ATV REPEATER - SPRING CLEANING TOUR AND WORK SESSION TODAY AT 1PM AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT - If you want to do something a little different today, consider a trip up Gibraltar Road this afternoon to check out the ATV site and help with a few construction and cleanup projects. We need your help and it might even be fun. TRANSPORTATION - If you need a ride, call me ASAP at 637-0985. If you're driving on your own, contact me on the 146.19/79 repeater between 12:45pm and 1:00pm to coordinate access to the site. SHOWTIME - We'll be hooking up a trailer at Dave K9KBX's house at 1pm and then we'll drive to the repeater site, arriving around 1:30pm. OBJECTIVES - Build, learn and enjoy. Depending on the size of the crew, we'll try to accomplish these tasks. . Raise the 5.8 GHz receive antenna, peak it up and install the preamp . Install a 5.x GHZ WiFi Access Point pointing downtown . Install a 2.4 GHz WiFi Client Bridge pointing downtown . Install a Local Area Network Switch and Wireless Router . Get all of the computers talking to each other on the LAN/WLAN . Install an "on-the-air" Waveform Monitor so we can all check and adjust our ATV signals . Test and install our Tower Cameras . Load the Outdoor Rack onto the trailer and take it to Rod WB9KMO's house . General Cleanup of the building and surrounding area If you want to learn about these things or just want to pitch in and help, check in on 19/79 at 1pm. Field Day and Balloon Launch - Make Them Happen!

Hello SBARC Members and Friends, Two major events are coming up and we would like you to help MAKE THEM HAPPEN! These are great opportunities to support the club, participate with friends, have fun and learn something new. FIELD DAY will be at Camino Real Marketplace on June 24, 25 and 26. BALLOON LAUNCH is planned for July 2, probably from the beach near Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara. FIELD DAY OPERATORS - Field Day operators should contact Tom Saunders as tsaund(a)cox.net. Early birds will get the best operating times. If you're new, jump in anyway because this is a great opportunity and you can learn from the veterans. Even if you only operate a short time, this will be a memorable experience. FIELD DAY PUBLIC AWARENESS - Field Day offers a chance for us to make a big public splash for amateur radio. We need you to come and talk to the public about, and maybe demonstrate, what you enjoy about amateur radio. Bring a friend. I would hope that all of us would spend at least some time at the booth promoting SBARC and amateur radio. We need to secure people for specific times, so please contact me, Rod Fritz at wb9kmo(a)sbarc.org . BALLOON PROJECT - A balloon launch is being sponsored by the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum with lots of support from SBARC. This is a rare opportunity to participate in a world class event to touch the edge of space with amateur radio and other science experiments. We need task leaders and helpers in lots of areas, some very technical and some, not so much. All are important. We are already working on this and need help from now until we recover the payload after the launch. Join us starting at 8:00 AM, but please note: we will be in the main dining area, NOT the back room. Get their early to get a good seat! A Few Keith Coulter Estate Items

Hey: Probably not very many of you have heard the name of, let alone met, Keith Coulter. He wasn't a ham but he loved old antique radios and vacuum tubes....in essence (I believe) he collected for the sake of collecting. His interests were many: o Vacuum tubes, the older the better, probably 2,500 tubes or more. o Spark Plugs.....from 1904 onward. o Bullets.....from Civil War onward. o Antique guns, from WW-II back to somewhere in the 1800's. o Bullet molds.....Individual molds for black powder guns. o Atwater Kent type radios, including two Model 10's, that go for about $1,400 each. o Test Equipment in "Suitcases"..i.e., typically wooden boxes with a handle for carrying. o 15-20 Tube Testers, I will list them as I am able to sort them out of the piles. o Probably 50-75 Miscellaneous really old meters, test sets, etc. o About 15-20 Triplett/Simpson VOM's The list is virtually endless.........Below are some of the items that are ready to sell, and they will go the Chino Hills Swapmeet Saturday (5/21/11)......So speak up if you are interested in anything. SBARC Old Timers Night Friday, May 20, 2011 by Darryl Widman, KF6DI 500-watt Spark-gap transmitter/receiver from the S.S. Carolina Now, celebrating its 91st year of existence, the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club invites you to attend its annual Old Timers Night on Friday, May 20, at our usual meeting place -- the Goleta Union School District, 401 N. Fairview Ave, right across the street from the Goleta Library. The meeting begins at 7:30 pm but come earlier and have a good look around and see what our members have dug up from their cellars, their dungeons, their dingy abodes where they have been storing their precious treasures for all these past umpteen years. You do know that hams never throw anything away! Let this be an invitation to you to bring along your oldest radio-related objects and set them out on the tables and let us enjoy what you have been hanging on to for all these many years. Let this get-together be the reason you have been keeping them -- so you could eventually show them off and get all that attention you have been seeking! See how many oohs and aahs you can collect. What would be even better would be if you would put down on paper what these wonderful things are, how they were used, if you used them, where they came from and all that sort of thing. Bring radios, transmitters, receivers, transceivers, old photographs, bathtub capacitors for goodness sake. There is virtually no limit to how many things you can bring. Just remember to take them home with you at the end of the evening. Someone might even want to relieve you of something you brought for, let's say, a handsome figure! But knowing the frugality of us hams, don't expect to retire just yet. Traditionally, Old Timers Night gives us the opportunity to see and meet some of the oldest hams still around and ask them what it was like back in the 'Good Old Days.' We ask those present to stand and introduce themselves, give their callsigns, when they got their first license and what they like best about Amateur Radio. Guaranteed you will hear some fascinating stories. Perhaps you have one of your own. We would like to hear all about it. The longest licensed ham will, indeed, be recognized. The year is a third gone, already. You still have time to renew your membership and participate in all that SBARC will be doing this year. Don't be left out. Much fun to come! Our membership chairman, Harry, K6PDQ, will be delighted to sign you up and shake your hand at our club meeting. The club will bring coffee and soda and a scrumptious carrot cake for our birthday.
