I'm shotgunning with this e-mail, but it's late, I'm tired, and I want to this info out to all you...
The two missing riders were transferred to an ambulance at 12:14am this morning after being evacuated by helicopter from Indian Creek within 200 yards of Lower Buckhorn Camp. They became lost after leaving Camuesa Rd at the broad wash just down from the Indian Creek Trail/ Camuesa Rd intersection. They spent all of Sunday afternoon traveling NE(?) and moved so far away from the Epic route that they were well outside the search pattern. After spending most the day hiding from the heat, they started back toward the Epic route. One rider was hungry and tired, but otherwise fine. The other was severely dehydrated and received intravenous fluids on site. By the time he reached the LZ at White Rock day use area, he was able to walk to the ambulance under his own power. I spoke with them at Cottage hospital around 2am and they are both doing fine. the rider who was severely dehydrated is being kept overnight, they other was released.
A giant hats off to the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team. This was my first, and hopefully last, chance to watch them in action first hand. Their dedication and professionalism is top notch. An amazing group of volunteers!! A big high five also goes to the US Forest Service, Ventura county Search and Rescue, San Luis Obispo county Search and Rescue, and the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club (name?) for their help. Lastly a big bear hug to the IMBA staff for contacting Epic participants and gathering information on the missing riders. Through the day the information gathered by the IMBA staff allowed us to focus the search and develop a better picture of where the riders went wrong. This information was critical in focusing the search, and eventually led to locating the missing riders. Put something extra in the envelope next time renew your IMBA membership to help these folks continue their great work!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you to everyone in the SBMTV organization who busted their tails to make this Epic a raging success. Everyone I talked with raved about the trail, the people, and the organization! Even the Search and Rescue folks were impressed. I wish you all could have reveled in the glory. It was very cool!!
