I have used one in my kitchen for over a year.

Hi Jug- those are handy to have in your home. I first started installing those in home around September of last year (generation 1) was a bit problematic and when I saw how handy they were, I put a couple in my kitchen countertop. You can buy them at CES on S. Milpas for about $25/duplex. >. Theo

HI All,
I first saw this type of receptacle at a newly refurbished restaurant several days ago, and today, I bought one at a local hardware store and built up an extension cord using
it.
Feel free to pass this around if you like.

This can be very handy, but in kitchens and bathrooms please make sure that it is "downstream" from a GFI-protected outlet or that the breaker feeding the kitchen is a special GFI type.
Kitchen, bathroom, garage, and outdoor outlets for over a decade are required to have a ground-fault protector. This is a differential mode current transformer that measures the current drawn from the line and compares it to that returning on the neutral wire. If there's a difference (such as a defective appliance or a hair dryer in the tub), the protector shuts off the power.
Dorothy, if there is an outlet in the kitchen near the one with the charge ports that has two buttons labeled TEST and RESET, push the TEST button. The outlet with the buttons and all other outlets in the kitchen should shut off. Pushing the RESET button will restore power.
Or just ask Theo to check it out. :-) The USB combination outlets do NOT have this protection built in so they need to be connected to the mains by passing through an outlet that does if installed in a kitchen.

UNSOLICITED COMMENT ON GFI OUTLETS: IN MANY RESIDENTIAL INSTALLATIONS, THERE WILL BE A GFI OUTLET THAT FEEDS CURRENT TO, AND PROTECTS, AS MANY AS SIX OR SEVEN ADDITIONAL OUTLETS. SO WHEN RUNNING THE TEST JAY DESCRIBES, CHECK OTHER, NEARBY OUTLETS. IF THEY ALSO HAVE NO CURRENT, THEN THEY ARE ALSO PROTECTED BY THE GFI "UPSTREAM" FROM THEM. THIS CAN EXPLAIN WHY AT TIMES SOME OUTLETS MAY HAVE NO POWER AND RESETTING CIRCUIT BREAKERS AT THE MAIN PANEL DOES NOT RESTORE SAME.
