Thank you Jim. Restored the box a few years back and it went to my son’s home. He called with the issue and I couldn’t remember how the muting was accomplished.

This machine is muted by shorting the input. There is a little plate under the tonearm that shorts out when the tonearm is lowered at end of play. The speaker is usually a PM type with a 5K ohm resistor mounted to it. This resistor is undersized and frequently burns up. Check this and replace it with a 50 or 100 watt version. Sound went out suddenly on my 1428. The amp has been re-capped and tubes replaced 3 years ago. Wondering if there is a mute switch I might could check and it’s location.
