Island adventures

To: All radio amateurs From: Bill Talanian Subject: Island trip Rev A dates Oooppss. Got a conflict on the Island for the dates I originally put out. We are good for 13-15 June. Probably never a date that fits all so we take what we get. We have a limited number of openings for a weekend of work & play at the UC compound on Santa Cruz Island. Transportation paid. Leave on Friday June 13 and return on Sunday June 15nd. Tasks will be to install mobile radio's in vehicles and one base station. Sleeping quarters are included. However, cost of food is typically shared amongst team members once a menu is agreed upon. This is an ideal time to learn about the centuries old history of Santa Cruz Island and the 30 year history of amateur radio. This will be a split exercise with one team at The Nature Conservancy and the other at UC. Joint team tasks will be performed when required. There are a lot of tools, test equipment, food, water etc. and logistics to be planned and worked upon so we need to know very soon the total number we can take. Dave Lamb - WA6BRW - SK

Dave was born in Santa Barbara, June 2, 1929 and was an eighth generation Santa Barbara native. He was the younger son of Harry A. Lamb and Barbara Cota Lamb. He attended Santa Barbara High School and University California Santa Barbara up above the SB Mission. His class was the first graduating class from UCSB at its' current location in Goleta. He met the love of his life (Barbara Durning Lamb) at UCSB and they married at the Santa Barbara Mission in 1956. He worked in the insurance business right out of college, Harris and Frank (men's clothing) on State St. and finally purchased the Tree House Restaurant from his brother, Ed Lamb, in the early 1970's. He sold the restaurant in 1986 and retired. During the 1970's he found Amateur "Ham" Radio, obtained his license, and taught classes from his home. For over 40 years, he was involved with ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) and was instrumental in running the local chapters. He was deeply involved in emergency services, providing assistance to the fire and police departments, with his car radio. His Ham Radio provided contact between emergency service personnel from the repeaters (located on mountains in several local areas) and would connect when phone service was non-existent. He received many awards and recognition for this vital service. Several years after the death of his wife Barbara in 1997, he returned to the work force, working in the Isla Vista property management office of his daughter. He always said "He had to have a reason to get up in the morning." He thoroughly enjoyed his job, working with the college students. He would tease them about going shopping with their rent money. In turn, they would see him around Isla Vista and run over with their rent checks, to make sure he received his 'shopping money'. He had a knack for making the students laugh, sharing life stories, and his 1956 year book from UCSB. He always said that the students 'kept him young'. He was a wonderful, happy person. He enjoyed life to its' fullest, with travels to Brazil, Paris, Caribbean cruises and many camping/fishing trips to the Sierras. He was independent, driving himself to Ventura just for lunch, walking 1-2 miles downtown Santa Barbara every day prior to his illness, and stopping at various restaurants to chat with friends, have a glass of wine or a meal. He went to movies frequently, often with his older brother, Ed. Working in Isla Vista, he became a huge fan of UCSB Gaucho Men's Basketball and went to every home game. He would cheer and call the players by name, many of whom were tenants of the office. He also read voraciously, preferring the hard cover books to a Kindle or Nook. He will always be associated with the ARES group for his determination, countless hours of volunteer work, and huge fund raising campaigns to provide the repeaters necessary for emergency contact. He is survived by his daughter, Valerie Lamb Sweatt (Ed), granddaughter Julianne Marie Sweatt, brother Ed Lamb, extended family and LOTS of friends. He was deeply loved as "Daddy, Dave and Papa". Join us in a celebration of his life on Monday, May 12th at 11:00AM at the chapel of Welch-Ryce-Haider, 15 East Sola St. in Santa Barbara. Please share your favorite stories about Dave. Gravesite services will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery , in Solvang. DRTE 100 Race 2014

"It's just around the Bend." Famous words for any packer or runner. Well in this case I am talking about the 2014 DRTE 100 (Dirt Road Trail Endurance) Ultra Race. This is the 4th annual Race. This year it is a 100 mile and 100k Race. http://drte100.com/ The event is coming up again at the end of May. This time it is a weekend only event- starting at 0500 on Saturday, May 31st and ending at 1700 on Sunday, June 1st. They will also be a 10k, 25k and 50k on Saturday. We are not required to be there on Friday, but you can come out and set up or camp out if you wish. The course is different this year as it is using much more off road trails and aid stations. Most of the aid stations can be driven up to except Camuesa Connector, Doulton Tunnel, and El Manatial. This is an event that is made for us HAM operators to shine. There is little to no cell phone access and because of that, the race relies on us so much that they advertise our importance on the front page of their web site. The DRTE 100 is hosted entirely within the Santa Barbara Ranger District, Los Padres National Forest. No other event depends on us as much as this one does. This year I would like to be able to say we can cover all aid stations without overtaxing any one individual. We will be using the Rover and its repeater at the top of East Camino Cielo as we did last year. That had good reach from the far end of the course to the start. I need anyone who has time available Saturday and/or Sunday so we can start to set up schedules. Please get back to me if you can participate for any or all of this fun event. Collaborative transmitter found - being moved

I have retrieved the transmitter from its second hiding spot. There were eight callsigns in the log, double last time. Well done! Site maintenance

Folks: The recent email outreach for grounds maintenance assistance at the Mesa site did not mature. Regrettably only one candidate offered assistance but felt he did not wish to head up a team for on-going maintenance. Lacking a volunteer initiative we have a couple of other alternatives. Either pay someone within the amateur group to head up the grounds maintenance or use outside contract services. This past year the Club paid $200 to an outside gardener with truck & crew for a one time yard clean up. Typically the yard requires 3-4 clean up periods a year depending on rain etc.. Without volunteers the Board may have to consider funding the yard maintenance. Meanwhile the hunt for a volunteer team will continue. Background: Presently the major portion of the hill top grounds maintenance is covered by an outside contractor who is paid by the City Water Department. This service is not contracted to cover the fenced in portion used by the Public Works Department which surrounds the City radio building, AT&T, and SBARC. The Club is hosted at the Mesa site by the City at no cost. Prime power is paid for by AT&T who also fuel and maintain the standby diesel generator at no cost to SBARC.

Grounds for mainetenance

AN APPEAL TO THE USERS OF SBARC SYSTEMS By: Bill Talanian, <w1uuq(a)sbarc.org> SBARC Telecommunications Services maintains five major locations consisting of various repeaters, digital and remote systems. The most popular system is the 146.79 repeater at our Mesa site. It is also the only location requiring routine grounds maintenance to keep the vegetation from totally taking over. Over the years we have managed to get by with the technical support people keeping the grass cut back. It is time to rethink and formalize a more organized plan to maintain the 1500 sq ft zone at the site. A three to four person team would be ideal on a quarterly basis in performing the yard maintenance. Ensuring the vegetation is cut back will minimize the fire danger to the public safety systems and is our responsibility. Ideally a small team organized independently to oversee the site would be best as opposed to chasing around looking for people to help. If you would like to head up the a team then get in touch so we can put you and your team on the restricted access list. A walk-thru can be arranged. ****************
