SBARC Members,
Youāve probably heard by email from every organization you have ever done business with about what they are doing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. From wiping down gas pumps to shifting to takeout food only, there are so many changes, big and small, that challenge our normal routines. Hopefully this note will brighten your day with a new opportunity to socialize and engage in some of your favorite amateur radio activities in a new way!
This week, we conducted the Tuesday night Digital Net on 2m FM and on Google Meet, a free video conferencing service from Google that allows large groups like school classrooms, business boards and working groups to meet online, share video, audio and computer screens.
We will pilot Google Meet once again on the SBARC Thursday nightĀ
March, 19 Technical Mentoring and Elmering Net at 8pm.Ā
Join us on the Clubās 2m FM repeaters 146.79 linked to 145.18,Ā
via Echolink or Allstar AND on Google Meet.
We will be posting a link just before the net to the Google Meet room on the home page at http://www.sbarc.org/. You will need a computer (preferably with a webcam and microphone) or a smartphone to join the meeting.Ā
If you are using a smartphone, you may download the Google Meet app from theĀ AndroidĀ orĀ AppleĀ app stores in preparation for the net. If you plan to use your computer you will need an up-to-date web browser. Ā Google Chrome is preferred but others are supported. You do not need a Google/Gmail account to participate in the videoconference.
Look for a meeting link on Thursday evening on the Club website and join us for an experiment which could lead to more virtual SBARC events including club meetings and more informal gatherings online.Ā
This an opportunity to hone our digital communication skills and blend amateur radio with other resources to keep our club members active and engaged. Social distancing doesnāt have to mean social isolation and with these tools we can see familiar faces, keep our scheduled activities and help each other through these challenging times.
Stay safe and healthy,

Due to the growing concern about the Corona virus spreading, I am
cancelling the ARDF practice originally scheduled for Saturday, April
4th at Lake Los Carnaros.
As of right now, the next ARDF practice and Antenna Building Workshop
will be held on Saturday, May 9th at Hillcrest Park in Fullerton.
You can keep up with upcoming ARDF events by checking in at the
www.Homingin.com website.
Thanks!
Marvin, KE6HTS
Very sorry to hear of Bruce's passing. He was an engineer from which one
could learn and Bruce was always willing to explain the "why". He will be
missed. RIP

I've been asked a number of times to put on an ARDF practice again at
Lake Los Carneros. And so it will happen on Saturday, April 4th. I'll
also be holding an Antenna workshop where an RDF antenna kit with offset
attenuator can be build (cost $65.00.) The only other thing you will
need is a short coax cable with a male BNC on one end, and whatever
connector you need to connect to your HT antenna. And as usual, you will
need to let me know if you want to buy one of the kits. And both
instruction and practice will be covered right after the kit building
session.
The announcement that was sent out to the Southern California ARDF
listserver is quoted below:
Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta will be the site of southern
California's next international-style on-foot foxhunt on Saturday, April
4, 2020. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment are not
required. Experts will be on hand to teach you the basic techniques of
on-foot radio direction-finding (RDF). Bring the kids and grandkids,
then go out on the course with them!
There is no charge for participation. If you have receivers, scanners,
directional antennas, attenuators, or other equipment suitable for
on-foot RDF, be sure to bring it. Make sure all batteries are fresh. A
limited amount of RDF gear will be available for loan to beginners.
Besides some easy two-meter fox transmitters just to help you learn and
test your equipment, there will be a beginner-level international-rules
course on the two-meter band, designed by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. One
or more optional 80-meter fox transmitters may also be on the air. The
site area is slightly less than 140 acres. It is relatively flat,
making it a good site for foxtailers of all skill levels. If you need
some one-on-one help to get started at finding transmitters, just ask.
Full-color orienteering maps will be available.
For those who want to build RDF gear for use with their own two-meter
hand-held radios or scanners, Marvin will have kits for measuring-tape
yagis and active attenuators. Also available is an assembled and tested
assembly that includes the power switch, BNC connector, housing and
battery, ready to install as the tape measure beam is built. There will
be tools and soldering stations for building. If you're not an
electronic technician, don't worry because there will be experts to help
you. We want you to succeed!
If you want to build an antenna/attenuator kit, you mus t register in
advance. Send e-mail to Marvin (marvin(a)west.net) to pre-register and
get more information about equipment. If you already have equipment and
just want to hunt transmitters, you don't need to pre-register.
If it takes place, the building session will start at 9:00 AM. Please
be prompt. Transmitter hunting will begin about 10:00 AM. You may
start out on the courses at any time until 12 noon. Courses close at 2
PM. For those interested, we will meet at a local restaurant after all
the transmitters have been picked up for further discussion of ARDF.
Directions to Lake Los Carneros: From US 101 about 8 miles west of
downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north
about 1/4 mile and turn right into the Stow House parking lot. There
should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white
orienteering flag. The hunt start will probably be in the parking lot.
; If that is too crowded, we will move to a nearby picnic area.
Ham radio talk-in is on the WB6OBB repeater, 147.000(+) PL 131.8.
If heavy rain is in the forecast, check www.homingin.com on April 3 for
possible cancellation.
73,
Joe Moell K0OV
