They did.  It was a version of the Shure 44, the M44MR.  There's a picture here: http://tildebang.com/jukebox/images/shure_m44mr_pickup_ami.jpg I've also tried the Dremmel tool with mixed results.  As long as you don'tcut into the metal case under the plastic cover of the cartridge you're safe.
