Amateur radio has lost a great Santa Barbara Section tradition. 73, Don Milbury, W6YN --------------------------------------------------------- Ray Lischka - W9EC writes: -------------------------- Eric Lemmon, WB6FLY, called me last Tuesday night to let me know the SARC board of Directors made the decision to cancel the Fathers Day Swapfest. They cited, dwindling participation, not enough people to put it together, marginal profits, rising cost of renting the grounds, etc. I and lots of other folks do not agree nor understand. That event has been a long-standing, well-attended event on the Central Coast for more years than I care to remember. Please pass this info on, as I am sure there are a lot of folks out there who are not aware. Hi Folks - The below information regarding a Slow Speed Code Practice Net on 40 meters that I sent you about 2 weeks ago was delayed over a week, or so it seemed to me! I used the SBARC-List server and that has happened to me before. I am re-sending it to you in case that you failed to receive it. The information on this Slow-Code net was originally sent out by the ARRL and if you are interested in some good code practice and/or want to improve your code speed this will be a great way to do it! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------- Slow Speed Code Practice Net on 40 meters: The Metro Amateur Radio Club's Slow Speed Code Practice Net meets on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of each month at 7 PM Central (currently 0100 UTC) on 7.138 MHz (plus or minus QRM). Listen for "CQ MAC" and send your call sign at your speed. The net will QRS to match the speed of the slowest op. FISTS members are free to exchange numbers with other participants. New CW Ops and CW Fans

Dear CW Ops ... Phil W6OQX and myself, AD6EZ, are thinking about starting up another "round" of the "POKER" CW net -- (Slow-Pokers). This net was set up originally about 2 years ago to help folks like myself that were needing to improve and increase their code copy and sending. It was a lot of fun and I eventually passed my 20-wpm test for my Extra. Several of you have asked me to restart the Poker net and so Phil and I would be very happy to do so if there was enough interest to make it worthwhile. It benefits no one if no one checks in! And just remember, "No One" already has his 20-wpm! (:8^>) The code speed on the net will be at YOUR speed. So if someone checks in at 12-wpm and you work at 5-wpm then wait your turn and try to copy what you can until you check in -- then the speed will be reduced to 5 or 6 wpm for you and other listening in. I need to hear back from you ASAP by Email if you would like to see the Poker Net start up again. That means, you are willing to check in when you are able to even if it is just to say hello. You would not be just helping yourself but others listening as well. Call me, Denny, at 968-0221 ----------------------------- The next code class begins on May 5th at 7:30pm at the S. B. Beginners T-Hunt - Change in Starting Time for April

Hi all, The Beginner's T-Hunt will be starting two hours earlier this month. Starting time will be at 1:00PM on Saturday, April 14, out at the Stow House Parking lot. Registration will open up at 12:30PM and a practice transmitter will go on the air sometime around noon. There will be five 2M transmitters on a course that will probably be around two miles. There will also be at least one 80M transmitter for those who would like to try hunting on 80M. The rules will be simple: 2 hour time limit, and multiple people can go together as long as they stay together and only use one DF receiver. A hamburger BBQ will follow the event rather than the usual pizza at Rusty's. The cost for the BBQ will be $3.50 per person and will be all-you-can-eat-til-its-gone :)! If you are planning on attending, it would be appreciated if you would let Dave Jacobs (969-9235) K9KBX or myself (687-8881) know. Dave does not currently have Internet access but I can be reached at either marvin(a)rain.org or ke6hts(a)sbarc.org. We are planning on enough food for about 15 - 20 people as of right now. I've also gotten word that at least three other members of the US ARDF team who competed in China will be attending; Bob Frey, and Richard and Jay Thompson. Jay was recently written up on the ARRL Members Only web page at http://www.arrl.org/members-only/extra/features/2001/04/02/1/. We will also have many of the people from So. California attending who will be competing at the US ARDF Championships in Albuquerque July 31 - August 4. This will be a wonderful opportunity to have some fun as well as meet some people who are front runners in helping to publicize ARDF to the US.

To Fellow SBARC members, I have returned from a great family vacation in Mammoth.... skiing was great. :) While there I checked in each night at 9 PM on the BARC - Bishop Amateur Radio Club's Net. One of the regulars also checking in was Fried (last name??) - WA6WZO. I had an opportunity to get to know him and found out he is the SouthWest Regional Director. 80M QRM

I got this from the Heathkit Listserver, and thought it might be worth passing on. ********** Check 3.525 and 3.558 in the FM mode for telephone modem signals. A couple years ago discount stores and cable companies sold these modems which plug into a wall receptacle and transmitted for miles. You plug your phone into one and located a second unit in another room or garage to extend your phone line without wires. These are manufactured in China and are intruding into the ham bands again. If you hear these signals report your log to the ARRL at w1aw(a)info.org Cable companies recalled these units and the 80M band was free again of these signals. Now they are coming back...we could use your help. Make your log report short with a signal strength report and times. If you listen long enough you will be able to hear two way phone conversations. I found my neighbor using one and told her about all the gossip I overheard and she quickly unplugged the units. Dan, ni9y(a)arrl.net
