Here is a previous reply I found from Jay (who runs this wonderful resource).
“You can use any small-signal PNP silicon transistor. 2N3906, 2N2907, etc. The circuit design is very forgiving as far as the difference in voltage drop between germanium and silicon in this case.”
I personally use the 2N3906, only because they are cheap and plentiful in my area. NTE also makes a cross for this but I don’t recall the number. Mauro
