Hams Needed for SB Century Bike Ride

I am looking for a handful of Hams for the upcoming event called the Santa Barbara Century Bike Ride. This Event is on Saturday, October 20th. It is actually two events in one. The one part is the Century 100 mile bike ride that goes up Gibraltar Road and back and the second is a 100 Metric Kilometers. This goes from Santa Barbara down to Carpinteria and back up to Goleta Beach. Hello SBARC Members and Friends, This is a shameless plea to get you to help in a public service event and have fun doing it. We need a few hams to help kids transmit audio and slow-scan TV pictures between two downtown locations on Sat Oct 6 and Sun Oct 7 from 11am to 5pm. If you can work any portion of either day, you're hired. Please let me know if you want to participate. It helps to know we have this covered in advance, so please volunteer as soon as you can. The Art Museum's press release (below) describes the event. 73, Rod Fritz WB9KMO SBARC Outreach Chair ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - The Funk Field Station: Creating a Culture Collector On Oct 6th and 7th artist Patrick Melroy, working with young artists from Santa Barbara's Museum of Art Teens 4 Teens High school Internship Program, in collaboration with the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission will transform a commonplace shipping container into a Culture Collector for the Funk Zone. Inspired by the SBMA exhibition, "Scene on the Street" in which photographer, Doug Busch uses his large format camera to elevate the everyday, Melroy and his cadre of students will capture and communicate community stories and images from visitors and residents of the Funk Zone. Taking on the persona of research station the artists, (just added) using the expertise of the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club's HAM operators will transmit culture bites back to mission control, located at the museum. Intrepid tourists and locals alike are encouraged to set out in search of the Funk Field Station signal. It's scavenger hunt meets science; all artfully imagined and ready for shipping October 6th. The container will be staffed from 11pm to 5pm on Saturday, and from 11 to 5 pm on Sunday. Watch face book and twitter for more ways to connect.

Anacapa to Host Live Q&A with the International Space Station Student space exploration group works with S.B. Amateur Radio Club to connect to astronauts October 4, 2012 --- Santa Barbara, Calif. Students and faculty of Anacapa School are preparing for a rare event that will allow them to make contact with an astronaut currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS) via amateur radio as part of the independent school’s annual Synthesis Unit. Anacapa has the opportunity to participate in the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program, a cooperative venture between NASA and other international space agencies that coordinates scheduled radio contacts between astronauts aboard the ISS and schools. The 10-minute live forum will bounce between Anacapa students and astronauts as the space station’s orbit passes over Southern California. NASA is expected to confirm a final date for Anacapa School’s ISS contact sometime in the 2013 Spring Semester. Each year, Anacapa students participate in the school’s Synthesis Unit, Anacapa’s premier tool for developing critical thinking skills. Each Unit provides students with unique opportunities to explore a specific topic in depth with expert speakers, field trips and hands-on experiences. This year, teachers across varying content areas have incorporated lessons regarding space, astronomy, NASA, and the ISS into their subject curriculum in preparation for a special guest presenter who will join in from 250 miles above Earth! “I think I am as excited as the students are about this opportunity,” said Gordon Sichi, Anacapa’s founding headmaster. “It was such an honor to work with NASA for this privilege, and we are fortunate to have the help of the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club to assist with the technical details.” Students in the Anacapa Near Space Exploration Club (ANSEC) are laying the groundwork for the contact and will coordinate the actual event. As part of their preparations, ANSEC members are studying for the amateur radio license test which will allow them to use specially allocated radio frequencies during the exchange. ARISS and Teaching From Space, a NASA education office, encourage participating schools to lay such groundwork as part of their goal to instill interest in science, technology, engineering and math subjects and careers among students. The ARISS radio contact is one in a series of educational activities in the U.S. and abroad to improve teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Teaching From Space promotes a variety of learning opportunities and builds partnerships with the education community using the unique environment of human spaceflight. Anacapa School is an independent, co-educational, WASC-accredited, college preparatory day school for students in grades 7-12. Founded in 1981 by headmaster Gordon Sichi, Anacapa enjoys the best student-teacher ratio of any school, public or private, in Santa Barbara at its historic campus located in the heart of the Santa Barbara civic center.
