ARDF near Santa Barbara this Saturday

Learn hidden transmitter hunting and build equipment for it at Lake Los Carneros near Santa Barbara this coming Saturday, November 22. Bring the kids and grandkids, then go out on the course with them! This event is being hosted by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. Before the hunt, Marvin will host a session of antenna and attenuator building for those who have a two-meter hand-held radio or scanner, but don't have any equipment for radio direction finding with it. If you register with Marvin ahead of time, he will have kits for measuring-tape yagis and active attenuators. There will also be tools and soldering stations. If you're not an electronic technician, don't worry because there will be experts to help you. We want you to succeed! Send e-mail to Marvin (marvin(a)west.net) to pre-register and get more information about equipment. If you already have equipment and just want to hunt, you don't need to pre-register. The building session starts a 9 AM. Please be prompt. The main 5-fox hunt begins about 10:30 AM. Hunters may start any time until 11:30 AM. Courses close at 2 PM. Bring any 2-meter RDF "sniffing" gear you have. If you don't have any, just bring your handi-talkie or scanner and come early for the building session. If you can't do that, come anyway, because a limited number of RDF sets will be available for loan. Also be sure to bring anything you'll need while going after those radio foxes, such as munchies, bottled water and sunscreen. Bring your own compass, protractor and pencil if you plan to use them for map marking. Make sure that all batteries are fresh. Directions to Lake Los Carneros: From US 101 about 8 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north about 1/4 mile and turn right into the Stow House parking lot. There should be plenty of free parking. The building session and hunt start will be in the picnic area, just east of the railroad depot. A map to the Los Carneros site is at www.homingin.com. In case of rainy or very wet conditions, the event might be postponed. Check the Homing In site before you set out to make sure that the event is a "go." November Meeting = SIG Night and Elections

Friday November 21 is an especially important meeting that I would urge all SBARC members to attend First it is our annual SIG Night where each Special Interest Group will have a representative present to answer questions and whet your appetite for this and that form of activity, from ARES to DX to ARDF and even ATV and satellites something for every interest in Ham radio! Reminder: Hamfest Planning Meeting tonight

Hi everyone!!! Just a reminder that we will have a Hamfest Planning Meeting tonight at Rusty's on Upper State Street next to Burger King. We will start at 6:30 PM, and should be finished by 8:00 PM. This will probably be the last meeting of this type for a while. I would have loved to have more people attending and involved in the process, but that isn't happening. And if something doesn't work, change it :). Putting on a great event of any type requires dedicated people, and getting those people is my main goal at this point. I'll have a summary tonight of what has been discussed in past meetings and discussions as well as what I see the basic format for the Hamfest. What we now need are people willing and able to take charge of a particular aspect of Hamfest, and run with it to make it happen. This will be a fairly small team of people, and if you would like to be a part of that team, you NEED to be there tonight. If you aren't subscribed to the SBARC Listserver, I posted a link earlier to a new service offered by Google called Google Moderator. The link below to a question I started allows people to post questions and opinions about What Makes a GREAT Hamfest. It is not a discussion group, but a place where questions and opionions can be entered. Additionally, each question/opinion can be graded so that the top ranked questions/opinions will move to the top of the list. What Makes a GREAT Hamfest

Google has a new feature that allows questions to be asked and opinions to be asked. This is NOT a discussion group but a place where thoughts can be stated. You need to have a Google account to ask questions or place opinions. My thoughts have been along the lines of how to make our next Hamfest something that people will WANT to attend and feel badly if they missed it. New Elmer Net Thrusdays at 7:30 PM

Hi folks: Please see the note from N6DRF below: _____ From: Don Flint [mailto:don@n6drf.com] Sent: Sunday, November 09, 2008 4:51 PM To: n6kth(a)n6kth.com Hello everyone, As most of you know, there is a net every weekday morning called the Reg Dawe Memorial Cuckoo net in which we all meet and rag chew, talk about weather conditions and anything else that may come up. This net is not exclusive and everyone is welcomed. As an extension to that, Ken Owen (N6KTH) and Dave Milton (K6HWN) have created the Reg Dawe Amateur Radio Association. The mission statement for the association is that we are a group of hams dedicated to serving as "elmers" to the amateur radio community, by guiding, assisting and supporting fellow hams, following the example set by Reg Dawe W6HUT (sk). A website has been established after securing Reg's call sign and can be found at http://www.w6hut.net if you care to peruse it. As time went on, I felt that there was a little bit of a void, not only in the morning net, but with the SBARC net schedule generally. In thinking of ways to fill this void, it seemed like it might be a good idea to have an informal net, more of a "gathering", on Thursday evenings that would be geared towards the new ham licensee that may have a lot of "newbie" questions, questions about repeaters, how to use their radio, what IRLP does, where exactly La Vagia hill is, and so on. I've discussed this with KTH, HWN, and HUT(w7-type), and everyone has provided positive feedback. After getting the blessings of our club president, I am putting out this email to let you know that beginning next Thursday evening, November 13, 2008, at 7:30 P.M. we will try and kick off this net and see how it goes. This will not be a "formal" net, but really just a time and place that people can come, ask any question they want without feeling mic-shy, do radio tests, learn radio etiquette and things like that. It may only be a thing where some of us simply monitor just-in-case, or it may morph into another popular net where we all just get together, like the A.M. net, but no one is "in charge" and there won't be lengthy "interrogations". In structuring this net, it seems to me that the knowledge and experience of people in the Santa Barbara ham community is vast and very diverse. Therefore, in my mind, for this to be successful and beneficial, it would be great to have everyone participate to the extent that their schedules permit to help spread the knowledge and experience we all have to bring new people into amateur radio and SBARC. Again, this will not be a formal net where someone is in charge and controls the net. I'm shooting for a forum where everyone and every question or topic is welcomed. I think it would add to the success of this "elmer" net to create awareness at key events like the licensing classes offered by Bob Pizzi (AC6PZ), as well as at the exit to the VE sessions for the new hams. Additionally, I've been told we even have a number of HT's available to loan out at the club station in order to help get folks on the air and involved. In addition to the personal satisfaction of helping new hams get started, it may also benefit the club by way of member recruitment and therefore public service involvement. I hope to hear everyone on TZ Thursday! If we get just one person involved, it will be a success.

Reminder: Hamfest Dinner

Hi everyone, Just a reminder that our 2009 Hamfest meeting will be tomorrow (Monday) evening at 6:30PM at Rusty's Pizza on upper State St. We have Rob Griffin's support (the SB Section Manager) and it is now a matter of contacting the section clubs. A couple of new ideas came up last week that I think are excellent. One of them is to have a blog describing the status of Hamfest as we start to build. Another one that I haven't heard of anyone doing is to have a Forum where registered sellers can post "ads" of what they will be bringing. Along that line, we could have an area where people who will be attending can post their wants. A suggestion that came from Harold Scot, WA6EAT, at the SARC meeting was to see if we can set a record with the most people taking a VE session, the Guiness Book of Records type of thing. We are still coming up with ideas, but it is close to the time where the leaders need to step up to the plate to make it happen. We want this to be an event that people WANT to attend, and it will take quite a bit of work and dedication to make that happen. We will have a lot of public exposure by being at the Earl Warren Fairgrounds, and if we all work together, I can see every club in the section participating being a part of a hugh membership expansion! Hamfest Planning Meeting Tonight

Hi everyone, Just a reminder that we will be having a Hamfest planning meeting tonight at Rusty's Pizza on upper State Street next to Burger King. We will start at 6:30PM and plan on ending by 8:30PM. As I said earlier, these are my goals: * Build a Hamfest team that will continue into the future. * Make the content of our Hamfest spectacular so people WANT to attend as opposed to attending only because of tradition. * Provide a means to follow up on people interested and get them involved in ham radio. I would also like to find someone interested in online market research that can find the interest level in what we come up with. This will be a great learning experience for anyone interested in Internet Market Research!!! A couple of us have some experience with marketing, both online and offline, so you won't be left out in the cold as to how to do the research. The online research will mainly involve using Google and the many tools they provide. Please be thinking of what activities/demonstrations/speakers will attract people. Since we will have the Earl Warren Showgrounds sign to help with exposure, we need to also consider people not in ham radio but would be interested in finding out more.
