competition frequencies, plus registration and lodging information. Traffic Management Class

Folks, We have arranged for Deputy Brad Smith of the County Sheriff's Department to give us a short class on traffic management and safety. This will cover basic safety issues when you have to pull off the road (on fire watch for example), set up a fixed post (fire watch or event communications), set up barricades (parades), and manage and direct traffic safely. While it is NOT our responsibility to direct traffic or assist with traffic control, there are times when accidents happen and we are in a position to help. There are also time when we want to avoid becoming a hazard and causing an accident. This class is meant to give you basic safety information to allow you to help mitigate the danger until the professionals arrive -- not unlike first aid. This class is for ARES members and SBARC members who participate in event communications activities. it will be held on Monday, November 17th, at 7 p.m. in the County Health Services Auditorium. Kenwood TH-F6A Problem

My Kenwood has just started acting up. Here are the symptoms: When I key down, the TX meter appears briefly and then it quites. Followed by intermittent beeps. I was unable to check into the Net at 9 PM tonight due to this problem. I have done a full reset and problem still persists. Any ideas for a cure? Paul Cronshaw KF6TRT

October Meeting of Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club October 17 - Emergency Services Night: Hospital Disaster Support Communications System Speaker - April Moell, WA6OPS Meeting Starts - 7:30 PM Location: Goleta Union Schools Admin. Board Room 401 N. Fairview Ave., Goleta The Hospital Disaster Support Communications System of Orange County has been in existance for 23 years and has responded to 75 emergencies in support of 35 hospitals. Lots has been learned along the way regarding activation procedures, hospital interface, and training etc. This presentation will offer case studies of several emergencies (e.g. Placentia train collison; Laguna Fire) to which HDSCS has responded and highlight how the ARES structure, activation procedures and specialized training led to accomplishing the mission of backing up communications critical to patient care. With experience both as an Amateur Radio operator and hospital employee, April Moell found it natural to combine the two in HDSCS. She passed her first ham operator test in 1976 and now holds an Advanced Class license. As a Registered Occupational Therapist, April served for 17 years as Director of Occupational and Recreational Therapies at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, CA. While there, she originated HDSCS. She also founded the Rehab Radio program, which used Amateur Radio communications as a therapy tool with patients recovering from stroke, head injury, and spinal cord injury. In addition, she initiated the North Pole Network, which brings joy to hospital patients of all ages at Christmas time. If you are planning on attending dinner with the speaker, please let Marvin KE6HTS (marvin(a)rain.org) know so we can make reservations. The dinner will be held at Cody's Restaurant at 5:30pm. Cody's is located in the shopping center at the corner of Hollister Ave and Turnpike Rd.
