SBARC Field Day

SBARC Members Field Day 2011 is Saturday, June 25 to Sunday, June 26. We still need operators and other helpers for this event. The Santa Barbara Radio Club has been invited to the Camino Real Marketplace (Costco / Home Depot Mall) for this event. We will be located about 50 yards south of Starbucks. The schedule is: Friday, June 24 1 PM to 5 PM Setup Station(s) 5:30 Pizza Party at Ginos Saturday, June 25 9 AM to 3 PM Public Information and Demonstrations 11 AM Start of Field Day Sunday, June 26 9 AM to 2 PM Public Information and Demonstrations 11 AM End of Field Day 12:30 PM Club BBQ at Girsch Park Note that Field Day runs continuously for a 24 hour period. The Camino Real Marketplace is a great location to show ham radio in operation to the public. The public location will not compromise our Field Day operation. We will continue to operate in 'contest mode', getting as many points and making as many contacts as possible. Camino Real Marketplace is planning on having an Emergency Preparedness / Technology Fair. They want to invite the Red Cross and the City of Goleta for Emergency Preparation education. SBARC will make signs to attract the public and have brochures available. We need club members, family, and friends to help with this event. The positions needed are : Station Setup Assemble Force 12 antenna and test station operation Friday afternoon. Radio Operators Operators needed to work two hour shifts. More than 1 operator per shift is recommended. Contact Loggers Work with operators to log contacts. Public Information Answer questions, hand out information, etc. We need members to help with this. Public Demonstrations Present ham radio topics to public. Examples are Satellite Communication, Amateur Television, Disaster Communications, etc. Demonstration schedule will be posted. Station Takedown Disassemble antenna Sunday at 11:30 AM BBQers Cook meat and serve food for 12:30 BBQ at Girsch Park (500 feet south of Marketplace) You do not need contest experience in order to participate as an HF operator. We can provide training in this area. SBARC equipment shelter

To: SBARC membership From: Bill Talanian Subject: Building Permit signed off Today the brand new SBARC equipment shelter final inspection was signed off by the City Building Department. The shelter is equipped with six 7 ft racks in a environmentally clean temperature controlled space. There is still a lot of work to accomplish with outfitting the equipment into the new rack space but we are on our way. Meanwhile don't fret over frequent outages as we reposition equipment. After installation of the legacy equipment we plan to bring on-line a full up Motorola Quantar repeater sometime in the near future.

SBARC/ATN Tech Question of the Day...

I know Sundays are lazy days, but I bet some of you are up to this challenge. As a practical matter, we have a problem with 990KHz energy getting into out cameras and video inputs at the ATV Repeater site. We can't filter out the interference since it falls right in the middle of the video spectrum. We're quite sure the energy is coming in on the coax, functioning as an excellent antenna, and couples into the equipment. Everything is bypassed properly, but that's not good enough. So here's the problem for you to solve. (We've tried torroids (even tuned to freq) and "hum" filters and they don't work!) 1. We want to loop the RG-59 (not RG-58) coax (look up the specs online) several times to provide 750 ohms of inductive reactance. Assuming we make several loops in the coax that are 4-inches in diameter (side-by-side), how many loops do we need? (Hints: The conductor diameter is the outside diameter of the shield and the spacing between turns is twice the thickness of the insulation on the coax.) When you have that figured out, try this. 2. We want to loop CAT5 cable (look up the specs online) several times to provide 750 ohms of inductive reactance. Assuming we make several loops in the coax that are 4-inches in diameter (side-by-side), how many loops do we need? (Hints: The conductor diameter is different than for coax. The pairs are twisted. The spacing between turns is a little different than for coax.) Have some fun with this and I wish you luck. Answers can be tested at the ATV Repeater site this afternoon. ATV REPEATER - SPRING CLEANING TOUR AND WORK SESSION TODAY AT 1PM AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT - If you want to do something a little different today, consider a trip up Gibraltar Road this afternoon to check out the ATV site and help with a few construction and cleanup projects. We need your help and it might even be fun. TRANSPORTATION - If you need a ride, call me ASAP at 637-0985. If you're driving on your own, contact me on the 146.19/79 repeater between 12:45pm and 1:00pm to coordinate access to the site. SHOWTIME - We'll be hooking up a trailer at Dave K9KBX's house at 1pm and then we'll drive to the repeater site, arriving around 1:30pm. OBJECTIVES - Build, learn and enjoy. Depending on the size of the crew, we'll try to accomplish these tasks. . Raise the 5.8 GHz receive antenna, peak it up and install the preamp . Install a 5.x GHZ WiFi Access Point pointing downtown . Install a 2.4 GHz WiFi Client Bridge pointing downtown . Install a Local Area Network Switch and Wireless Router . Get all of the computers talking to each other on the LAN/WLAN . Install an "on-the-air" Waveform Monitor so we can all check and adjust our ATV signals . Test and install our Tower Cameras . Load the Outdoor Rack onto the trailer and take it to Rod WB9KMO's house . General Cleanup of the building and surrounding area If you want to learn about these things or just want to pitch in and help, check in on 19/79 at 1pm. We may work until 5pm or so, but you can leave anytime you want. Even a little bit of your time will be a big help. Your participation is greatly appreciated.
