Cognitive dissonance re BPL

A bit of FUD (Fear, uncertainty and doubt) about VoIP, or perhaps an effort to tout BPL leads to this interesting conclusion from C-Net. What's wrong with this picture? "Also, there's still no way to guarantee VoIP phones will work when power is lost, and not all VoIP providers offer 911 service." During a power outage, a VoIP phone is only as good as any battery backups on hand, because delivering power through the broadband connection isn't possible on a wide commercial basis. An emerging alternative broadband-delivery technique, broadband over power line, will solve this problem, but wide deployment is years away." Beginner's T-Hunt Saturday

Hi everyone, Just a reminder that tomorrow (Saturday) will be the Beginner's T-Hunt. We meet at 9:00 AM out at the Stow House parking lot off of Los Carnaros Road. Five transmitters will be placed around the park (about 1/4 square mile in size) and it should take less than 90 minutes to find them all if walking ... less time if running :). There will be a limited amount of DF equipment available for loan, and instruction will be available. See you tomorrow!

Are you referring to the F6A? I have that, and I am using a Maldol MH610 tri-band antenna, and it comes with an SMA connector. It has a shape memory whip, making it easy to take anywhere, without worries of damaging it. Antenna information

Otis Calef (KG6JMT) and I are taking scouts to the Sierras next week. We are taking our Kenwood triband radios. I need a better antenna than the default one that came with the radio. AES has some Diamond antenna Accessories RH and SRH series. Which one would help boost the transmission? Thanks for any input. Paul Cronshaw KF6TRT

2005 Darpa Grand Challenge

>From the News Release dated June 8, 2004: ***************** Grand Challenge 2005: DARPA Schedules Autonomous Robotic Ground Vehicles Event Essential Informational Meeting Set for August 14 in Anaheim, Calif. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense announced that it will hold a second Grand Challenge for Autonomous Robotic Ground Vehicles on October 8, 2005. Grand Challenge 2005 is designed to accelerate research and development in autonomous ground vehicle technology that will help save lives on the battlefield. Anthony J. Tether, DARPA director, noted, This event is a challenge for American ingenuity. It brings together individuals and organizations from the research and development community, industry, Government, the Armed Services, academia, professional societies, and from the ranks of students, backyard inventors, and automotive enthusiasts. DARPA simultaneously announced that a Participants Conference will be held August 14, 2004, at the Anaheim Marriott, Anaheim, Calif. This informational conference is for participants, interested sponsors, and groups looking for others to help complete their teams. The conference will begin at 2:00 p.m. As with the inaugural event held in March 2004, autonomous vehicles will attempt to navigate a challenging course of varying terrain. The team that completes the Grand Challenge 2005 route within a specified time will receive a cash prize of $2 million, an increase from the $1 million prize offered at last years event. In the first DARPA Grand Challenge, held on a desert route from California to Nevada, 15 teams from a field of 106 applicants progressed to the final event. DARPA anticipates even greater participation in Grand Challenge 2005. The DARPA Grand Challenge web site www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge is the primary resource for data and information about Grand Challenge 2005.
