The (British) Royal Society has made the Proceedings of the Royal Society (Mathematical, Physical & Engineering Sciences) available to read and download for free to celebrate its 350th anniversary. This offer is good through February 28th. After that, the pay wall goes back up.
The papers go back to the time of Isaac Newton. As just one example, if you've struggled with applications of Maxwell's equations, the following paper is where it all started:
