Jay, someone else on another site just told me to connect the 2 negatives together instead of the positives like you mentioned. Does the polarity matter?

No, and the failure mode can be rather spectacular. Electrolytics really don't like reverse voltage.
However, you can make a non-polarized capacitor by connecting two capacitors, each double the capacitance of the original, in series back-to-back.
So, take two 3000 MFD 35V capacitors (closest standard value is 3300) connect their + terminals to each other and nothing else. Connect the - leads to the two points of the original NP capacitor.
