How about pulling it out, then drill and tap the 3.5 pipe and put in some setscrews? You could go big with 1/4-20. Two sets of three setscrews a few inches apart would give some pretty fine control of centering and straightness.
Great idea... thought about similar, but I like your idea better. Even better, weld nuts on the outside of the 3.5" pipe for more threads than what could be tapped into ~1/4" of steel! (Just need a welder :-)
