Some of you may have already received this, so if this is a duplicate message, I apologize. Below is a summary of the a high altitude balloon project with amateur radio technology that I worked on with my students at Anacapa School this year with support from SBARC members. Many thanks to Rod, WB9KMO and Cyril, AF6GW and Alex, KJ6FAF for their help getting live Amateur TV working on this probe and for outfitting the SBATV-mobile with a grid dish for a live video downlink. May 7, 2012 — Santa Barbara, Calif. Members of the Anacapa Near Space Exploration Club (ANSEC) at Anacapa School are celebrating the weekend success of their second near space probe Anacapa Amateur High-Altitude Balloon 2 (AAHAB-2). The high school team launched two payload capsules tethered to a weather balloon on Saturday, May 5 at 6:52 a.m. from a site off Highway 166, northwest of New Cuyama, Calif. The sunrise launch afforded the team some tremendous photo opportunities. This images shows the balloon's view climbing through 26,444 feet. Equipped with GPS, atmospheric sensors, high-definition video and still cameras, a television transmitter and a Geiger counter, AAHAB-2 downlinked live data, video and images to the crew during its ascent. As the balloon climbed through the thinning air, the decreasing atmospheric pressure caused it to expand nearly ten times in diameter. Upon reaching its apex above California’s Central Valley, the balloon burst, sending the payload back to the surface under the canopy of a small parachute. By reaching an altitude of 111,814 feet, AAHAB-2 shattered the record of the group’s own AAHAB-1 flight by more than 20,000 feet. AAHAB-2 was designed and built entirely by Anacapa students Grayson Baggiolini, Julio Bernal, Alex Carlson, Christian Eckert and Genevieve Hatfield under the supervision of their faculty advisor Levi Maaia. The team has been working on the project since September 2011. Carlson, an 18-year-old senior at Anacapa, and Hatfield, a 15-year-old sophomore, earned their amateur radio licenses, allowing the group to use specialized higher-power wireless equipment to transmit live video images and data from the capsule to the ground crew throughout the flight. With the support of members of the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club, the Anacapa crew watched the live television downlink as the balloon climbed through the freezing, harsh conditions of the upper atmosphere into the dark, eerily-silent skies of near space. AAHAB-2 was recovered from a ranch near Bakersfield four and a half hours after launch. “I am confident in saying that AAHAB-2 was a success,” said Carlson, the mission’s flight director. “There are some things we would do differently next time around, but overall we accomplished more than I ever expected.” The craft’s three-hour and 18-minute flight was about one hour longer than the team anticipated, causing some moments of anxiety as they watched position reports creep eastward toward the Sierra Nevada. “Our initial projections showed that it would touch down near Taft,” said Eckert, a 16-year-old junior. “We never expected it to climb so high and stay there for so long!” Fortunately for the crew, the descending capsules landed just short of the ridgeline, touching down in ranchland at the base of the foothills south of Bakersfield. The students expect to thoroughly document the flight and analyze the collected data over the coming weeks. SBARC team solves worldwide aprs problem

SBARC Tech's Help Solve Global APRS Flaw It all began when Levi Maaia, K6LCM, was engaged with yet another of his stratosphere weather balloon experiments at the Anacapa School. An experimental sensor array data feeding a Byonics TNC to the SBARC APRS 144.39 system turned into unexpected results. Levi soon discovered a reporting flaw on the aprs.fi global reporting system. He noticed his WX data wasn't showing up on aprs.fi, but it was showing up on findu.com. The issue quickly got the attention of Shaw Takeuchi, AE6BL, of SBARC, Heikki Hannikainen (Hessu) in Finland who is the author of aprs.fi as well as Pete Loveall, AE5PL, author of javaparssrvr. Lead troubleshooter was Lynn W Deffenbaugh (Mr), KJ4ERJ, author of APRSISCE for Windows Mobile and Win32 who was assigned to the case. It was discovered that the global complex network of data servers in multiple layers had two servers which were misconfigured causing the system to drop WX data coming from APRS. Worldwide flash emails were going back and forth this week to help nail down the heretofore undiscovered flaw in the system. With Levi discovering the problem and Shaw defending the SBARC configuration it focused the the worldwide experts on solving the server problem. There is much more detail to this story which hopefully can be documented for a good Key-Klix article. You guy's did a GREAT JOB of global team work in communicating the data back to the authors in solving their undiscovered problem.

US ARDF Championship Registration

Registrations are now being accepted for USA's annual championships of on-foot transmitter hunting, which will take place during the week and weekend after Memorial Day. The site will be the forests near Mt. Laguna Village, about 45 miles east of San Diego. Activities will get under way on Wednesday and Thursday, May 30 - 31, when an optional two-day "training camp" will take place. The official championships opening will take place on Friday, June 1 with practice and equipment testing sessions. The two-meter contest will take place on Saturday, June 2, after which all will gather for a banquet in the evening. Sunday's schedule includes the 80-meter contest and an awards ceremony, timed to end in mid-afternoon to accommodate those who must hurry home. Even if you have never competed in a formal ARDF event before, you are welcome at the USA and IARU Region 2 Championships. The courses will be open to all, beginner and expert alike, with or without a ham radio license. USA's best are expected to attend and they are always helpful to newcomers. The training camp is an outstanding opportunity and highly recommended for first-timers. National ARDF Championships are for individuals only. No teaming or assistance on the course is permitted. Participants are divided into six age categories for males and five age categories for females in accordance with standard IARU rules. Medals for first, second and third places will be awarded in each category on each band. The official event Web page at www.homingin.com has the registration form. It is important for participants to register right away. The organizers need an accurate head count and assurances that there will be sufficient attendees. It's also important to make reservations now if you want to stay at the event headquarters, which is Laguna Mountain Lodge. (Nearby camping is also available.) Transportation and lodging information is on the event Web page, as well as the daily schedule, competition rules, transmitter and map information. For questions and regular updates, you can subscribe to a group mailing list for participants and others interested in these championships.
