The only reason I can post this update is because we have solar panels and battery backup. The system wasn’t designed for what may be two or more weeks without power, but by conserving energy, we’re able to live comfortably and help our neighbors. We also recently switched to a satellite-based internet service (a new option from HughesNet), which is why we still have internet access. Mobile phone systems in the region are completely down, and almost no one has service—including local TV reporters. A large portion of the population here is without internet, according to reports. Even the 911 system is largely inaccessible. Residents are being urged to text 911 in emergencies, but in many areas, even that’s not possible. I’ve heard it all my life: when all else fails, ham radio still works. And let me tell you, it’s true. Throughout the storm, our normally quiet repeater systems were buzzing with activity. The traffic became very organized, with hourly nets helping pass messages to family and friends, sharing detailed on-the-ground reports, and identifying areas where help was needed. Even though our emergency services are overwhelmed, we’re able to connect with them via amateur radio networks like ARES. Right now, being a ham feels like a superpower. Doc's celebration of life will be at Vista Del Monte Retirement Community (3775 Modoc Road in Santa Barbara) on October 19, 2024 from 2:00PM - 4:00PM. Parking is limited but additional parking will be available in the adjacent church parking lot (3721 Modoc Road). Catering will be provided for a light late lunch (hoping for Dave's Dogs [hotdogs] since one of Doc's favorites). The first hour will be the informal service with five family speakers. The second hour will be food and music. The service will be indoors in the MAIN LOUNGE. The party will be indoors/outdoors at the PARKVIEW LOUNGE. Doc Denis Franklin

How blessed all of us, in the ham community, have been knowing W6EW (Dr Denis Franklin) His kindness and generosity has been bar- none. He was always willing to help out and “get involved”. He helped out by being a “Cuckoo Net Host”, when needed, and had a good time being net control. His stories never got old. The knowledge he had about a lot of things kept us wanting more stories. There were the stories when he was a flight physician or when he was in the service when Elvis was drafted. How “easy” Elvis had it, and how he lived off somewhere other than the barracks. That was one of my favorite stories. He started to really enjoys being at Vista Del Monte,being a “people person”, many of the residents liked Denis and have nothing but kind words for him. His love for music and playing the piano was something he looked forward to. He will be missed by us, in the ham community, we will miss him on Saturday mornings at the Red Cross. It was great to see him there. He ventured out to “Taco Tuesdays” and other special events. Go in peace Doc, we will always remember how kind you were and what a treasure we had. Religion was something we never talked about but I am sure the way he lived was a “golden rule”. Janet, Lisa, Scott and Bruce I’m sure you have stories you will treasure always also. One of our members, Denis "Doc" Franklin, became a silent key at approximately 22:00 on Sunday September 22, 2024 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital ICU. Doc would have been 90 years old next month. Doc is survived by his four children: Janet Franklin (Scientist), Scott "Scooter" Franklin (Helicoper Pilot), Lisa Franklin Johnson (Lawyer), and Bruce Franklin (Film Producer). A gathering will be held on October 19, 2024 in honor of Doc. The place (most likely Vista Del Monte Retirement Community where Doc was last living) and time will be announced at a later date, but you may wish to keep the date open if you would like to celebrate Doc's life with other SBARC members, Doc's musician minstel community, and Doc's family. Repeater Updates: 446.400 Moved to La Cumbre Peak West

It was a foggy, cool day at La Cumbre Peak when SBARC members Levi, K6LCM; Wayne, AF6GX; and Michael, K6RQV, headed up to the site to install the club’s new BridgeCom FM repeater on 446.400 MHz. Despite the low visibility and brisk weather, the team successfully completed the installation, bringing a significant upgrade to the repeater system. The new repeater offers excellent coverage and is now linked to the club’s wider system, ensuring even greater range for members and improving communications across the region. This installation is part of SBARC’s ongoing efforts to enhance the reliability and reach of its network for amateur radio operators in Santa Barbara and beyond. Bring a radio to the SBARC picnic

This Sunday is the SBARC picnic. I am going to bring an HF radio and would love to have some other folks bring and set one up too. Good excuse to see if you can work HF portable. Dave Ai6vx
