Very sorry to hear of Bruce's passing. He was an engineer from which one
could learn and Bruce was always willing to explain the "why". He will be
missed. RIP

I've been asked a number of times to put on an ARDF practice again at
Lake Los Carneros. And so it will happen on Saturday, April 4th. I'll
also be holding an Antenna workshop where an RDF antenna kit with offset
attenuator can be build (cost $65.00.) The only other thing you will
need is a short coax cable with a male BNC on one end, and whatever
connector you need to connect to your HT antenna. And as usual, you will
need to let me know if you want to buy one of the kits. And both
instruction and practice will be covered right after the kit building
session.
The announcement that was sent out to the Southern California ARDF
listserver is quoted below:
Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta will be the site of southern
California's next international-style on-foot foxhunt on Saturday, April
4, 2020. A ham radio license and knowledge of radio equipment are not
required. Experts will be on hand to teach you the basic techniques of
on-foot radio direction-finding (RDF). Bring the kids and grandkids,
then go out on the course with them!
There is no charge for participation. If you have receivers, scanners,
directional antennas, attenuators, or other equipment suitable for
on-foot RDF, be sure to bring it. Make sure all batteries are fresh. A
limited amount of RDF gear will be available for loan to beginners.
Besides some easy two-meter fox transmitters just to help you learn and
test your equipment, there will be a beginner-level international-rules
course on the two-meter band, designed by Marvin Johnston KE6HTS. One
or more optional 80-meter fox transmitters may also be on the air. The
site area is slightly less than 140 acres. It is relatively flat,
making it a good site for foxtailers of all skill levels. If you need
some one-on-one help to get started at finding transmitters, just ask.
Full-color orienteering maps will be available.
For those who want to build RDF gear for use with their own two-meter
hand-held radios or scanners, Marvin will have kits for measuring-tape
yagis and active attenuators. Also available is an assembled and tested
assembly that includes the power switch, BNC connector, housing and
battery, ready to install as the tape measure beam is built. There will
be tools and soldering stations for building. If you're not an
electronic technician, don't worry because there will be experts to help
you. We want you to succeed!
If you want to build an antenna/attenuator kit, you mus t register in
advance. Send e-mail to Marvin (marvin(a)west.net) to pre-register and
get more information about equipment. If you already have equipment and
just want to hunt transmitters, you don't need to pre-register.
If it takes place, the building session will start at 9:00 AM. Please
be prompt. Transmitter hunting will begin about 10:00 AM. You may
start out on the courses at any time until 12 noon. Courses close at 2
PM. For those interested, we will meet at a local restaurant after all
the transmitters have been picked up for further discussion of ARDF.
Directions to Lake Los Carneros: From US 101 about 8 miles west of
downtown Santa Barbara, take the Los Carneros Road exit, head north
about 1/4 mile and turn right into the Stow House parking lot. There
should be plenty of free parking. Look for the orange-and-white
orienteering flag. The hunt start will probably be in the parking lot.
; If that is too crowded, we will move to a nearby picnic area.
Ham radio talk-in is on the WB6OBB repeater, 147.000(+) PL 131.8.
If heavy rain is in the forecast, check www.homingin.com on April 3 for
possible cancellation.

Joe Moell K0OV

I wonder if a lawn mower might be useful along with the weedwhackers to make the job even quicker. That’s the combo I use for the weeds in the back forty!

I have several tools to do the work. Do we still have the Husquvarna that the club bought? My schedule may be an issue, but wouldn’t expect to be up there while the ground is wet.Al

Would appreciate a volunteer team of two persons with weed
wacking machines to help clear the La Vigia repeater site. It
would take about 2 hours. If we have more than two people with
machines that is also OK.
Let me know your availability so we can arrange the day and
time.
Thanks

For those of you who don't know, the Yuma Hamfest is the site of the
2020 ARRL SW Division Convention. Complete information is available at:
http://www.yumahamfest.org/
The dates are Friday - Sunday, Feb 14-16 with the Fairgrounds opening on
Thursday, Feb 13 at 2:00PM for setup and camping locations. Camping is
available on the Fairgrounds.
As usual, I'll be there both selling and putting on the Antenna Clinic.
Helping out as usual will be Joe Corones and Joe Laughlin from San
Diego. This year, we'll also be joined by Jerry Boyd, WB8FWK. Jerry is
our new ARRL US ARDF Coordinator who is taking the place of Joe Moell,
K0OV, who retired from that position last year.
Also for anyone attending and wants to join us for our T-hunting dinner
on Friday night, let me know so I can add you to the list and send the
restaurant time and location information.
Thanks!

Thanks for catching that. Those were my typos. Indeed he needs a 572B.
I'm changing the email subject now going forward to avoid further confusion.

Hello SBARC,
As some of you know, I have a connection to a radio club in Havana after
visiting Cuba twice in 2014-15. Hams in Cuba have very limited access to
equipment, supplies and tools but they make do amazingly well with what
they can access. However, some
things cannot be easily improvised, and vacuum tubes are one such
commodity.
My friend Joel CO2YQ is in need of a 527B tube. Here's what he said
(translated):
"I need to find out with the colleagues of the Santa Barbara Club, if
someone has a 572B valve that I am not using and can donate it to me, my
linear is somewhat old a FL2000B and the valves it has are already very low
emission."
If anyone has a 527B that they would be willing to contribute, please let
me know and I will bring it down to Joel's shack. I will be headed to
Havana at the end of the month (Jan 23-30) for a documentary film scout and
I could bring it then.
You can read more about my initial contact with Joel and visiting his
station in QST:
