The adjustments in the manual are only relevant with the GE factory installed cartridge.
If you have a different cartridge it will hang lower and the adjustments will need to be more, and trial and error.
There is a hex adjustment on the pivot of the arm bracket (not the arm itself) and also on the front of the arm bracket set in a locking nut if you lift it you will see the small hex screw adjustment there also.
That Ami arm rises on a cam, it's quite unusual in the way it works. So you need to screw down the hex screw at the rear of the arm, so that the rotation of the cam lifts the arm up more.

The tonearm height adjustment could be off. How far is the stylus abovelead-in groove before it sets down? When rejecting, does it scrapeacross the full width of the record, or at some point does it lift up?
