SBARC QRP SIG WEEKEND

QRP QRP QRP Hello QRPers. As I write this, we are now just 2 weeks away from our much anticipated QRP weekend. Starting on Friday, July 20, those of us who want a taste of self sufficiency, a chance to get away for a short time and an opportunity to go up to an elevation of over 4,000 feet and operate flea power Amateur Radio stations from batteries are going to have that chance. Figueroa Campground at Figueroa Mountain in the Los Padres National Forest is beckoning you. This will be your opportunity to get out of town and climb up to where the air is rarified and pure, where the smell of pine needles on the tall conifers wafts through the air and into your nostrils and where the smell of bacon sizzling as you climb out of the sack in the morning makes you glad you are alive. In addition to all the fun you are going to have working all those stations from that prime elevation location, think of all those other campers who will be totally blown away by all the antennas that they see. These other campers will be bringing their kids, who, for the first time in their lives, will be exposed to Amateur Radio. You just might be the one who got them hooked into the world's best hobby! You will need to bring with you everything that will sustain you for the weekend -- your shelter (car, van, tent, tarp), sleeping bag or blankets, air mattress, your food, eating utensils, cooking apparatus, first aid, all your radio gear (radio, key, microphone, earphones, coax, coax switch, antenna tuner, antenna, batteries, SWR indicator, misc. coax adapters, laptop, scratch paper, pen/pencil, license -- you know the routine. Oh, and one more thing -- Don't forget to bring your Adventure Pass. We will be in the National Forest and they require the Pass. The cost of the Pass is $5.00 per vehicle per day. So if you came up on Friday afternoon and left on Sunday afternoon, it would technically cost $15.00. However, if we talk to Park Ranger Helen Tarbit there, she might let us stay for just $10.00. If you enjoy these outings, you can purchase an Annual Pass for $30.00. You show your Pass as you enter the campground or when a Park Ranger comes around. You don't have an Adventure Pass? This is where you can pick one up: Big 5 Sporting Goods in the 5 Points Shopping Center Dodge City on Calle Real Far West Gun Supply on State Street Pacific Travel on Anapamu Mountain Air Sports on State Street S.B. Maritime Museum on Harbor Way Certain of the above locations will cut you a deal on the Annual Pass. In other words, you can buy an Annual Pass for $30.00 and a second one for just $5.00. Then two of you can split the $35.00 and have use of the forest for a year for only $17.50 apiece. Such a deal! I suggest you call ahead to see if they make that deal. That will eliminate the concern over our weekend. In case you have forgotten how to get to Figueroa Mountain, take Highway 154 (San Marcos Pass) to the little town of Los Olivos. Take the road to Figueroa Mountain from there. Remember, the campground takes no reservations -- it is on a First Come, First Served basis. I would suggest that you leave as early as possible on Friday and stake out the best site for us. Keep in mind, some of us will be putting up dipoles, some will be guying up verticals -- in other words, we will need space. I hope I have whet your appetite for this great time. We have been talking about it on the QRP Net and now the time has finally come. What a wonderful experience it will be -- in the outdoors in the summertime playing radio. WOW! NIST time survey

Please take the time to go the NIST web site and take the survey. They want to know if you are using the services they provide on WWV and WWVH. I believe they are contemplating some changes (downsizing, etc.). If you value these sources of frequency standards, time and accuracy, it behooves you to go to their web site at nist.gov and click on the time and frequency services survey. I have an old 60W 150MH GE base station (Transistor receiver and Transmitter driver and tube PA) Desktop model that I would like to give to anyone who wants it. I'm cleaning out my garage and the radio is one of the things I have to get rid of. Upcoming ARDF Meet on June 16

I will be attending, so if anyone wants to go down with me, just let me know. After the event, I usually have dinner with Joe and April and it is a great opportunity to find out what is happening in the world of ARDF!!! ************************** Schabarum Regional Park near Rowland Heights will be the site of southern California's next international-style on-foot 2-meter foxhunt on Saturday, June 16. This is an official training session for the ARDF Team Southern California, but it is free and open to everyone who wants to see and try the sport. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment is not required. At least six members of the team are expected to attend, coming from Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties. Come out and meet some of the radio-athletes who will represent us at the First USA National ARDF Championships in Albuquerque later this summer. Since it's primarily for team training , the main course will be more difficult than previous ARDF sessions in this and other southern California venues. Standard international rules will be more closely followed. Total course lengths will be 5 to 10 kilometers, depending on age/gender division, with significant elevation changes. There will be a "beginner" course that's much shorter, with fewer hills. An optional 80-meter transmitter (3542 KHz) will also be on the air for you to try. Trails are primitive in some areas of the park, so wear sturdy shoes. All ages are welcome, but young children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Bring any 2-meter RDF "sniffing" gear you have. If you don't have any, just bring your HT or scanner. A limited number of RDF sets will be available for loan. Also be sure to bring anything you'll need while going after those radio foxes, such as munchies, bottled water and sunscreen. Topographic course maps will be available, so bring your own compass, protractor and pencil. Make sure all batteries are fresh. Practice 2-meter transmitters will go on the air around 11:30 AM, and the main 5-fox hunt will begin at 12:30 PM. There are picnic tables and BBQ grills nearby, so you can bring your lunch or cook up something if you wish. The park entrance is on the south side of Colima Road, just east of Azusa Avenue in Hacienda Heights. (Thomas Guide Pg678-G4) Entry fee for the park is $3 per vehicle, so carpooling would be a good idea. Upon passing through the entry gate, drive straight ahead (don't turn right) and continue to the end of the road (about 0.7 mile). Park in the last parking lot near the restrooms. The action will be just up the hill to your left. Look for the orange and white Orienteering flags and signs. Call K0OV on 146.970 simplex if you have trouble finding the site. Australian Radio Classes

This is just for the sake of comparison between what is required in the US and what is required in Australia. Take a look at the last paragraph!!! ***************************************** 2001 Amateur Radio NOVICE Classes* --- Starting Tuesday 5rd June 2001 --- by the North East Radio Group, Inc. Melbourne, Australia Where: Mactier Golf Club rooms at the Simpson Army Barracks, Macleod, (Melway ref 20-F7), Victoria, Australia When: Tuesday nights for 14 weeks, 7.30~10pm, with exams to be held in September. Coverage: Introductory radio theory, amateur regulations, (and optional Morse Code practice), all to Novice level. Fees: There is a fee for the classes which includes NERG membership and the chance to repeat classes at a later date if required at no extra cost. (Concessions are available). The authorised examination body, the Wireless Institute of Australia, charges separate exam fees of around $25 each for regulations and theory, and $20 for Morse code. There is no age restriction for obtaining an amateur license in Australia. Memorial Day Ride

Ray Ford and I took a quick mountain ride today across West Camino Cielo, down Refugio Canyon to El Cap. It was great to see OBB's repeater antenna positioned on the lower end of the big blue and white antenna. This was a shakedown trip to test some BOB trailers and a new idea called "bikepacking" IMO this is a way to go and has some advantages over panniers. Check out the photos of today's journey which includes one of the great downhill rides, elevation drop of 4000 feet in 14 miles, 27 miles.
